Hi,

I operate Windows XP, Word 2002, and other office 2000
component, Power Point Excel. I have just updated it
all, using the update wizard in Microsoft web site.
Since this update, I can not open any file using the
above applications. In Word I get an error message, "The
file xxx.doc is not available.". In Power Point the
error is "The path or file name for xxx.ppt is invalid.
Please check that the path and file name are correct".
In Excel, I get "Unable to read file".
These error are the same whether I attempt to open the
file by double clicking from the explorer window or from
within the application. Also, this occurs to file I have
worked recently as well as for dummy file I have just now
created, saved and tried to open again.

Thank you,
M Rosen

If you also use Norton AV then go to Norton Options and in the
Miscellaneous section turn off: "Enable Office Plug-in"

Thank you for your response.
I use a Norton AV, Corp edition that does not have this
choice. However, I have completely disabled the AV
program. The problem persists.
Since I could not survive without Word, I have
reinstalled it, and it works just fine, of course no
update yet. I would prefer not to reinstall the rest of
the Office.

M Rosen.

If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office
Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:
