Cross references deleted in printing

I have a legal document that has numbered sections. The section numbers are
used in creating cross references in the document. When the document is
printed, the cross references are deleted from the text. Why does this
happen and how can I prevent it from happening?

Tools, Options, Print, you probably have Update Fields checked.
What is more important is the fact that the cross-references are deleted, do
you mean you get the "Error reference cannot be found" error?
What happens if you select the whole document (Ctrl+A), then refresh with
F9? Do they disappear. If they do, then the cross-referencing process has not
be done correctly, hence the deletion upon printing.
If the references remain after the F9 process, and the Update fields is not
checked then the document is possibly corrupting.
Also, is Track Changes turned off? TC can affect the refresh of fields and
links.
Come back with you results.

DeanH - thanks for your reply. Update Fields is not checked in the print
options. I do not get the error message you asked about. Instead, the cross
reference just disappears. For example, if the document shows "Section 2.1",
it will print as "Section ", or in track changes mode as "Section 2.1" with
the number stricken through. I have also noticed that sometimes this error
will also display in the document itself, prior to printing. I tried
selecting the document and updating fields, and found that this would not
create the error. However, if the error is present and I update fields, the
error corrects itself in the document, so maybe that is the work around for
this error.

With TC on and the "number sticken through", that indicates that the number
has been deleted and will therefore not print.
I would suggest you step back into TC mode, accept or probably reject All
changes in the document (I say reject or else you will loss the cross
reference).
Once the Accept/Reject process is complete, then confirm that there are no
more chanegs in the whole document. Close Track Changes, now refresh the
whole document and hopefully your cross-references are back in line and will
print and work.
As stated before, Track Changes will interfere with fields and links,
closing the mode but leaving some changes not accepted/rejected does not
ensure the fields and links working as expected.
