    - Opening word 95 documents in word 2000 I am having problems opening word 95 documents in word 2000. Whenever I open a document created in word 95 it hangs for about 5 mins and then opens. It opens all other documents exept to ones created in word 95. I have done all the usual things like delete temp files, ran defrag, scandisk, reinstalled office, installed service pack 2 and 3.     - Can not seem to find away to turn off email tool bar in some Word I have found two different client machines that have what would look like the email sendto, carbon copy, blind carbon copy and subject fill in boxes at the top of the Word application that I can not seem to find away to get rid of. I have right clicked on the blank area of the tool bar to see what tool bars are active but I find that the email tool bar is NOT active. I have also tried to go into the customizing of the app and still could not find a way to get rid of it for my clients. Both clients wanted to get rid of it because it takes up too much room at the top and wanted a bigger picture of the forms they were making or viewing. The first computer was on Windows 98SE and the other Windows XP Home edition.... Pretty bad when I can not find the solution.... help people????     - Word repaginates continuously Since late this afternoon, my Word software has developed a problem whereby it continually repaginates some of my documents (not all, just some). I have observed the problem in documents derived from three different template files (none of them Normal.dot), and the problem is in multiple documents, not just in one or two. In the documents that show the problem, if I switch to Normal View (I usually work in Page Layout View), the page number shows correctly initially, and then changes to say "Page 0 Sec 1 1/1", as if the document was on both page 0 and page 1 of 1. Other symptoms: - When I first load one of the offending documents, it initially shows I'm on page 1 of 2 (these are documents with multiple pages, mostly in the hundreds), and remains like that. - If I Page Down, the page count begins to go up, as if Word is repaginating - After a few seconds, the page counting re-starts - It then begins to repaginate rapidly, showing "Word is repaginating x.doc, page n. Press Esc to cancel." (I do not normally get this message while repagination is occurring). - The only template file that has changed today is Normal.dot. None of the other templates from which these documents are derived have changed recently (going by their Modified dates). I have tried: - Deleting Normal.dot and making Word re-create it - Restoring Normal.dot from a backup copy from yesterday evening (before the problem manifested itself) - Repairing my Office installation I have found articles about troubleshooting damaged Word documents, but I am not yet convinced that this is my problem, given all of the above (I hadn't even touched some of these files today until AFTER I first observed the problem). I have good anti-virus software (Command AntiVirus), and have scanned both my templates and the documents showing the error, and have found no infections (in any case, I am not in the habit of opening attachments in odd-looking emails). Can anyone suggest other possible causes of these symptoms? Is there any software I can use to verify corruption of a Word document? The procedures outlined in Article 826864 are a bit hit and miss, and that article doesn't even say what it means by instruction 1: "Look for similar behaviour in other documents". Okay, yes, I've looked and found it. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN??? Does it mean I DON'T have corruption or that I DO? I have not found similar behaviour in other software. Again, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN??? The article is a bit of a chocolate teapot in this respect. I also don't have an "Open and Repair" option on my Open dialog box, so the first suggested remedy doesn't even look possible.     - Saving existing document results in .tmp filename Hi, When an existing Word 2003 document is opened, editied and then the user clicks on "Save" Word will rename the file to one of those "wrlxxxx.tmp" filenames, and save it to a temp folder. I know Word does this in the background automatically, but it is getting hung up somewhere. The user has to remember to click on "Save As" and manually re-enter the proper file name each time.     - Word shuts down and gives error code when deleting in dual screen I am using a Compaq notebook and have the secondary monitor contected to form and extened screen. I open Ms Word 2003 and launch a document on both the extended monitor(2) and the laptop monitor(1). I then go and highlight the section I want to delete on the extended monitor(2) as soon as I highlight and hit delete the program freezes. I then receive an error message stating "Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for any inconvienience". It is at this point Word closes my documents and then restarts and shows them as being recovered. ****Attempted fixes****** (1)So far I have tried a seperate secondary monitor and it had the same error. (2)I have tried working without the seconday and I have no problems at all. (3)I have even tried to use another notebook a Fujitsu Lifebook and had the same problem on it as well.     - Word 2003 crashing some other W2K applications Hi, So I've just repaired my installation of WIN 2K, and reinstalled Office 2003 and done all of the windows updates that are available. Then run resistry firstaid to clean things up. Now when I open windows it keeps asking about a macro problem with pdfmaker.dot. So I disable the macros. Shouldn't Word be looking for the normal.dot file instead of this pdfmaker.dot?? So in trying to delete all normal.dot files so that word will create a new one when it opens I start My Computer. When I attempt to search for the normal.dot file... or anything at all I get an error: Office Pro comes up saying it needs to configure Office 2003 and it begins to configure something. Then I get a Program Error that tells me explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. And it creates an error log. My Computer then closes as do all of my applications running in the task bar in the lower right corner except for McAfee security center. Why is all of this happening?     - I get the message COM ERROR Command is not available because there is not an open document [...] Dear colleagues, Whenever I open a Word document by clicking on the filename I get this box: COM ERROR Command is not available because there is not an open document. CritiqueWordAddin:: Document change. With an OK button. The OK button doesn't work, I have to close the window on the status bar, and then the document opens normally.     - Blank Documents I have a user that seems to posses the unique skill of being able to erase documents just by opening them. Any one ever heard of anything like this? Got any suggestions?     - right indentation problem on program opening every time i start Word, the screen looks fine, but when i start typing the wording will not go to the right margin. it will always stop about 10 characters to the left of the margin and then go to the next line. nothing centres properly and if i were to justify everything to the right, the space would be greater than if it was justified on the left. i think it is a problem with the program, but if anyone has exoerienced this, please tell me how to fix it...     - paAttach error in Word My initial installation of Office 2003 was fine but then while setting up my signature in Outlook I ended up getting an error within Word. When I want to send or just open Outlook I get "paAttach is not a valid macro or command name" then I get "paInsert" and finally "paAbout" iwth the same warning. It will then finally open but sometimes I get a Normal document error. I have resintalled and tried to repair Word but dont' want to uninstall and resinstall all of Office.     - Saving Word file A user here is using Office XP. Saving a file from the Word program results in the saved document with a "generic" Windows icon. She can reopen the file but other user's can't. Using Explorer and viewing the file types, files with a .doc extension are associated with the "generic" Windows icon. Deleting this file extension and recreating it results in the "generic" icon being recreated for the .doc extension. How can I reassociate the .doc extension with the correct (Word) icon?     - picture - now you see it/now you don't I have a template which I copied over from Word97 to Word2002 which includes a picture. In Word97, I never had any problems - the picture always came up on the screen and always printed. However, in Word2002, sometimes the picture doesn't print and sometimes it doesn't appear on the screen except as a frame with a small box with a cross - if I right click inside the frame and chose edit picture, the picture appears.     - Word locks up when replying to Yahoo emails Hi all, Not sure if this is "off-topic." If so please let me know if there is a more appropriate group. We (my wife and I) are having a problem when replying to emails sent to us from anyone using Yahoo. We are using XP professional, Outlook 2000 with Word as our email editor. When we reply to an email, Outlook will hang. I can only get control back by ending the Word "process" under "task manager" even though there isn't a Word application running. I can "turn off" Word as the email editor and there is no problem.That is why I believe that there is something going on with Word...I may be wrong. Any help would be greatly apprecitated.     - The file *.doc is not available I recently started getting a message when attempting to open an existing word document. It says "the file "filename.doc" is not available. When I attempt to close the word application, I get the message: "changes have been made that affect the globaltemplate, Normal.doc. Do you want to save those changes?" I am able to create a new word document but then if I attempt to reopen it after it has been saved I get the "not available" message again. The same type of thing is happening when I attempt to open an excel document. I did a repair on the office 2000, but I still get these messages. Any ideas?     - compile error in hidden module: cannot fix Hi and thanks in advance. This morning when I started Word and Excell, I got the error: compile error in hidden module: AutoExec. I followed the recomendations from a web site that word help steered me to. I followed all the startup paths and renamed all the .dot files, it did not help. Next I Added the Com add ins to the menus and looked to see what was there, nothing was. I restarted word again and I still received the same error!     - Word is finishing analyzing your document We just got several new Dell computers with Word 2003. When opening some documents Word will pause for up to several minutes. At the bottom of the screen it reads "Word is finishing analyzing your document:" It gives you the option to press ESC, but it does not work. We are NOT using any document management software.     - Word not responding A have a recurring but seemingly unpredictable problem with word (2003). When I'm using word a lot, editing a number of files at once or editing a large file a lot, I find that my computer slows down, the amount of memory my computer is using goes up astronomically and finally word crashes to a halt and stops responding. For ever more, when I open these files up on my computer, these same files cause word to stop responding when they've been opened for a few minutes, irrespective of how many documents i have open at the time. Someone has suggested to me that my computer's RAM can't cope with all that I'm asking of it, but when I open the same files on a computer with significantly less RAM the problem isn't there.     - When I edit a doc, nothing happens til I click on the document!! H Have been using MS word for over ten years. Just got new computer running XP, and just bought, installed, and began using Office 2003/Word. When I first installed the program, on SOME documents, not all, when I would hightlight a word, then press delete, nothing would happen UNTIL I click somewhere, or hit any key. Then the word would be deleted. Also happens with control-Z, control-Y, control-X, or any same command from the edit menu. Tried every known option and preference and customization possible without change. Doesn't matter what view (print, normal, web) Finally I reinstalled the program, then it worked find. Copy a sentence, control-V would paste it immediately. Double click on a word, press delete (Backspace), the word was gone. All fine for a week and half. Today, the strange behavior is back. I want to SCREAM!!! Try making edits that don't happen until you click the document. It's VERY disconcerting. Could I have accidentally pressed a keyboard combination to effect this change?     - word 2002 hangs I have MS Works Suite 2003 with Word 2002. When I launch Word, the application hangs. The error message is: Hanging application WINWORD.EXE, version 10.0.4524.0 hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0 hang address 0x00000000. After sending report to Microsoft, I get a message that there is an upgrade that will cure this problem. I follow the link, then Microsoft cannot check my system because of missing patch files (.MSP). I tried to use the repair button in the Control Panel. Then I tried to uninstall Word with the intent of re-installing Word. Both methods were unsuccessful because of the missing patch files.     - Word 2000 Professional locks up loading Normal.dot All of the sudden, Word 2000 Pro (SP3) started locking up whenever we tried to open the program. I deleted Normal.dot, and tried to open the program so it would generate a clean template. It still failed. Outlook, Excel, and Powerpoint also failed to open. I then uninstalled Office 2000 Pro, and reinstalled (including all service packs). Outlook, Excel, and Powerpoint all function normally...and I was able to re-apply the customized templates in each. Word still fails. We can get Word to open using the WINWORD.EXE /a command option (opens without any templates and add-ins), but it continues to lock up if we try to open any files created with a template. Additionally, when opened with the /a option, Word will not save a new "normal.dot" template. I thought that forcing a clean template would solve the problem. There are no known viruses, worms, or trojans on the system. We're running Windows XP HE with SP2. Short of reformatting the drive and installing everything again...I'm wondering if something has corrupted in the registry. If so, is there an Office 2000 registry cleaner?     - Trouble Printing Documents. I have been frustrated recently by an occassional problem when trying to print Word documents. I know immediately that there is a problem when the printer icon on my toolbar fails to launch. System utilization goes to 100% and I must exit. I then have to reboot. Can anyone tell me what would cause a delay in the information being typed to
show up. We will type several words but they do not show on the screen for

Several possibilities:

1. Anti Virus (e.g. the office plug-in found in NAV)
2. Out-of-date or corrupt printer driver (check for newer driver then
delete the current printer and reinstall)
ditto graphics driver
3. Speech Recognition is enabled
4. Need to clear out all the abandoned temp files in the temp folder (see
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm )

the most likely is the graphics driver needs updating.
