I have Word 2007 installed on my main workstation (upgraded from 2003) and
every time I open the application, the default format for documents reverts
back to 2003 format. I will go to the Save settings and change it back, but
it ultimately switches back again. I tried a repair, renaming the
Normal.dot file and nothing seems to work.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Have you actually changed the setting under Word Options, Save tab? (Alt+F,

It sounds like something is stopping changes to the registry or normal.dotm.
This is usually the result of a third party add-in or utility. Are you able
to change and save other default settings such as the default font or page
margins for new blank documents? Do you have any horrible registry utility
such as CCCleaner?

I do run CCleaner, but after the issue had already occurred. It hasn't
removed any registry settings for Word that I could find.

The add-in's running are Adobe Acrobat 8 Pro, MapPoint 2006, Office
Live/Mesh Beta, Accounting 2008 (which I hate the Small Business Contact
Mgr). I am able to able to change any of the Word document settings without
issue.

Run Regedit and navigate to the Word DataKey and delete it. Does this now
let you save the default format?

Word DataKey

That doesn't appear to work either. I did it twice with a reboot each time
and it still tries to save as 2003 version. I have verified there are no
rogue add-ins and checked the other settings and everything appears to be
okay.

Would you please confirm that you are definitely changing the setting under
Word Options and not in SaveAs Options dialog?

To clarify, I mean Word Options, Save tab, (Alt+F, I, S) and change the box
'Save Files in the is Format' to 'Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc)'. Close the
dialog and press F12, does it show the correct format in the SaveAs Type
option box?

Yes and yes. It will hold the .docx option in SaveAs until the next reboot
and then it resets back to .doc as the default format.

If it takes a reboot to revert rather than just closing/opening Word, it
suggests that something is messing with the registry. I would suspect either
a registry cleaning utility (something like CCCleaner) or an over-protective
security utility that is blocking what it thinks are unauthorized registry
changes.

Re: Word 2007 Save Properties Reverts Back to 2003 Format by Karl

So, how do I fix? I don't run CCleaner other than removing temp files, so
it doesn't do any registry editing. I deleted the Data registry and it
still comes back. The only security utility I run is Symantec Corporate
Edition. No firewall, spyware blocker, etc.

Thanks!
