I am using Windows XP Home edition SP1:on HP Pavillion ze
5702.
I am using the Windows XP CD & CD-RW handling software,
having uninstalled all other cd writing applications.
I can write to the CD-RW using drag in Explorer & using
Send To & using Copy & Paste.
If I open a file from the CD-RW into Word, it says it is
read only. If I try & Save As, even with a new file
name, I get the error message "Word cannot save or create
this file, ensure that the disc is not full, write
protected or damaged".
I have put in Office SP1 & SP2 & those parts of SP3 which
pertain to Word.
Anyother ideas anyone?

You should NEVER save a document directly to any Removable media: always
save to the HDD. In the case of a CD-RW, Windows does not provide packet
writing allowing you to write to a CD as though it is a floppy. Even if it
did, the advice is just the same: NEVER do it. It is the easiest way to
corrupt a document.

The files are reported Read Only because files on a CD are read only. You
need to COPY the files from the CD to your local HDD and then select them
(all together if there's more than one), right-click and select Properties
and then clear the read Only attribute.
