    - Word 2003 Help times out If I use Help, and enter a search term, I get a list of topics. If I click on a topic, the result never comes back but tells me there is an internet site problem. This just started to happen and happens on all my Office 2003 programs. It does not happen every time. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. No changes have been made to the system.     - Problem: Phantom Numbers Printing on Hard Copy in Word 2003 Docume I have created a simple two column brochure page with a header and a footer and continuous text with paragraphs numbered automatically. The page looks good when seen in the Word Print View and in Print Preview. When you actually print the page the numbers 14, 15, and 16 appear at the top of the left column randomly between the lines. Taking out the text in that 1" vertical section and replacing it with carrage returns allows the text below to move down and the numbers 14, 15 and 16 to show clearly. The two columns are full. I'll be happy to send you the file so you can see for yourself what I have. How can I get rid of these phantom numbers on the printed document? Why are they there on the hard copy I print on my HP Photosmart 7900 series printer. The do not look good on my finished one page brochure.     - word 2003 won't remember changes I make to the toolbars I make changes to the toolbars (add and/or remove buttons). Close Word. Open Word. Toolbar buttons have not been changed.     - Markup shows in print preview but not on paper. I am using the version of Word that comes with MS works: Word 2002 (10.6764.6735) SP3. Markup appears as expected in print preview, with balloons or with strike out according to what I have selected from Tools - Options - Track changes. But the actual printout on paper is the same regardless of whether I select "Document showing markup" or just "Document": just the current text, with no markup. If I have selected "Force landscape" it even does that correctly (on paper but NOT in print preview), but with the space where the balloons should be completely blank.     - How do I stop Word 2002 from shutting down for no reason? I load a document; I work on it for a short while; I leave the workstation for a few minutes, so screen saver is running (Windows XP-SP2); I move the mouse to restore my screen, and voila! Word closes without explanation. Just closes. Reload Word--no error message, no document retrieval...nothing. Sometimes this happens right after I load the document, too. Word sits with the "hour glass" icon for a minute or so, and then closes every document. It can take me two or three tries to get this to stop. I've searched for updates--my services are up-to-date.     - word 2003 keeps crashing I have a problem where Word 2003 crashes when I open a document, especially if that document is an email attachment, or something I havn't authored, it happens about 95% of the time. It usually freezes and i can't type, or use my mouse on the page, i usually have to right click on the window bar to close the window. It then pops up a window that I have chosen to close the unresponsive program and asks me to send notification to microsoft. I have dloaded all the latest security packs etc., checked the msoft website, visrus checked and run the office recovery software as well and havn't had any luck in fixing the problem.     - Password override I created a document in word where I store all of my passwords for various websites. I created the document on my work computer. I then copy and saved it to my jump drive. I copy and pasted it to my home PC and now I can't open it. It says I don't have permission or User access rights. I know the password.     - Word crashes and computer quits responding I have Word 2002, and it crashes when I'm typing or editing a document...and my computer display freezes...along with the computer itself. I've tried various remedies to fix the problem, such as re-naming the normal.dot file, detect and repair, safe mode (for word) and uninstall-reinstall. Word crashes at various times as I use it...sometimes a few minutes after I start it up, or maybe an hour later. It's hard to predict when it will happen. But, I have noticed that it doesn't freeze when I'm cutting and pasting images onto a document. It doesn't matter if I have internet connection or not, it still freezes. If anyone has any ideas, please drop me a line. Next, I'm going to turn off my computer services one-by-one, and see if I can diagnose the problem that way.     - Spike (ctrl-shift-F3) doesnt work Repeatably using ctrl-f3 in a document, one can pick out sections to copy to another document without having to paste each individually. When ready to paste, just press ctrl-shift-f3 and all the cuts are there. For some reason, when i press ctrl-shift-f3, i get a message: there are too many edits in the document. This operation will be incomplete. Save your work. However, this happens even if I choose one word with control-F3. Nothing is pasted. It seems I need to clear the buffer. If I start word in safe mode by holding CTRL, it works. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks Hal>> ____ Here's one response I got, which didn't work. You can get that message for a number of reasons.     - Sudden problem MS Word, part of Office 2000 on XP Pro SP1. Been using this for a while and have suddenly developed an annoying glitch. If I open a file and have the View set to Print Layout (I sometimes prefer to work like this), I have a page of grey horizontal lines across it on the printable area of the page (this is on the screen). Sometimes, I get a grid pattern, usually horiz lines and some files open as usual. I am assuming something has been tweaked inadvertently somewhere and I would like to remove it. These lines do not appear in Normal view nor in Print Preview bit. I have not actually printed them to see if they come through, but it is annoying on screen. I can't see anything obvious in the settings, Table>Show Gridlines is off. There is no shading patterns in Format>Borders and Shading, no funny themes active. Any ideas?     - Incorrect Cursor Position - Word 2003 My cursor is appearing right at the top edge of the on screen white area. I don't see the top grey area, or bottom grey area at 75% zoom. If I zoom down to 50% I can see the grey area at the bottom, but not at the top. Documents printout with text positioned correctly on top margin and print preview shows correct position as well. I know one or two other people who've had this problem (including at work - I work as an IT trainer) but no-one seems to remember how they fixed it. We use Word 2000 at work.     - Mark a single index entry creates entries for all bulleted lines I have a 600 page document that I need to create an index for. At one point I tried using the Master Document but gave up after much frustration. After I abanded that idea I created it as a singe document. I began getting the error: This documnet may be corrupt. I located Microsoft's Q241581 document and the cause is a build up of list templates created by frequent switching between a bullet list and a number list. I corrected the problem per the instructions. The problem now is when I try to mark a single index entry and create an index, it creates an entry for every bulleted line.     - Index Entries messing up the keyboard This may sound strange but.... Updated Windows (XP Pro) and Office (2003) this morning. Had to restart. Now when I Word docs with Index entries in them my keyboard won't work in the lines that have these entries. Example. Select text within a line that has an index entry and the "Delete" key won't work. Try to select by using SHIFT-Arrow Down, once it hits a line with an index entry it will open the "File" menu and scroll around in it instead of selecting additional text.     - Record 21 was an empty record Is anyone here familiar with any "Mail Merge" settings? I've been trying to get a set of templates ready over that last couple weeks. Checking compatibility for use with Word97, Word2000, Word2003 and WordXP. Suddenly, (a couple days ago) my templates (both labels and form letters) have started reporting "Empty Record" errors as in the message above. This seems to happen now every time I attempt to merge a template (even a brand new one). It also seems to happen using all Word versions listed above (I'll double check to be sure). The "empty record" is always the record AFTER my selection. ie. I print 20 records (the 21st is always an empty record). Another thing which may be related is that NOW when I "Merge" the New Document is displayed in separate Word Window. Up until a couple days ago, both the template and the New Document were displayed one at a time in the same Word window. I tried Googling for a solution and I found other references to the problem but no solutions. I also checked MSKnowledge base but found no mention of the problem there. The empty record errors are pointless and EXTREMELY annoying and I'd very much like to kick them back to where ever they came from. I'm in need of a "hero".     - Saving Documents in Word Format I need help. I am running Windows 2000 and Word 2003. When I create a new document in Word and tell it to save as a word document.......It will save it but the icon on the file shows up as a Notepad document. If I just double click on the icon to reopen the document, it opens it with notepad but is in unicode. I have to right click on the file name (icon) and go to Open With.....and click on MS Word.     - SmartDocument Solution Not Working Properly with VB.Net Dlls I have a peculiar problem. I developed a smart document solution by putting in some code and making up a dll with VB6. It runs just fine when i attach it to a xml document in word 2003 (as a smart document). However i converted that vb6 project into VB.net project and by adding smarttag 2.0 tag library in references and when i build the solution, it compiles fine and gives the reqd. dll . I ran the setPolicy.bat and tried to attach this DLL to the word document by means of a manifest file (with <managed/> in it) it fails to find to load the DLL. It throws up an error saying that "the expansion pack is either missing or invalid contact your sysadmin".     - Word Macro Trouble - Please Help Newbie! I'm trying to take a merged document, have the VB macro chop each range as a separate file and save it as a filename specified by the first field. When using the outline format and tabing forward for a subsection, the
outline numbering will not indent or change. Also, when in the outline
format application, reverse tab (shift+tab) does not work.

On the AutoFormat As You Type tab of Tools | AutoCorrect, check the box for
"Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces."
