    - Trouble With Document in Word 2003 Under WinXP Pro I have a couple of documents that won't print. A while back, I narrowed the problem down to the presence of Index entries in the documents' bodies. Problem was, there is no Index in the document. The text that's causing problems was copied into the document from another document, which had proper Index entries in the body and an Index at the end of the document. When I copied the test, I could not see the Index entries. I've tried scanning the doc for "XE" entries, which I deleted. However, something else is still preventing the document from printing.     - in word when I try to open a file I get a message saying that the. the file is unavailable. This just started happening. It does not matter if I am openning a file on the local machine or on the server. I have tried creating a new file and it saves correctly so that other machines will open it, but this machine still says that the file is unavailable.     - backspace brings up explorer 2 days ago backspace stopped deleting characters and instead it brings up internet explorer up. i had to be careful while writing this as if i backspace on my errors i get a new page of explorer for every push of backspace so i use delete by moving the cursor in front now. the option Tools | Options | Edit: Typing replaces selection is ticked but its not the control for this i think. any help on getting our backspace to delete, rather than open i.explorer, as before. it does it in word, outlook. thanks katya Tag: Normal.dot Tag: 100695

    - Error when creating links in Work Doc I have created a User Form and when I send the form to another user, the links no longer work properly. It shows an error where the links were. Error is "Error, not a valid link." I am now also getting this error on some of the forms I created prior to sending.     - MS Word is doing weird things. Word 97 from Office 97, installed on XP Professional w/SP2 & security updates. I'm logged on to my computer as myself. I'm the only user on this computer. When I attempt to open a MS Word document I've previously created, I get a strange message. "C:\...\Some Document.doc is being used by my User Name. Do you want to make a copy?" Some Document.Doc is not the actual document name; User Name is not my actual user name. I substitute them here for the real names. The document is there behind the dialog box when the message pops up. If I click "Cancel" I can work with the document. If I click OK, it gives me another strange message: "Word cannot open the document. Try one or more of the following: *On the File menu, click Open to open the document *Make sure the document has a .DOC extension (C:\...\Some Docume...)" Clicking OK at this point also lets me work with the document. Any suggestions? I'm able to use the program, access my documents for now, but it's annoying.     - spell check Yesterday whenever i went into word or access, spell checker would be operating. I had a hard time making it disappear. I reset and then restarted my comp. No help.     - MS Office Word 2003 - Restore Problem When I "minimize" the captioned application, NO PROBLEM. When I click on the minimized button to "restore" the it, the entire program disappears and I have to restart it from the shortcut on my desktop. Does anybody know why this is happening?     - Solution to Word being slow to open documents (!) I have finally found a solution to a problem which affects Word 97 running on Windows 2000 Professional. It may also affect lots of other things. Basically some people find that opening documents in Word (particularly over a network) can take minutes, if the document is large. There are many documented causes for this, but none of the solutions ever fixed the problem for me. But please read on. The solution is quite amazing. The problem can occur when you double-click a document in Windows Explorer to open it, and is particularly bad with large documents (hundreds of pages). If the Folder Options setting in Windows Explorer is set to "Show hidden files and folders" the document can take a huge amount of time to open (several minutes), and the CPU usage while opening is low (15% to 20%). If the folder options setting is changed to "Do not show hidden files and folders" the document loads about 10 times faster, and the CPU usage is much higher while it is loading. I don't know why this happens, but the solution is to set your folder options to "Do not show hidden files and folders". Opening the document through the File/Open menu in Word will be fast if the document is not selected in Explorer, but just having the document selected in Explorer will cause the open to be slow (with Show hidden files and folders) even when opening through Word's File/Open menu. If anyone else knows why this occurs I would love to know. I have attempted to report this problem/solution to Microsoft, but I'm not sure if I've been successful and I'm not prepared to spend a long time doing this.     - MS-Word psychotic text boxes! Howdy there, all MicroSofties. My apologies for the massive cross-posting, but I am simply stymied. I'm writing a document in MS-Word. It's from MS-Office 2003 v11.5604.5606, if that information you get from the tab named "About MS-Office" means anything. This document is rife with flow charts (OK, it has eight. On the other hand, it's an 8-page document, so I imagine "rife" about suits it). In fact, that's the main reason for this document: to display and describe the flow charts. I use a lot of text boxes to hold labels; most have no border lines and no fill color. Lately, say over the last several hours, I have had text boxes behave strangely: I'll have one in one part of a figure with [wouldn't you know] text in it. Then I'll open another one in the same figure, different area, and begin typing in it. As I'm typing in the new text box, the text is appearing IN BOTH BOXES!!! Sorry for yelling there, but I don't get it. This doesn't appear to happen first thing in a new figure, but somehow after a while, it (MS Word? Office? CLIPPY?) gets this goofy notion that all text must belong to all new text boxes. I'll open another text box and yet another one, and type in one of those, and sure enough, they'll all have all the text. WTF?? Any comments, even rude ones, would be welcome. Thanks a bunch. Dale.     - Tracking, AutoCorrect and Numbering I'm editing a document and have Tracking turned on. When I use any of my custom auto correct entries, Word will randomly change the numbering further down the document and track the changes as if I'd purposely changed the numbering. Worse, it adjusts the numbering far enough down the document that the affected numbering is just below the bottom of the screen and not visible until I work my way down the document.     - Problems with Spell check I have a 300+ page document that I need to have spell checked. For som reason, WORD only checks certain parts of the document. I have foun several misspelled words, but I cannot seem to get WORD to recogniz them. I have tried selecting and then checking, I have tried to g into the edit/replace and then to format and to language and then t turn off spell check. I have turned it off, on, etc. There is a gra check mark in the box before I do anything. I have never run the fix in KB907417 and on my dev machine it has version 7.10.5077.0 but my test system, which shows no pending office updates, has 7.10.3191.0. So it looks like I do have to install it. Do we run this same update for Word 2002 and Word 2000? Or is there a different update in their cases?     - orientation of envelope printing Win XP Home, Office XP Pro, HP 990 printer. About a month ago, envelopes of all sizes began printing 90 degrees off proper orientation.     - Header/Footer Problem Using Word 2000. When I open a file, and click on View Header/Footer, sometimes the header and footer open correctly for editing. But sometimes, they open with only lines and boxes available for editing, and the rest of the text is grayed out. If I keep typing, after a while it jumps back and I lose the right most text again. It prints fine.     - Word freezes on open, and never opens On a friend's computer, MS word 2003 freezes up when trying to start, and never actually opens. Task manager must be employed to stop the process. I feel bad because he is on the west coast, I am on the east, so I cannot just run over and troubleshoot it. I coached him through starting with no templates (ie "winword.exe /a") and that successfully opened the program in safe mode, but he can't open any existing docs. We then deleted all instances of "Normal.dot" and tried to start, and got the exact same result, splash screen but no init of the program. Next we used the start with no templates option (As above), selected [help] then [detect and repair] option, let it run and still no resolution. I even went so far as to have him uninstall and reinstall to no avail. This is peculiar behavior to say the least. This machine is less than a month old, and safely stashed behind a very capable firewall / server setup, so malware is not the culprit (yes, we checked). Anyone have any suggestions?     - word locks my document Hi! I'm a system administrator at a school and we've got this big stupid problem. Today there were three full computer rooms with thin clients and the keep getting their documents locked. Without them locking it at all. It just locks and all buttons get grey and they can't write anything on it. It's not even possible to save the document. And they keep ketting the "do you want to save changes to NORMAL.DOT" Somehow I believe these two are connected somehow. The normal.dot and the lockup. And yes, I have activated Office and all the software that comes along with it. Why has Microsoft programmed this? Why would somebody want to program Word so that it locks the documents of people? And I would understand why this is an issue if they have shared the same user. But they dont'! They only have one user and are not connected on another station or anything.     - Problems opening certain word documents (read "Problems opening Word" but did not help) Hi Folks... I hope I'm posting this in the correct place. Anyway, we have Office XP (SP3) running on Windows XP (latest patches applied). The documents we produce are often quite complex and large. The problem we have is that certain documents, opened either across the network or from a local drive take up to ten minutes to open and sometimes fail completely. They do however open fine in WordPad. I have found no obvious common factors in the documents and they appear to be no different to others that are OK. Typically they can be 50+ pages, contain tables, other embedded documents (or not), various formatting and page layouts. Also, we experienced this problem a few months ago and it just went away before we figured it out. I read the MVP document "Problems Opening Word" and tried the obvious but got nowhere. The problem does not affect all documents and is not specific to certain machines, though when taking them off the office machines and onto my own personal laptop it goes away??? In Word, click on Tools | Options | File Locations, and note the
folder designated for User Templates. That is the folder where
your Normal.dot template is stored. In some versions of Office
and Windows, the file and folder are hidden, so you have to turn
on display of hidden files and folders in Windows Explorer or My
Computer by clicking on Tools | Folder Options | View tab | click
the "Show hidden files and folders" radio button | OK.

As he said, he can not open Word. Try opening Word from Start/Run -
Type: Winword .exe /a
If it starts up, then you can troubleshoot further.
