The file format is the same for Word 97 - 2003. However Word 2003
opens files a little differently and we've had reports of similar
issues. But so far Word 2003 has been able to repair the errors
contained in the older document.
Try going to the File/Open dialog, selecting the document, and under
the Open drop down select "Open and Repair".
