On a new Vista Sp1 PC and new install of Office 2007 Pro, when I open Word,
about 1 out of 3 times I get the message box: "Microsoft Word has Stopped
Working" etc. When Word opens, it works fine.
The other Office apps do not have the problem and work fine.
Any thoughts on the cause will be appreciated.

Most usual cause is a bad printer driver set as Windows default (especially
HP drivers). But see the following FAQ for a fuller run down:

Thanks Terry, excellent trouble-shooting guide, but no joy:
I tried setting all printers off-line, no help, then turned on one at a time
set to
default.
I deleted normal.dotm.
The Word Start-up folder is empty
I deleted the data key.

The only thing that works is winword.exe /a...!
Any other ideas?

Starting OK in Safe Mode would indicate a bad third party add-in. See how to
find add-ins

Terry, you are a genius...its fixed...there was pdf995.dot in the C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup, my favorite PDF converter.
Thanks a million for the expertise!
