Every time I open word I get a error messege

Every time I try to open a document in microsoft office word 2003, the
program freezes. Then a error messege pops up stating that word needs to shut
down and it asks if I want to recover the document and then restarts, only to
start the whole thing over again. What can I do to fix this problem?
