 - Word 2000: Document may be corrupt When I open some documents, a message is displayed that "Document may be corrupt...". However, the documents load OK.  - Development of Word 6/7/8/9 Hi, I'm preparing some notes for my students on software maintenance and am making some comments on adding new features versus re-writing the whole package. I'd appreciate it if someone can read over what is below (constructed from my own patchy memory of reviews) and point out any errors. Thanks. -- To upgrade or overhaul? With any piece of software that faces maintenance over a long period of time, there can be so many changes applied to the original that it may become progressively more difficult to maintain. Imagine a building that has many extensions added to it, leading to a maze of corridors that are difficult to navigate and a series of wiring and plumbing modifications that lead to lots of 'tracking' along walls and ceilings. Far from being useful and efficient, many problems have been introduced. Because the building has become inefficient and ugly, it may be cost-effective to knock it down and do everything that is wanted nowadays more efficiently. The same is true of software. As more and more features are added and changes made to the original design, developers may eventually re-write the system to avoid having a huge system full of procedures that might not even be used any more. For example, Microsoft Word is now in version 11 (marketed as Word 2003). However very little, if anything, of the original program remains. In the mid 1990s, Word version 6 became very popular among users of MS Windows 3. This was a GUI-extension to the DOS operating system. Word 7 was released in 1995 to coincide with Windows 95, the full-GUI replacement for DOS. Word 7 (aka Word 95) was an adaptive change to Word 6. The adaption was to make it run properly on the new operating system. Users noticed few major changes. Word 8 (or, Word 97) was a complete re-write. Because Word 6/7 had been through a lengthy maintenance phase including several service packs, it was known that adding major new features to it could introduce serious problems. Also, as Word 7 (for Windows 95) was an update of Word 6 (for Windows 3) there were some procedures remaining that were probably not used in the Windows 95 version. These were not removed, however just in case of the knock-on consequences. As a result, Word 8 (97) was the result of a new design in order to streamline the product. In a similar way, Word 9/2000 was an adaptive improvement to Word 8 and Word 10 (marketed as XP) was a re-write.  - Word and copy/pasting Every time I copy text from another program - usually from an internet site or adobe document - and then paste it into Word, Word crashes. Of course it restores the document but only after I close Word and restart the application again. Is this error due to bad software?? How can I fix it so I don't have to deal with this problem??  - Help: WORD XP applies formatting to WHOLE document (not just selected paragraph) Hi, I use MS Word XP both on a XP Pro and Win2000 PCs (2 separate computers at my work). Both Wors and the OS support Hebrew besides US English. Both these two WORD installations suffer from the following problem: When I select a line or paragraph and modify it's formatting (e.g., Bold, Italic, Underline, centered, font size etc.) WORD applies the format change to the whole document. Pressing CTRL-Z immediately afterwards achieves the desired result - returning the formatting of the whole document, except for the selected line/paragraph, to its former formatting.  - locked document in word I am using Windows XP, Word 2002. After opening either a new or old document, i am unable to type or use most menu items. It gives me the following error message: "This command is not available because the document is locked for edit." I am also unable to access word safe mode by using the /a switch.  - Fatal Execution Engine Error We have downloaded the Microsoft Works Suite 2003 with the disks that came with our computer. They worked for a couple of days and now it is showing us an error. The error reads: Fatal Execution Engine Error, This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package. I cannot uninstall Microsoft Word without an error message also. I have unistalled everything on the computer that was downloaded by those CD's and reinstalled them and nothing works.  - "fatal error" when trying to change printer-defaults Hallo, can anyone help me? When I try to change the printer-configuration (menu: File/Print/Printer) word 97 (under windows 2000) hangs and has to be restarted. Doing the same after login as "administrator" works fine This error happens after the system worked without problems before.¨ I would be very, very grateful for a good hint!  - please help, please? Hi, I have been having a problem with Word. I start to type and all of a sudden, the word I am typing shows up somewhere else in the document. If i am not watching the screen, I can type an entire sentence or paragraph and have it show up somehere in the begining of the document. It is driving me crazy!.  - product key I have no idea if this is the right place to post my problem or not, but it seemed better than the others. I took my computer in for repair after it had been affected by a virus. A new driver had to be installed, but now microsoft word and other applications will not work because the product key is said to be invalid. Everything was acquired legally, and i can't figure out why this product ID is now not working.  - insert date Hi, If I insert the date into a word 2000 document (01/03/03 format) what I see on the screen is just what I need, but when I print out a hard copy the date is corrupt this can be random letters or numbers or both. I am also told the mail merge will not work on this PC.  - MS Word 97 - wild card in File Open dialog yields error message Hi all. I need some help. A partner in my firm is trying to do a wild card search for documents in Word 97. He goes to File - Open. In the "File Name" box he types "*.rtf" or "*.*" or "filename.*" or anything with asterisk in it. The "file type" option is set to "All files" . When he clicks OPEN it returns an error message saying "you do not have permissions to folder "*.rtf" " It is not a permissions issue since this happens on all directories of his drive and network drives.  - Document creating extra pages in Word97 but not other versions of Word I have a large document, that when opened in Word 97, creates roughly 10,000 more pages than are actually in the document. The status bar says something to the effect of "Word is repaginating..." and continues to add more and mroe pages. When opening this same document in other Word versions (XP, 2000) this does not occur. Has this ever happened to anyone? I think it may have something to do with the tables that are at the end of the document. The table header is printed at the top of each page, however when I try to delete it, it will not delete. Do you have journaling enabled in Outlook? If you have Outlook installed
(even if you have never used it), journaling (keeping track of each document
opened or closed) for Word and Excel is enabled by default. You can disable
it by opening Outlook and going to Tools | Options | Preferences: Journal
Options.
