I'm trying to format a heading using the Styles and Formatting dialogue.
When I select "modify", then Paragrah, the left indent box has no
value, the "special" box says "First line" and by is "56.29cm".

When I reveal formatting, it says:

Left: -57.79cm
First Line: 56.29cm
Right: 0cm

which is clearly dumb. There is also a tab set at -57.79cm that I can't
clear, no matter how hard I try. Whenever I try to change the paragraph
format to what I want, Word says:

"This measurement must be between 0 and 55.87cm"

I'm really frustrated, I didn't set the indent to that and whatever I
try I can't set it to anything else, my only option is to click cancel.

I've seen similar issues posted in this group going back a couple of
years, but no solution has been offered.

It sounds like a damaged template.

If this is in all documents based on Normal.dot (the template used when you ask
for a "new blank document"), then use the steps under "Creating a new Normal.dot
from scratch" at http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm.

If it's another template, you'll have to reconstruct it. Make a new blank
template. Select everything in the old template except the final paragraph mark
(if there is anything else), and paste it into the new template. Existing
documents can be purged of damage in the same way or by several other methods
(http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm).

Thanks Jay, your suggestions sound good.

I fixed it in the meantime by changing the gallery for the heading
style, I suspect it hasnt't fixed the underlying issue though - I'll
try your suggestions when it reappears.
