Embedding Excel spreadsheet in Word: Office 2007 error

I need to EMBED, not link, an Excel spreadsheet in Word 2007. Running with
Office 2007. Installed SP1 for Office. I can embed the spreadsheet and save
the Word file (as 2007 format) but I can't edit the spreadsheet.

ERROR MESSAGE "The server application, source file, or item cannot be found.
Make sure the application is properly installed, and that it has not been
deleted, moved, renamed, or blocked by policy".

The spreadsheet is tiny - just 20 cells or so - with some checking and
totals. Any ideas? What's aggravating is that this USED to work a few months
ago. I tried creating a new Word file and I'm still having the same problem.

help me.

Mary,

I have similar problem as you do. I get

"The program used to create this object is Excel. That program is not
installed on your computer. To edit this object, you must install a program
that can open the object."

I am pulling my hair on this one. See my post "Can't Open Excel Embedded
Object"

bI managed to get a Microsoft tech on the phone after installing SP1 for
Office 2007 (it didn't help). It took a couple of phone calls and screen
sharing sessions, but he did fix it. We tracked the problem back to an Excel
add in for MS Reports. He used regedit to get at it and remove it.

Thanks Mary. I can't find MS Report in my add-in list. Do you remember if
it is shown in the Add-In list under Excel or I have to find it in RegEdit?

Hi Johnny,

I tried the documents you provided the links for and none of them had the problem. That would tend (as Mary mentioned) to point to
either an add-in (Excel or Word) or something in Vista (I checked on a machine with Windows XP).

If you start Excel before starting Word then start Word while holding down the control key do you still get the error with your
sample file?

It could be a setting that's for some reason trying to link an Excel12 document (use Alt+F9 in the Word document to view the
embedding code) object to an older (Excel8) version, for example.

Bob,

I tried the CTRL button, there is no error message when I open the Word
file. But, when I double-click the spreadsheet, it gave me the same message.

I do have 19 add-ins in Excel. Only 4 of them are active. The 4 active one
are
Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM Addin
Microsoft Office Live Add-in Beta
Microsoft.Education.Office.Addin.Connect
Send to Bluetooth.

I tried to disable them in teh COM Add-in dialog. When I tried to unchecked
the add-in, I got "The connected state of Office Add-ins registered in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE cannot be changed." I get the same message when I tried
to remove the add-in.

Any other suggestion?

Here's another example -

in Word 12 running under XP Pro:
there are no document realted add-ins
there are no disabled application add-ins
there are no active application add-ins
there are 22 inactive application add-ins
- all installed as part of Office Pro 12

In Excel:
there are no document realted add-ins
there are no disabled application add-ins
there is ONE active application add-in
-RemoveHiddenData (RHD.DLL)
there are 21 inactive application add-ins
- all ( including RHD.DLL) installed as part of Office Pro 12


Deleting the Data key in Word changes nothing.

Finally, although I have re-created the tempates from scratch on
occasion and the issue never goes away, this Word - Excel link is part
of my customer call summary / Invoice sheet, and I use these all day
long. Sometimes I will have multiple sheets open and one will have
the link to Excel die while another will continue to work fine.

My experience seems to be a total, but sometimes temporary loss of the
Word =96 Excel link. Temporary meaning that if I do NOTHING in the
document and just come back later, it will often work correctly
again. I wonder if there is a look-up or link refresh timeout that
could be adjusted so Word does not give up so quiclky and assume the
link is broken?

One clue might be a link breaking when the system goes into Standby or
Hibernation. If I just close my laptop to move to another desk and
reopen it a few minutes later, an embedded Excel sheet may now only be
an uneditable image, especially if the link had been active (i.e. - I
was editing in the spreadsheet window) when I shut the lid. I usually
get the =93there=92s no Excel on this system =93 message, but an Excel
spreadsheet in another window is often also open and still works
fine. This is all on a free-standing laptop not working with any
remote printers or files, and the default printer is NOT an HP.

In case it helps, I also recently received an Off-forum contact from
an individual who stated:

"While running Win XP with Office 2007, within Outlook, I can Insert >
Table > Excel Spreadsheet in emails, calendar appointments and journal
entries, but not tasks (even though I go through exactly the same
actions, and I do have Excel installed). "

I know this is not a forum for either Excel or Outlook, but if it
helps identify the source of the problem...

I disabled all Add-in but still have the same results. May that be some
