It doesn't. What you are seing is the differences between SDI and MDI. See
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/customization/SDIMDI.htm for more information.

Word XP Broken Text by Mike

I have broken text problems in English. It just started showing up. For
instance, on the word English in the previous sentence, the "l" and the "i"
are nearly merged into one. The "n" in the word "sentence" in the previous
line is cut off and incomplete. What is going on? Is there a download form
Microsoft I can get to fix it? I have tried "Fix Broken Text" under "Tools,"
but it tells me to install my original XP Office disk which I don't have.

Also, I sometimes get Java errors or Runtime errors. Please advise what's
going on. I did install Microsoft Service Pack II. I have an HP Pavilion 7935
with Windows XP.

Fix Broken Text is a command not used for English-language documents, I
think. Are the problems you're experiencing in the display only, or does the
text print incorrectly as well? If the latter, then the problem is probably
with the printer driver. If the former, the display driver.
