When I highlight a word in a sentence, I can not remove the word by typing
over it or backspace. Highlighting and deleting is the only option. This is
not an insert problem. So in the first sentence if I wanted to replace
"word", I would go and highlight it and type "sentence". The word "word"
would remain and sentence would then be in front.

Go to Tools > Options > Edit and check the box "Typing replaces selection".
