As the title implies. Word 2007 crashes when I try to start it in Vista
Ultimate. Starting Word in safe mode does not help, the office Diagnostic
produced no clues and reported everything as fine.

I was typing out a letter(no template) when the inital crash occured.

I have tried deleting the Data folder registery key without success.

Is there any error message when you (try to) start in Safe Mode?

Is your printer driver OK?

Safe Mode or not it reads, 'Microsoft Office Word has stopped working.'

I have never had a printer connected or setup for this computer.

Word MUST have a printer driver to work: it cannot work without one. Please
install a printer driver (it doesn't matter if you don't have a printer, the
driver is sufficient).

A few things.

I've been using Word actively on this computer / installation for about 3
months without a printer and without issues.

I have AdobePDF, Fax and XPS Doc writer listed under printers. How to
install a specific printer driver with hooking up the hardware in beyond me.
Even so, I've never owned a printer and yet Word has always worked, for years.

You can install a Generic printer driver by selecting Add/Remove printers,
Local Printer and choosing Generic from the list. This installs a generic
Windows printer driver. Make it the Default printer.

I have been having a similar problem and tried to find the file that you
suggested but have had no luck. My word will not completely open a document.
When I double click to open it, word comes up but it will not show the
document. If I go to file then open and find the document, it will open it
normally, but I cannot move the cursor through the doc at all and I cannot
edit anything. If I try to settings under word options, it will not let me
select any settings. The popular settings tab is already selected and it will
not let me chose any others tabs. I have un-installed word only then
re-installed it with no change. Does anyone have any ideas?

I should also mention that when I try to close a document, it says word has
stopped working. I click close and it reopens again after it looks for a
solution to the problem. Word opens again and when I click close it says not
working again then it closes.
