Help...when I try and insert a symbol in a Word doc
(insert > symbol), the document stops, wants to send an
error report to Microsoft, and then recovers my document
after shutting down. I cannot insert any symbol because
of it. I have run "detect and repair" and it has not
fixed the problem. Any suggestions on how to fix this
permanently?

Have you tried blowing out your normal.dot? I'm not certain where XP Home
stores the templates, but you can search for it. Rename it Normal.old and
then start up Word (It'll make a new Normal). Other than that, I'm at a
loss.

The Normal.dot is the global default template that all new word documents
are based upon. It resides where your default template location is.

To find it, you need only go to Word -->tools-->options -->file locations
and see what the path is for "User Templates." I'll bet you find it.

Oh, I forgot one other thing, probably the most important. You have to set
Windows to view hidden files. You can do this by going to any standard
window, ("My Computer" for example) Click on the Tools Menu and go to
"Folder Options." Click on the tab marked "View" and about five or six lines
down in the white space, you'll see a "Hidden Files" option. Select the
option "Show hidden files and folders."
