I've just upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 and when I open up a Word
document from the desktop by double clicking, I receive an error message
saying the file his already opened by myself asking if I would like to open
a copy.

If I open the document from inside of Word, then I don't have this problem.

I'm having the same problem with Excel.

Many Thanks in antcipation of help

Hi Peter,

We've been finding in some situations an upgrade of Windows modifies
file associations for Office 97. I suspect it's from manually editing
them at some point.

Anyway I don't know the exact cause but I do know how to fix them. :-)

Go to Start/Run and run the following:

winword /r
excel /regserver
powerpnt /regserver
msaccess /regserver

Note the space before the forward slash.
