The first of two things:

1. I get an error on Excel that tells me that the files
is being open by another user. This happens on all Excel
files that I open. The directory that the excel files are
stored in is on a network shared. I've checked the
permissions to make sure that it is not set to read only.
The permission on the folder itself has no restrictive
permissions.

2. The word problem is similar. I get a read only when I
open any word files. Once again the files and folders do
not have any restrictive permissions.

I've tried reinstalling Office once before.

If anyone has cany recommendations on how to fix this,
that would be great.

Brian, in answer to your questions,

1. If the file is on a shared network, the solution is
pretty elementary - someone else is using the file,
therefore you need to save it on your local workstation's
harddrive or a floppy or some other medium. If not, then
check with your network administrator.

2. Again, the solution is that someone else is using the
file and you do what I suggested above.

Reinstalling will do nothing but cause headaches.

The suggestions that you have suggested have been done.
One other thing that I forgot to mention is that the first
time I open the file, it indicates that it is a read only,
then I close it and reopn the same file. The second time
I open the file, it permits me to write and save the
file. I've also had the permissions checked and there are
no restrictive permissions set to the file or directory or
folder. There is no one that has access to the file
except me. So no it is not pretty elementary.

Hi Brian,

How are you opening the files? Are you using File/Open or
double-clicking them from an Exploring window?
