I am having problems opening word 95 documents in word 2000. Whenever I open
a document created in word 95 it hangs for about 5 mins and then opens. It
opens all other documents exept to ones created in word 95. I have done all
the usual things like delete temp files, ran defrag, scandisk, reinstalled
office, installed service pack 2 and 3. The files are on a network share, but
its nothing to do with that as I moved it to my PC and the problem was still
there. Can anyone assist me in my problem?

Russ

The likelihood is that these files were based on a template that has been
moved or deleted (or the connection was lost when you moved the file from
the network to your local machine). Word is looking for the template. This
will actually take longer when you are connected to the network (a lot more
files to search) than when you are not. Once the file is open, you could
attach Normal.dot or some other template. This will not affect the
formatting of the document provided "Automatically update document styles"
is NOT enabled.

You were right about that I have got it to work on one of the documents
created in word 95. The only thing is I am trying to do this on a lot of word
documents created in word 95 and if I had to do this to all my documents it
would take me ages. Is there anyway I can resolve this problem by not going
through this long process.

I think there may be a way to do it, but it requires VBA, with which I can't
help you (though perhaps someone else here can). But if you can disconnect
from the network while you do it, you won't experience the delay in opening,
which at least would help.
