[Error in replacing words via highlighting]

I have an error in deleting words. In the past, if I have any typing
mistake, e.g. I typed "Appla" instead of "Apple", I can highlight "a" and
then type "e" to replace the "a" by "e". However, now, my Word setting have a
strange practice. If I highlight "a" and then "e", it results in "Applea"
.... Could you tell me how to solve this problem?

Go to Tools, Options, Edit tab and recheck the Typing Replace Selection
option.
