For some reason, all of a sudden, when I highlight text in Word and press
the Backspace button on my keyboard (or simply begin typing over the
highlighted text to delete and replace it) the text does not disappear.
Instead the cursor simply moves to the beginning of the highlighted text.
Therefore, when I highlight text that I intend to delete or replace, I need
to press the Delete button first. Does anyone know why this occurred, and
what I can do to regain the normal functionality? I'm using Word 2002 with
all the latest updates on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1. This
problem does not exist in any other Office product (other than Outlook,
which is Word based). Thanks.

You may have enabled WordPerfect navigation keys. Tools > Options > General
: uncheck the two WP options.

Tools | Options | Edit: Check the box for "Typing replaces selection." Word
considers Backspace "typing."

Thank you for your responses. It was what Suzanne suggested. Who knows how
I ever turned that off.

Thanks again,
