In Word 2003, I create a table of contents and everything seems to work fine
- all the page numbers are correct for the page of text. When I look at it in
page preview, however, all the pages show (on the TOC) as page 1. I then have
to close the preview, close the document, reopen it, and click on F9 to redo
the TOC. Has anyone else had this problem? How did you fix it?

By "page preview" do you mean Print Preview or Reading Layout view? The
latter is known to mess with TOCs.

I am using the File - Print Preview when I see this happen.

As a reply to 'myself,' what I have found from other sources is that Word
apparently forces the user to regenerate the TOC each time the document is
opened, whether for viewing or editing. In other words, the F9 key must be
pressed each time I access the document with a TOC - when I do that, the page
numbers are correct.
