I had a word 2003 document emailed to me that will open fine in Word 2007 on
my dekstop, but on my Windows Mobile 6 device I get an error when Word Mobile
starts to open that says, "An error occured. The document could not be
opened." (Occurred is really misspelled in the error message as occured.).
Other documents open in Word Mobile, it just seem to be this one file. I have
Office Mobile 6.1 on the device. The same error happens on a Windows 5
device. Any idea what could cause this?

On the desktop, try using Open and Repair to see if it finds any problem
with the document. If it is still the same, save the document in RTF, close
it, then open it again and save it back as a doc file. Does it open now.

(This all presumes that you are saving it in Word .doc format and not Word
2007 .docx format.)

Thanks for the suggestions. Doing an Open and Repair did not find any
problems. Saving as an RTF then resaving as a DOC does allow the document to
be opened. What's strange is if in the orginal document I delete everything
and save as a DOC, I still get the error. Even though the document is
essentially blank. Is there any way to find out what could cause this? Is
there some metadata or something like that in the file that would cause this?

I am experiencing the same problem. I have tracked it down to being
an old word document version. (version 1.0 or 2.0). We have an older
report generator that creates reports that users running office 2003
sp3 or office 2007 can't open. These are the same files that my users
with windows mobile devices can't open as they receive the error in
the above post. There is a registry change that can be made to fix
office 2k3 sp3 and 2k7 but i haven't found a solution for the mobile
devices other than opening it on their PC, saving it as a .rtf and
then syncing it back to the device. If anyone has a better way i
would love to know what it is.

Going through RTF and back to DOC is essentially cleaning out some
corruption, but what exactly may be very difficult to diagnose. But usually
it is a third party add-in on the source computer that is the root of the
problem.
