    - Solution to Word being slow to open documents (!) I have finally found a solution to a problem which affects Word 97 running on Windows 2000 Professional. It may also affect lots of other things. Basically some people find that opening documents in Word (particularly over a network) can take minutes, if the document is large. There are many documented causes for this, but none of the solutions ever fixed the problem for me. But please read on. The solution is quite amazing. The problem can occur when you double-click a document in Windows Explorer to open it, and is particularly bad with large documents (hundreds of pages). If the Folder Options setting in Windows Explorer is set to "Show hidden files and folders" the document can take a huge amount of time to open (several minutes), and the CPU usage while opening is low (15% to 20%). If the folder options setting is changed to "Do not show hidden files and folders" the document loads about 10 times faster, and the CPU usage is much higher while it is loading. I don't know why this happens, but the solution is to set your folder options to "Do not show hidden files and folders". Opening the document through the File/Open menu in Word will be fast if the document is not selected in Explorer, but just having the document selected in Explorer will cause the open to be slow (with Show hidden files and folders) even when opening through Word's File/Open menu. If anyone else knows why this occurs I would love to know. I have attempted to report this problem/solution to Microsoft, but I'm not sure if I've been successful and I'm not prepared to spend a long time doing this.     - MS-Word psychotic text boxes! Howdy there, all MicroSofties. My apologies for the massive cross-posting, but I am simply stymied. I'm writing a document in MS-Word. It's from MS-Office 2003 v11.5604.5606, if that information you get from the tab named "About MS-Office" means anything. This document is rife with flow charts (OK, it has eight. On the other hand, it's an 8-page document, so I imagine "rife" about suits it). In fact, that's the main reason for this document: to display and describe the flow charts. I use a lot of text boxes to hold labels; most have no border lines and no fill color. Lately, say over the last several hours, I have had text boxes behave strangely: I'll have one in one part of a figure with [wouldn't you know] text in it. Then I'll open another one in the same figure, different area, and begin typing in it. As I'm typing in the new text box, the text is appearing IN BOTH BOXES!!! Sorry for yelling there, but I don't get it. This doesn't appear to happen first thing in a new figure, but somehow after a while, it (MS Word? Office? CLIPPY?) gets this goofy notion that all text must belong to all new text boxes. I'll open another text box and yet another one, and type in one of those, and sure enough, they'll all have all the text. WTF?? Any comments, even rude ones, would be welcome. Thanks a bunch. Dale.     - Tracking, AutoCorrect and Numbering I'm editing a document and have Tracking turned on. When I use any of my custom auto correct entries, Word will randomly change the numbering further down the document and track the changes as if I'd purposely changed the numbering. Worse, it adjusts the numbering far enough down the document that the affected numbering is just below the bottom of the screen and not visible until I work my way down the document.     - Word not behaving like Normal Hi there, I have a problem with Word. When I first open it, it says: "Word cannot open the existing (Normal)" I click OK and can start using it. Then when I go to shut it down it says: "The file Normal already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?" If I click YES it says: "You cannot save while the file is in use by another process. Try saving the file with a new name." I have tried to save Normal with a new name but it won't let me. If I click NO it takes me to the Templates saving window which I click cancel. I then try to close windows again and it says: Changes have been made that affect the global template, Normal. Do you want to save those changes? If I say no - I can shut down windows. Again, it I try to save it says "You cannot save while the file is in use by another process.     - troubleshoot create an envelope while in MS Word using Outlook While in the Microsoft Word program I click on the Envelope icon, then click on the Microsoft Outlook address book (not Outlook Express) (before I was able to access the addresses and create envelopes while in Word) and the computer locks up and takes MS Word away and recovers all documents in it.     - Problems with Spell check I have a 300+ page document that I need to have spell checked. For som reason, WORD only checks certain parts of the document. I have foun several misspelled words, but I cannot seem to get WORD to recogniz them. I have tried selecting and then checking, I have tried to g into the edit/replace and then to format and to language and then t turn off spell check. I have turned it off, on, etc. There is a gra check mark in the box before I do anything.     - TOA Marks in text are not hidden--how do I fix it? Table of Authority marks are supposed to be hidden text, but they aren't. As a result, the page numbers are all wrong.     - KB 907417 & 908002 Hi; Just to confirm, if I have run the latest windows update and it shows no updates for Word, then the fixes in KB907417 should be on my machine - correct? I have never run the fix in KB907417 and on my dev machine it has version 7.10.5077.0 but my test system, which shows no pending office updates, has 7.10.3191.0. So it looks like I do have to install it. Do we run this same update for Word 2002 and Word 2000? Or is there a different update in their cases? And for our customers, I assume we have to point them at this fix? Or will it be included in the Windows update soon? Or can we include it in our install? Does it just update this one dll? For KB908002, this is added to the setup program. However, we use WIX (the official Microsoft installer) for our setup.     - orientation of envelope printing Win XP Home, Office XP Pro, HP 990 printer. About a month ago, envelopes of all sizes began printing 90 degrees off proper orientation.     - Header/Footer Problem Using Word 2000. When I open a file, and click on View Header/Footer, sometimes the header and footer open correctly for editing. But sometimes, they open with only lines and boxes available for editing, and the rest of the text is grayed out. And suddenly the right 1/2 inch is off the screen, and when I type into it, the text jumps about 4 inches, so the word I'm typing is in the center of the screen and I can't see the left margin by 4 inches. If I keep typing, after a while it jumps back and I lose the right most text again. It prints fine.     - Word freezes on open, and never opens On a friend's computer, MS word 2003 freezes up when trying to start, and never actually opens. Task manager must be employed to stop the process. I feel bad because he is on the west coast, I am on the east, so I cannot just run over and troubleshoot it. I coached him through starting with no templates (ie "winword.exe /a") and that successfully opened the program in safe mode, but he can't open any existing docs. We then deleted all instances of "Normal.dot" and tried to start, and got the exact same result, splash screen but no init of the program. Next we used the start with no templates option (As above), selected [help] then [detect and repair] option, let it run and still no resolution. I even went so far as to have him uninstall and reinstall to no avail. This is peculiar behavior to say the least. This machine is less than a month old, and safely stashed behind a very capable firewall / server setup, so malware is not the culprit (yes, we checked). Anyone have any suggestions?     - word locks my document Hi! I'm a system administrator at a school and we've got this big stupid problem. Today there were three full computer rooms with thin clients and the keep getting their documents locked. Without them locking it at all. It just locks and all buttons get grey and they can't write anything on it. It's not even possible to save the document. And they keep ketting the "do you want to save changes to NORMAL.DOT" Somehow I believe these two are connected somehow. The normal.dot and the lockup. And yes, I have activated Office and all the software that comes along with it. Why has Microsoft programmed this? Why would somebody want to program Word so that it locks the documents of people? And I would understand why this is an issue if they have shared the same user. But they dont'! They only have one user and are not connected on another station or anything. The problem we have is that certain documents, opened either across the network or from a local drive take up to ten minutes to open and sometimes fail completely. They do however open fine in WordPad. I have found no obvious common factors in the documents and they appear to be no different to others that are OK. Typically they can be 50+ pages, contain tables, other embedded documents (or not), various formatting and page layouts. Also, we experienced this problem a few months ago and it just went away before we figured it out. I read the MVP document "Problems Opening Word" and tried the obvious but got nowhere. The problem does not affect all documents and is not specific to certain machines, though when taking them off the office machines and onto my own personal laptop it goes away???     - Font size I'm having trouble with the equation editor, in that a digit written with Word and the same digit written with the Equation editor are slightly different sizes.     - IE cannot open MS Office files over SSL connection, no problem in Firefox I have an odd issue, not sure which group to post it in, but here goes... I have a secured web environment running Apache 1.3.33 and Tomcat 5.5.9 on a RedHat Linux server. On one page of our java application, we have stored some reference documentation including pdf files, xls files, doc files txt files etc. When users using IE (generally IE5.5, 6.0 or 6.0Sp1) try to download any Microsoft Office type files from this page, either to view them or to right click and save-as them, they get the error "Internet Explorere cannot download thefile.doc from yourserver.com. Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site was either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later." These users can download any other types of files from this page (i.e. gif, jpeg, txt, html, pdf etc) We have some users that use Firefox and they have no issues downloading any files from this page. We have a development environment that differs mostly in that it is not secured. From this site, there is no problem with downloading the files. I've found references on the MS Support site about registry edits to disable caching that didn't work for me (setting BypassHTTPNoCacheCheck to 1) and others that said it was a result of having Cache-control: no-cache,max-age=0,must-revalidate in the headers. I printed my headers and found cache-control: max-age=0, but only on the non-ssl site. The SSL site doesn't print this value. I tried setting a response.setHeader("cache-control", "max-age=15") but I know next to nothing about this and am just guessing. Sorry to ramble so much... Any one have an idea? minimized button to "restore" the it, the entire program disappears and I
have to restart it from the shortcut on my desktop. Does anybody know why
this is happening? How to fix it? I already did a disk restore for the
application and it didn't fix the problem. Thank you.
