Within my organization it is necessary that normal.dot is
designated as read-only. We have an add-in template that
is configured to load when Word starts. With this add-in
template installed, Word presents the users with the
following message when they try to exit:

"Word cannot save changes to the global template because
it was opened with read-only access."

The user is then given the option to save normal.dot under
a different name. Is there a way to prevent that message
from appearing?

It just isn't possible to operate Word with a common read only normal.dot.
Everyone must have their own local normal.dot and it must be with full
access rights.

Tell us what you are trying to do and we may have a solution for you:
locking normal.dot is not an option.

Everyone has their own, local normal.dot. This dialog
only displays when it is designated as read-only with our
other template installed and configured to load when Word
is started.
I suppose it's somthing in our corporate template that's
trying to make changes to normal.dot.

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

I'm still a bit baffled as to why normal.dot is being locked as Read Only.
Are you saying that the 'other template' is being loaded which is locking
normal.dot on purpose? Is the 'other template' loaded automatically from the
Word Start-up folder when you launch Word?

There are dozens of reason why Word tries to save changes to normal.dot
(global template) when you close Word. This can be a custom macro, template
add-in, or COM add-in. If you start Word using the /a switch, does Word
still want to save changes to the normal.dot if you close it immediately?

To use the /a switch, type in winword /a in the Run dialog and press enter.

Hi Terry,

I interpreted the OP's description of the problem as they either have
Normal.dot in a read-only folder or they have changed the file
attribute to read-only. His corporate template is attempting to modify
Normal.dot which of course it can't be done due to the read-only
status.

I'd say your original advice was spot-on. Word doesn't operate 'as
designed' when Normal.dot is read-only. :-)

That was my first understanding - but the more I think about it the more

First, let me thank you both for your input.

Beth, you're exactly correct. Our normal.dot file is read-
only and our corporate template seems to be attempting to
modify normal.dot every time Word is closed.

Terry,
To answer your questions:
>> Are you saying that the 'other template' is being
loaded which is locking normal.dot on purpose?

Response: No

>>Is the 'other template' loaded automatically from the
Word Start-up folder when you launch Word?

Response: Yes

>>If you start Word using the /a switch, does Word still
want to save changes to the normal.dot if you close it
immediately?

Response: No

I apologize if the idea seems ridiculous... but we would
like to prevent users from altering normal.dot. Maybe you
could suggest another way to accomplish this?

Could I create a macro that answer's the dialog upon
attempting to close Word?

Thanks!

You're right - it is a little ridiculous. Well...not ridiculous ;-)
but unproductive.

If I was prevented from creating AutoText entries, rich text
AutoCorrect entries, macros, etc in order to get my work accomplished
more efficiently then I would *not* be a happy camper.

May I ask why you do not want users modify their Normal.dot? If we
knew more about the situation then the 'problem' could be resolved
using a different method. :-)

Quite aside from creating AutoText, AutoCorrect, and macros, if I were
prevented from customizing my environment by adding/removing toolbars,
selecting the default view, etc., I would be a *very* unhappy camper (and
then I'd learn how to do most of the above with a global add-in).

As Beth has said - perhaps 'unproductive' would have been a more appropriate
term to have used - but to Beth and me, because we know that it won't work,
ridiculous seemed appropriate!

We really need some more input as to what you are trying to achieve or stop
your users from doing when you lock normal.dot. We may be able to find a
more appropriate way of doing what you want.
