No real answer sorry - but I did have the same thing on my system, and
other circumstances meant I needed to reinstall from the start!
Windows, then all Apps...
it worked a treat! I never look forward to such a thing.. but when you
start getting the benefit from a fresh install - it makes it
worthwhile - just make sure you have all required stuff backed up,
email etc...
that might be an option if you feel like taking it.
then - once it's all installed and working like new ~ I'd really
suggest backup with Acronis or Ghost - so you can always restore to
that point in time - saving a full reinstall in future.

Are you using mapped drives? Removable media? Floppies? If explorer is
searching for any of those and they're not connected (but show), it
could be trying to connect.

I had two network drives mapped when I would VPN into a network and
realized that Explorer had slowed incredibly because it was attempting
to connect to the mapped drives but couldn't and it kept trying for WAY
too long before proceeding.

Are you using FAT32 or NTFS? Have you performed a complete disk check?

All drives are mapped and are accessible. We are on a network here at work.
I just replaced my harddrive with a new one. It is NTFS.

thanks

A new drive could be defective, so I would still run a complete disk
check. Have you replaced the network cable? Tried a different jack? If
you disconnect all mapped drives, does the issue happen on only the
local drive?
