The work-around for this "unknown" problem is combersome and time-consuming.
Simply find a "Normal.dot" file on another computer, copy it, and restore it
to the problem computer. Instant fix.

I don't know the problem to which you rather obliquely refer but if the cure
is a 'new' normal template then all you need do is locate your own
(typically in C:\Documents and Settings\(userid)\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates on Windows XP) and rename it. Word will then create
a new one from built-in defaults next time it is started.

The problem in question can be cured by choosing the One preset picture in
Format | Columns. This must be done in Normal.dot to affect all new
documents.
