    - Dashed awkward dashes The automatic conversion of - or -- to dash seems to be an entirely random process. Sometimes, a nice little blue underline tag appears to ask permission; sometimes a dash just appears; most of the time nothing happens? If one applies dashes by autoformatting after the event - even if all the other boxes are unticked - the whole doc layout is changed as well. Why is there no 'dash' key (can I assign one?)? (I used to use 'alt' keys to add such characters but most of the time nothing seems to happen when I use either the 'Alt' or 'Alt Gr' keys plus the relevant number for these or fractions or accents these days.)     - New doc starts on top edge of page? I notice that when copying text from the web into Word for reformatting before printing, the font often changes to Times New Roman even though I have the default set to Lucida and the original was neither? Since one of these instances, new Word docs now open with the cursor right at the top edge of the page even though the default settings are still normal. If I then open View Header and Footer, and close then close them, the cursor moves down to the proper position. What is going on and how to correct?     - Word 2003: Double-Click on .doc doesn't work Hi, I have a problem with Word2003 suddently. From windows explorer, when double-clicking on a .doc or right-clicking+open/edit on a doc, Word opens but it doesn't open the document, neither displays an error. It just starts with no open documents at all (even without a blank). I've tried opening documents from within word and it loads them correctly. I tried repairing (with sortcuts repairing)and then uninstalling complete office+installing again+installing SP2 but still the same. No other office application has such problem, only word.     - Word attachment in Outlook does not open A word file sent as an attachment will not open - double-clicking or right-clicking and selecting open has no effect. When this happens, saving the file to the hard drive is possible but Word can still not open the file. The file will open in WordPad, and files not from outlook will open, but trying to open the file in word has no effect. No error message, no crash, not even an hourglass.. This does not always happen, but once it happens it continues to happen until the computer is restarted. Can anyone help?     - Lost a document, permissions problem! Hi folks-- I lost an MS Word document last nite, and when I attempted to recover the document from the MS Word file menu,, I got one of those "permission errors" after I clicked on the document name in the File menu. I was attempting to save it onto a floppy. I'm using MS Word 2000 on a Dell Inspiron 3700 with 256 MB RAM and running on Microsoft Me. Here's the verbiage, more or less, that I saw after I tried to open the document last nite after thinking I had saved it properly! Document name or path is not Valid." Then it tells me to try these suggestions, "Check the file permission for the document or drive," and, "use the file open dialog box to locate the document." I hope someone here can help on this--I lost over an hour's worth of revisions on an English assignment--and I'd much rather try and recover what I had instead of trying to rewrite!     - Hyperlinks changing on copy from server Create a new word doc on the server. Hit save to ensure you are working on the server. Insert>Hyperlink: type some text, make the address: file:\\server\share\dork.txt Save the document If I open it on the server, the link stays the same. If I copy the file to my desktop, then open the desktop version, it now says: file:///C:\Documents and Settings\user\Desktop\dork.txt If I then delete the file from the server, and copy the one from my desktop, the hyperlink is now fixed! Word is doing something to the file, but I can't see how to fix this. If I work completely on my local machine, all hyperlinks to files/directories remain intact when copied up to the server, and even remain intact when I copy that file back off the server. It's only when working on the server that links to servers break on a copy off the server. The copy off server occurs even when sending an email, breaking all the links. What's up with that?     - How do I get Word to display all of my linked worksheet not just . When I link or insert an Excel file into Word it cuts off the last five columns of data. I have tried inserting it as a link and as an embedded object and tried everything I can think of to get it to show the rest of my spreadsheet but it won't.     - Where is the address book for single envelope addressing? MS Word 2000 and prior versions had an envelope addressing database that allowed easy access by an icon. This allowed you to easily click on your desires recipient in the address book and insert the recipient to a Word document or to a single envelope.     - Office 2003 non-admin problems Office 2003 problems occur for users who are not admins, when they are logged in as users on the domain. 1) Access error - 'collating sequence not supported' 2) Word Macro error -- 'VBE6ext.OLB could not be loaded' 3) Excel error -- missing library. Each time the user launches Word, the installer dialog appears. Office works correctly for admins on the network. Office works correctly for users and admins when logged into machine locally. If the user logs into the domain as a user, these problems occur. Office has been installed and reinstalled. Is there a network policy causing this? If so, can you tell me how to fix this?     - Word causes system to reboot I'm working on a system that's rebooting itself. Windows XP Home. Runs fine until one opens a Word document from inside Word. Then, immdediate black screen and reboot. The system has been scanned for parasites using NAV, Ad-Aware SE Personal and Spybot Search & Destroy 1.4. Nothing is found. Microsoft Office was removed and re-installed. This seemed to work for a while until the problem reappeared. The hard drive passes the IBM/Hitachi tests. Automatic reboot is turned off.     - Word 2003 Delivery point bar on envelopes In using Word 2003 for MS Office 2003. Once the letter is completed I go to the mail & envelopes section to print an envlope to the letters addressee. I use the delivery point bar on my letters but this is apparently not finctioning as it repeats the same delivery bar code on different letters. I have had one letter returned with a correct address and wondered why it was returned. Upon making up another letter I noticed those bar codes are exactly the same for two different address'. Please take a close look at the bar codes and provide a fix for this issue so I may utilize the barcodes on the letters for speedy delivery.     - Equation Editor Tip causes Runtime Error Running MicroSoft Office Word 2003 SP2 with all office updates. I am running the Insert> Object> Create New tab> MicroSoft Equation 3.0 object type. As soon as this is selected, an Equation Editor Tip prompt appears. It reads, "MathType is a powerful upgrade to Equation Editor with many addition features. Do you want to find out more about MathType?" I toggle on "Don't show me this again" and select I either yes or no (the results are the same). I then receive a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library dialog that reads, "Runtime Error! Program: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information." When I select OK on this dialog, Word unloads. Does anyone have a solution for this.     - Can't Change File Name when saving across PTP network In office 03 when I save a document I want to provide the name. If across my PTP network I can only save using the default name from word. Same happens if I open an existing doc and try to save as. I can save as in a different folder. This does not happen if I save on my local machine.     - MS Office Document Designer can't locate word I recently purchased a fantastic book "Office Document Designer" which came with CD loaded with document designer tools. The installation setup looks for Word 10 or 11 or setup terminates. I have office 11 but setup only finds Power Point and Excel, not Word. I believe setup runs a script looking for Word.Application to return Office 10 of 11. I have run the script and receive the following error message: Could not create object named "Word.Application" Code 8007007E Source WScript.CreateObject. KB896564 lists the problem but the solution doesn't apply. My Network and computer security settings are not the problem and I have disabled AV program.     - Normal.dot File increases (VBA Code) Hi there, When Word 2003 starts some Add-Ins that I programmed add commands to the menubar and some custom toolbars are created. When Word ends I clean them up (deleted). In Word 2003 this can lead to a size increase in the normal.dot each time word start/quits... According to Microsoft KB: 873017 (Your Normal.dot file may increase in file size when you quit Word 2003 if a Word-specific add-in that contains a VBA macro is loaded when you start Word 2003) this is a known problem).     - Message: Saving the AutoRecovery File is postponed Using Word 2000 (9.0.6926 SP-3) I keep getting an information message saying "saving the autorecovery file is postponed for (name of the file) I press OK and the message goes away, this repeats over time and eventually the document crashes.     - Email Envelope Error I have what is apparently a commonly seen error message around here: "Word could not load the e-mail envelope. This could be caused by a network connection problem or a problem with your Office installation." The difference is I am using a new install of Office XP, so that both Word and Outlook are 2002 Sp3. (Sp3 came on the disks for the new install. I actually had a working version when I cloned my old computer for a new one, but bought the additional license to keep honest. Now I have lost functionality I depended upon. I have a feeling that the problem is related to some Registry setting. The solutions given for 2000 and 2003 versions do not work here.     - date format in mail merge We have upgraded from Word 2000 to Word 2002 SP3. My mail merge documents have a merge field of a specific date obtained from an Access MDB query - in W2000 this always printed out correctly. However, although the Language is set to English UK in Word 2002, the date always comes up in American format, i.e. 11/1/2005 instead of the English UK 1/11/2005. I can find no way of amending this and thus the mail merge is useless to me as I have to delete the merge field and type in the correct date format. Any help to correct this would be apreciated as I have several mail-merge documents affected by this glitch. Also, How do I get rid of the U.S English option in Setting language to use in the document? The Access database give the correct date format of medium date.     - cannot see all of embedded object when I insert an object in word (or powerpoint), not all of the embedded item can be seen - parts blocked out by white rectangles. If I click on the object to edit it though, all can be seen.     - Graphics Disappear Running Windows XP-PRO sp2 with MS Office 2003 sp2. When I hit Print Scrn and then go over to Word and paste, the graphic will appear sometimes and then sometimes it won't. If I click print preview the graphic appears and when I print, the graphic will print. If I scroll down the page to read something that I've written and scroll back up to view the graphic, the graphic won't refresh, half of it is missing. I have to click into print preview and then back out for the graphic to show up. If I scroll back down I loose it again. I have the following set in my options: 1. I am working in Print Layout (although it seems to fail in any layout I'm in). 2. In Tools/Options/View, "Drawings" is checked and "Picture placeholders" is not checked. 3.     - Slow loading templates list Word 2003, Windows 2000 Server, Windows XP / sp2 We have three users who share templates in Word. I moved the templates folder to a shared folder on the server so that everyone could create and share templates. This was working fine and dandy until we upgraded from Windows 2000 Pro (workstation) and Office XP. After upgrading the workstations to Windows XP (sp2) and Office 2003 the users have complained that their access to the templates folder is dismally slow. Indeed I checked this access and what use to be almost instantaneous now takes between a minute and a minute and a half!! The ONLY changes we made were upgrading the operating system on the client side and the version of office. That's it. Is there something new that MS Word is doing that takes so much longer to create a list of templates on the shared folder on the server? Is there possibly some setting in Windows XP that needs to be changed? Right now my only alternative is to copy all of their templates from the shared folder on the server BACK to their local PC's. This, of course, eliminates their ability to create and share files (not the desired effect). Can somebody share so light on htis?     - Microsoft Word Error Just today, when i am opening a word document on my C: (hard disk) drive, or from outlook as an attachment, my computer tries to open the document from my floppy disk drive and then displays the following error: "The currrent drive is not valid.     - Cannot create new data source file in mail merge Word 2003 Can anyone help? When using Word 2003 mailmerge the following error message appears "Cannot create new data source file. This file will be saved in the Temp folder on your hard disk. make sure you have a Temp folder on your hard disk If you do not have a Temp folder then create one." (The wording is translated from the Welsh interface so may not be word for word) This happens when navigating to Tools/mailmerge/ following mailmerge wizard through starting document to choose recipients \type a new list\ and then hitting Create button. I have a Temp directory in the default C:\windows\ directory. I have repaired the installation from the comtrol panel to no avail. When word opens, I get two error flags. First on states: This document could
not be registered. It will not be possible to create links from other
documents to this document. The second error flag states: This document
could not be registered. It will not be possible to create links from other
documents to this document. (C:\Program Files\...\Startup\Normal.dot)

I have re-registered the legal, genuine office 2002 package, detected and
repaired the Word application, and reinstalled MSI.

Can anyone help me with a solution? Ready to upgrade to Office Pro 2003 but
do not want to inherit this error.

This message has nothing to do with registering the program. It may have
something to do with file associations in the Registry (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm), but what it mostly
means is that you will not be able to use OLE links in the document. One
cause of this message (at startup) is the Blaster worm; see
http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp

Another possibility is the damaged Registry mentioned in "WD2002: Nothing
Happens When You Try to Drag Text or Copy and Paste Text" at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=291316
