    - worrd 2000 in Windows XP We're experiencing word 2000 crashes when we try save documents. Oddly, the save seems to happen, but can I tell you how disconcerting it is to have a save crash?     - Word deletes tmp file along with original file - everything gone! Word has deleted a document I've been working on all week. An error message popped up to the effect that there was a problem saving the temporary file - retry did nothing, cancel gave option to save as, which I did (whereupon Word crashed completely). Now, Word had already deleted the original file, and as it had a problem saving the temporary file that it would eventually rename as the original, both are gone. There are no .tmp files on my disk whatsoever - and no documents beginning with a tilda [~], or bearing a date stamp that would lead me to any version of the document. I had set up the various backup and autorecover options, but these are now unchecked, and there are no .bak files on disk either! The file location for autorecover is Application Data\Microsoft\Word - but I no longer appear to have an Application data directory at all. Haven't logged off or rebooted since the Word crash. The one thing that is on disk is a file called rescued document.txt - this is full of junk (almost entirely question-marks, with bits and pieces including the file path, the most recent few words, and what appear to be table of contents identifiers ).     - can't open documents after saving & closing them. I'm running Windows XP Professional with Office XP Professional. I can create documents fine in Word. But when I save them and close them, next time I want to get into the file, I get a message that "Word cannot open file doc5.doc", or whatever I've named the file. Also, when I close out of Word, I get a message saying that changes have been made in normal.dot, do I want to save changes? Whether I save changes or not, I have the same problem with the files not opening. I've reinstalled Office, and still get the same problem. Can anyone help me please? I'd greatly appreciate it.     - word xp error I have word xp, and every time I open the program I wait a few seconds then a dialogue box opens and says that an error has occured and word will close. Please send error report. I have sent the rror reports and downloaded the service paks, that they suggested. I even went as far as reinstalling the program, but now the box opens but when you go to send the report there is nothing wrong, it gives no option to go to the previous website where I got the downloads, it just says report completed.Please help, I am a student and have to fix this in order to complete my assignments.     - Can't find or open program I have word 8.0 on Windows ME. I connected a HP laserjet scanner. Since then I am unable to open word from the shortcut bar or even find it at all.     - Program Crash on start-up I am having a problem with Word 2000 crashing on a Windows 98 machine upon start up. All other Office 2000 products launch properly and work fine. Word, however, gives me the "imfamous" "This Program Has Performed An Illegal Function" message and then shuts down Word. I've re- installed both Office 2000 and Word itself and still I get nowhere.     - MICROSOFT WORD WONT START I get a message that says Microsoft word has encountered a problem and must shut down when I try to run word. I have Microsoft office 2000 running under XP. I deinstalled the software and reinstalled it and it still doesn't run. I had a catastrophic failer of my system disk and had to replace it and reinstall everything so the disk is fairly clean. Some people try to open Word docs and are prompted for password but can select "read-only" and open the doc. Others with same build select "read-only" and Word is open but no document opens.     - Backspace does not remove selected text When I select a block of text then press backspace, nothing happens. It should delete the text.     - didn't know where else to turn Sorry to be a bother but I didn't see a catagory that fit my problem. I have XP Home on a 1.4 Ghz EMachines (ok so I couldn't afford a real computer)....Each time I open Word my monitor goes black and when the program reappears the colors are washed out. If I click on display modes on the desktop it shows the computer has switched to 256 colors..If I change it back to true color the screen goes black again and then reappears correctly..I thought it may be a RAM problem so I upped to 256..The Word I am using came as part of Office suite 2002..Any ideas I am stumped.     - cannot open some .doc files I have installed Microsoft Word for Windows 95 version 7.0 in my computer.The OS is Windows 98. I am not able to open some Word documents especially those that are attchments to email.I know that they contain only text. I get a message in a Winword dialog box that says "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the program persists contact the program vendor". When I click "close", Word application shuts down. Sometimes while working on a document this dialog box appears when I click some button & the only option I have is to click "close" & then I lose all unsaved work.     - tilde in document name Don't know which category to place this so I placed it here... I have Docs Open and when I receive an attachment from someone in Lotus Notes, I open the attachment. The best practice is to save the document to DocsOpen at that point, however, if I save that word document using File/Save instead of using the proper method, I get a number with a tilde ~ in front of the number.     - The file (filename.doc) is not available error Hi there, Recently, I've been getting the error "The file (filename.doc) is not available" while trying to load .doc files which loaded fine before.. I'm currently using Office 2003 Beta 2 Technical Refresh. The problem started after I converted my drives into NTFS the other day, might that have caused this? If yes, how do I fix it? I've searched the internet for answers, and this newsgroup too, I read that renaming/deleting normal.dot and deleting registry keys would work but I tried it and it did not. I even used the Detect and Repair feature to delete all my customised settings but Office Word 2003 still gives me "The file (filename.doc) is not available" error. I did notice too, whenever I try and exit Word after failing to open the file with the "The file (filename.doc) is not available" error, I get the "The file normal.dot already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?" prompt. Clicking No, then cancel, then trying to exit again will prompt a "Changes have been made to affect the global template, Normal.dot. Do you want to save those changes?". Only with a No here that I am able to exit Word. Can anybody suggest a workaround and explain why the problem occurs?     - Insufficient Memory, Save the Document Office 97 (SR2) If I open Word, write a little text, open the print dialog and change the printer from the default, I get the following error: "There is insufficient memory. Save the document now." It doesn't seem to matter whether or not I have saved the file before I try to print. If I cancel the dialog and then try again, the error goes away.     - Application error when using Spanish spell check I am running Office 2000 pro. on Win2k Pro on 2 laptops. I have enabled Spanish in my language settings and have tried both detecting language automatically and doing it manually. It works better when the detect language automatically is enabled. One of 2 things happens: 1. Spanish is recognized and the mis-spelled words are underlined. When I right click the word or run spell check, Word crashes and disappears as if it had never been there. 2. I keep typing in Spanish and receive an application error - Dr. Watson log: The application,, generated an application error. The exception generated was c0000005 at address 0287DE59. I have sp3 installed on these laptops. I also have tried it on several pc's with the same specs, which work fine. If anyone can give me any suggestions, I would appreciate it very much. Thank you.     - Word Could not fire event After copying a user profile from one 2000 machine to another 2000 machine I get a message stating that the user has already opened that document and would they like to make a copy. After you click yes, you get the error message "word could not fire event". If you open any more files in word you get the error message but nothing about the file already being open. Also if I try to open a excel spreadsheet it says the document is already open and I will either have to rename the file or close the already open file.     - Word Document in WebBrowser I developed an Activex Control in Visual Basic 6.0. The activex contained a WebBrowser Control and an Internet Transfer Control . The activex is used to allow the internet users to browse the word documents. This activex is included inside an ASP page using OBJECT tag. The Internet Transfer Control will get the file from the server to the client machine. Then using the ‘WEBBROWSER.Navigate’ method, the document is opened inside the Web Browser Control. There is also a facility to move between documents without closing the Activex. When the page is taken in an XP machine with Office XP installed some error occurs. The document loads successfully in the ActiveX, for the first time. But when we try to open another document in the ActiveX window, the new requested document is not loading inside Web Browser Control and IE stops responding, even though the document is available at the client machine. Before loading the second document, we call the statement ‘Webbrowser.Navigate "about:blank"’, as per the instruction in the Microsoft site (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=243058). If we remove the statement ‘Webbrowser.Navigate "about:blank"’, everything work fine in this XP machine.     - List of Tables I have a document that has 10 tables; all table titles use captions. When I try to generate a List of Tables, only the first 4 tables are in the list. I thought the problem was related to the fact that Table 4 was inside a Text Box, but when I removed the text box, I still only could get the first 4 tables in the list of tables. The same document has an extensive TOC, which I have no trouble generating and regenerating, so the problem seems to be related to the list of tables function.     - Work shuts down A few days ago I started getting an error message after any print job in Word 2000.     - Error opening Web from within Word Whenever I try to open a web folder (http://www. [mysite].com) I get the error: Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close... This is the message I am getting whenever I attempt to open a word attachment from outlook 2000. The attachment opens fine under any other workstation I have forwarded it to. All machines are the same. (Same models/Imaged) Specifics: Win 2k machine w/sp3 Running MS Office sr-1 Things attempted: 1) Deleting the normal.dot file & letting word create a new one. 2) Switching default printers around. 3) No winfax pro installed on machine, heard this might conflict??? 4) Reinstalled Word & Office.     - Converting those box things to readable text I attempted to save a document to a floppy, got errors, and then my document was stuck as being mostly composed of that box jargon-gook that has the occasional strange character.     - Multiple documents opened in Word..... I have a couple of users that when they open multiple documents in Words 2002, some parts of one document overlap the second.     - "Find" MAXes CPU I have Windows 2000 Professional, MS Office 2000. I Word, sometimes when I type Ctrl. + F to find something in my document, it will max out my processor. This is very odd, because I have an Intel Xeon and opening Word only brings it to 18% CPU. The document is not huge; it varries from 15 to 30 pages.     - Word working with Groupwise I work for a school system that uses Groupwise as the email system. We also use wordperfect 9 and Word 2000 as wordprocessing software. In Wordperfect it is possible to type a document and directly email it through Groupwise. Myself and other coworkers have tried many different options to try and do the same with Word 2000. When I publish reports using the "Publish It with
