Saving to a floppy is one of the most common causes of document corruption.
Attempting to open a document from a floppy is even more likely to corrupt
it. The document may already be unsalvageable, but your best hope is to
first copy the document from the floppy to the hard drive, then (if Word
still can't open it) use the "Recover Text from Any File" setting in the
File Open dialog. In future, tell your daughter always to save to the HD and
copy to the floppy, then copy from the floppy to the HD and open from there.

The reason for this is that Word must create temporary files in the document
folder when a document is opened. It creates an additional temp file each
time the document is saved. When the storage location is a floppy, it can
quickly be filled up. Moreover, if you inadvertently remove the floppy
before Word is finished moving data and closing all the temporary files,
you're done for.
