Printers in Control Panel crashing My Computer
I have Windows XP Home Edition.
Lately, if I enter Printers and Other Hardware from the Control Panel, then
click either View Installed Printers or Printers and Faxes, it crashes
Windows Explorer and provides the following error message:
Windows has encountered an error and needs to close. Sorry for the
inconvenience.
If anyone can shed some light on why this is happening, much appreciated.

How much time do I have to install Windows XP Pro?
I built my own PC about two years ago, and at that time, also

Is there a deadline by which I have to install and activate Windows XP

Trouble Creating Slipstream Disc
I want to do a repair install on Windows XP, and I tried to create a

Windows won't maximize
Hi guys:
First post, and I hope I'm in the correct forum (couldn't find an "IE
forum"). If not, just let me know.
The only window that will max for me when I first open it is my IE ico
on the taskbar, which I set Run to 'maximized'.
However, when I click a link in, say, my favorites, or from the Deskto
or from the QL bar, the window opens half-size.
I've tried various approaches found in Google searches, such a
resizing the window, and clicking FILE > EXIT, while holding ctrl an
Alt, and Shift down, and all different variations of that, but there i
no correction.
I've also deleted the registry strings:
- HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\window_placement
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\internetexplorer\Desktop\Explorer\desktop\oldWorkAreas\OldWorkAreaRects
I CAN open a window, maximize it, and then open another link, and th
new link will appear in the SAME window maxed. I don't know how to se
IE to open in a new window, but that is another topic for another post.

Study sees Microsoft brand in sharp decline
MY COMMENT>
Of course I predicted all this the very moment I set my eyes on an early
beta of Vista. I knew this was very bad news for MS.
If vista was good, then it would have saved MS, but vista has been
Microsoft's worst product EVER (and Im not joking when I say that).
Companies don't go near it, any respected IT person would never tell a
business to install Vista...
Vista has been hated and kicked around all over the internet... the
blogosphere and videoshpere is full of vista jokes and bashes...
And now MS is without inspiration, windows7 seems too much like vista... and
that's a big problem.
They need some new brilliant minds and to open their ears to what people
really need, but is the time enough to change the course of things?

Microsoft's brand power has been in sharp decline over the past four years,
an indication the company is losing credibility and mindshare with U.S.
business users, according to a recent study by market research firm
CoreBrand.According to the CoreBrand Power 100 2007 study , which polled
about 12,000 U.S. business decision-makers, Microsoft dropped from number 12
in the ranking of the most powerful U.S. company brands in 2004 to number 59
last year. In 1996, the company ranked number 1 in brand power among 1,200
top companies in about 50 industries, said James Gregory, CEO of CoreBrand. Tag: unable to open a programe Tag: 1887483
Print photos using photo printing wizard
Have several photos, in several folders. Infact, ~ 2500 in 30 folders for
our local Historical Society.
We want to print out a thumbnail of each photo, burn them to CD/DVD for
storage.
We started out using PaintShop Pro but the problem is it doesn't label the
photos meaning we have to handwrite definition of each pics or capture
screen with list of pics. Either way not good.
It does give you 18 pics per page (3 across-6 down). This is a good size.
Here's where we're at this point using winxp photo printing wizard.
opened folder, selected 'print pictures' and wizard opens.
Following direction we get to point of selecting how many photos per page.
Of the several selections only 2 are close to what we would like. One being
'Wallet Prints' which give you 9 pics per page or 'Contact Sheets' which
gives you 35 per sheet. One is too large, (9) wasted space and the other
(35) to small to really see pics.
What we'd like is something in between these, say 18-24 per page.
Are the print selections mentioned above(not PSP) a template? If they are,
is there a way to change one of them to increase or decrease the number of
pics per page? Or create a custom print selection.
any suggestion please,

Odd Windows Explorer behavior
I have a user experiencing a very strange problem with Explorer
which started out of the blue a few weeks ago. He has a relatively new
HP XW4400 workstation running XP Pro SP2. The issue is intermittent
and only occurs on one folder which is on a mapped network drive. The
user has folder view open so he can see the folder tree on the left.
When he clicks on any subfolder within this folder, the
contents of the selected folder appear in the main frame and the
correct path appear in the address bar. The weird bit happens in the
folder tree, which jumps to the folder above and tries to find the
subfolder inside that folder and then brings up an error similar to 'K:
\Engineering\Folder_Above_The_One_I_Was_In\Subfolder_I_Clicked_On
refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on...'. The
error is correct, the folder isn't there because it's not looking in
the place I clicked.
This issue does not occur on any other computer in the building
and there is nothing different about either of these folders. I
haven't checked to see if this happens for other users logged on to
the computer or for the same user logged on to other computers, but I
will check it out when I get the chance. It's not user error and
nothing has changed on his system (according to the user and my
inventory reports).
Anybody have an idea? I appreciate any suggestions you've got. Tag: unable to open a programe Tag: 1887463
Windows XP USB Drive Letter Assignment Problem
I've been browsing for a fix, and yet to find one. Hopefully someone here can
help.
Our enterprise is running Win Xp Sp2 and users do not have permissions to
diskmngt. We're running MS and Novell network shares. When the user plugs
their usb drive in, Windows automatically assigns it the first available
drive letter, which in this case is a network share.
I've tried putting in trash binary data for \dosdevices\drive: under
mounteddevices, but Win just overwrites it. I cannot force windows to use
select approved drive letters. So then I thought I would script something
using subst or mountvol, but WMI will not report the removalable media,
instead it sees it as a network drive.
Then I tried to use mountvol drive: /l to return the volume info, but once
again, it doesn't work for network shares. Mountvol /l works, but not
specifying the drive letter to search.
Basically I need a free solution to fix this. I'm out of options looking for
help.
Summary:
Novell mapped drive F:
Plug usb drive in, assigns drive letter F:
USB does not show up for user
User cannot change letter because they don't have rights
WMI doesn't see removalable media correctly if it's already reporting as a
network share
Mountvol F: /l doesn't work because F: isn't a physical drive
Subst doesn't work because it just remaps the share, not the USB device Tag: unable to open a programe Tag: 1887441

What is Windows registry (Registry Keys)
Find this tutorial and more on http://thedotnetsource.blogspot.com
Reason of this project:
I wrote this tutorial in order to help the hundred of programers
searching on the web for Windows registry.
This is an like introduction, if you are seeking how to use and deploy
the registry keys with Vb.net, just see the next tutorial (It'll be
tutorial 6).
In this tutorial I'll show what is the windows registry system and why
use it.
Project details:
1- What is Windows registry and why use it
2- How to read, write and change the registry
3- HIVES and their use
4- Definition of registry values
1- What is Windows registry and why use it.
You can compare the Windows registry to a database. It stores
informations related to Windows and other installed application on
your system, but also Hardware.
Think now if someone need to change the computer name via programming.
How can he do this?
Programmers can think of files (text files) to store the computer and
windows information. But when file get big and heavy, Database will be
more secure. And then they had (Windows builder) the choice of a
database "Windows Registry".
Microsoft Dot Net Frame 1.1 and higher have implemented a great
solution for registry on their classes. This will replace the hard
work and long lines of code that programmers have to write if they are
using Visual Studio 6.0 for example.
2- How to read, write and change the registry
Windows has a wonderful tool on it, named "Registry Editor". But you
won't find it, unless you open the System32 folder on the Windows
folder.
But we can easily run it through the execute command it the start
menu. Just type "regedit" (without quotes).
Now the registry editor will open.
Please before doing any changes on your registry make a backup.
To do a windows registry backup: File > Export > Give a name for the
file and select the All option box.
The backup may block your pc from working for a short period of time.
You'll see that there are 5 folder. Those are the main folder (named
hives) and you can't add another main folder.
Now you can select any folder and right click on it, then add a new
sub-folder or value.
By selecting any folder and right clicking, you'll find a list of
action that you can do.
If the action is blended (made not selectable), then either it's
impossible or you don't have the rights to do this action.
You need administrator rights to change registry keys.
3- HIVES (main registry folders) and their use
The registry is split into a number of logical sections named "hives",
those are the top main folder that can added, edited or renamed.
They all start with "HKEY" prefix.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
Stores information about registered applications, such as Associations
from File Extensions and OLE Object Class ID's tying them to the
applications used to handle these items.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Stores settings that are specific to the currently logged-in user. The
HKCU key is a link to the subkey of HKEY_USERS that corresponds to the
user; the same information is reflected in both locations. On Windows-
NT based systems, each users' settings are stored in their own files
called NTUSER.DAT and USRCLASS.DAT inside their own documents and
settings subfolder.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Abbreviated HKLM, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE stores settings that are general
to all users on the computer. On NT-based versions of Windows, HKLM
contains four subkeys, SAM, SECURITY, SOFTWARE and SYSTEM, that are
found within their respective files located in the %SystemRoot%
\System32\Config folder. A fifth subkey, HARDWARE, is volatile and is
created dynamically, and as such is not stored in a file. Information
about system hardware drivers and services are located under the
SYSTEM subkey, whilst the SOFTWARE subkey contains software and
windows settings.
HKEY_USERS
Contains subkeys corresponding to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER keys for each
user registered on the machine.
HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG
Contains information gathered at runtime; information stored in this
key is not permanently stored on disk, but rather regenerated at boot
time.
4- Definition of registry values
Binary Value
REG_BINARY
Raw binary data. Most hardware component information is stored as
binary data and is displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal
format.
DWORD Value
REG_DWORD
Data represented by a number that is 4 bytes long (a 32-bit integer).
Many parameters for device drivers and services are this type and are
displayed in Registry Editor in binary, hexadecimal, or decimal
format. Related values are DWORD_LITTLE_ENDIAN (least significant byte
is at the lowest address) and REG_DWORD_BIG_ENDIAN (least significant
byte is at the highest address).
Expandable String Value
REG_EXPAND_SZ
A variable-length data string. This data type includes variables that
are resolved when a program or service uses the data.
Multi-String Value
REG_MULTI_SZ
A multiple string. Values that contain lists or multiple values in a
form that people can read are generally this type. Entries are
separated by spaces, commas, or other marks.
String Value
REG_SZ
A fixed-length text string.
Binary Value
REG_RESOURCE_LIST
A series of nested arrays that is designed to store a resource list
that is used by a hardware device driver or one of the physical
devices it controls. This data is detected and written in the
\ResourceMap tree by the system and is displayed in Registry Editor in
hexadecimal format as a Binary Value.
Binary Value
REG_RESOURCE_REQUIREMENTS_LIST
A series of nested arrays that is designed to store a device driver's
list of possible hardware resources the driver or one of the physical
devices it controls can use. The system writes a subset of this list
in the \ResourceMap tree. This data is detected by the system and is
displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal format as a Binary Value.
Binary Value
REG_FULL_RESOURCE_DESCRIPTOR
A series of nested arrays that is designed to store a resource list
that is used by a physical hardware device. This data is detected and
written in the \HardwareDescription tree by the system and is
displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal format as a Binary Value.
None
REG_NONE
Data without any particular type. This data is written to the registry
by the system or applications and is displayed in Registry Editor in
hexadecimal format as a Binary Value
Link
REG_LINK
A Unicode string naming a symbolic link.
QWORD Value
REG_QWORD
Data represented by a number that is a 64-bit integer. This data is
displayed in Registry Editor as a Binary Value and was introduced in
Windows 2000.

How safe is my BIOS Power-on Password?
Hi -
A short while ago I learnt that if I transfer my data from an NTFS to a
FAT32 harddrive I lose all my security features on the files.
Since I use a BIOS power-on password to protect the data on my laptop I
am now wondering if there is any point to doing so at all. Could an
unauthorised person not simply access my PC with a bootable Linux CD
such as Knoppix and copy all of my files over to a FAT32 external
drive?
Or will BIOS be smart enough and prevent the evil-doer from doing this?
If yes, how? If no, is there anything else I can do to be safe against
data theft in case of laptop theft?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

Tell XP to use the wifi card NOT the lan card?

pinging an ip, I can see that it's trying to use my router for DNS,
which of course fails. When I unplug my PC from the router, I can get
on the web, because it uses my wifi card since there's no router.
How do I tell windows "Use the wifi card for the web, please, not the
rj45 port, even when I'm connected to a router." ?
I have Winxp sp2. Thanks. Tag: unable to open a programe Tag: 1887347

I need an option on which is the best Windows ZP home mode to run Ad-Aware and SpyBot full scan in
safe mode, safe mode without network, or normal mode. Any information would be useful.

Can I build a stand-alone system?
I want to set up a system that will never be on-line and would like some
advice on how to do this.
The advantages that I think apply are:
1. No malware will ever infect the system
2. I will not need a firewall, any internet-security software or
anti-virus software, meaning that few resident security routines, loaded
at start-up, will be required leading to greater system performance.
3. I will not need to continually install security updates to system and
application software, again resulting in better performance as well as
easier set-up
4. I will not be tempted to load on the latest level of software
'enhancements', most of which are really not useful additions to
software which is already seriously over-bloated to start with (for
example, I doubt whether there are many things in PS CS3 which were not
in PS 6.5 and which are critical to my work). This will mean I spend far
less time maintaining my system, learning new software and battling with
system instabilities.
5. I don't need to move inexorably to newer hardware every 12 months, as
I have been doing for the past 10 years. Ms Word and/or competitive
equivalents ran with acceptable performance and acceptable function 15
years ago on my 120 Mhz, 32 Mb RAM Pentium system.
But there are problems I can foresee:
A. Windows XP will not work without an on-line activation (I suppose I
could revert to Win 2K - that was equally stable, but some of my
software is XP (and later) only). Some apps. are moving (or have moved)
to a similar requirement.
B. I fear some, as yet unspecified, problems with web-browsers (which
are required accessing html help files for example).
C. Some major apps. (like those in MS Office) require on-line
connectivity to provide help support.
D. There is the obvious problem of getting data into and out of this
system. Yes, I could use R/W CD media (a throw back to the old pre-LAN
days of 'sneaker-ware') - but it's not really attractive. IF I have any
LAN connectivity, there is always the risk that malware will migrate
across the LAN - isn't there?
E. I can't do LAN printing or back up data to my in-house 'server'.
I'm sure there must be a smart way of meeting my objectives. Can
somebody point me in the right direction?
Thanks. Tag: unable to open a programe Tag: 1887330
Can Not Display Control Panel Properly
I have recently re-installed Windows XP. Now, when I select Start - >
Control Panel the panel is not displayed. Instead, The Control Panel folder
appears. Also, should an item labelled something like Settings be displayed ?
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

File Types not showing proper icon for html / htm
Running Window XP MCE SP2
HTML and HTM are configured to show Firefox icon for all modes, edit /
print / open
I've even hit advanced and checked to make sure the icon is set right.
Yet in windows explorer I still don't get the icon. I get a generic
window looking icon. Not the fireball.
I googled and found reference to shelliconcache errors, but can't find
the file and the help is old like this is a win98 issue.
Tried Tweak UI -> repair.
Changed the icons to IE then back to firefox and still no good. Tag: unable to open a programe Tag: 1887309
Re: "Convert" NTFS to FAT32 after Saving HDD Contents
Hi,
I do have a very good reason for doing this, in order to access the HDD
contents without launching WinXP, using a bootable CD rom (created using a
bootable floppy disk on a Windows 98 computer).
Why would I want to access the HDD without Windows "running"? For
matters of security (out of "reach" of all types of spyware) in order to view
(and/or edit) sensitive personal information that is scrambled/encrypted. The
program I use will not run unless in real Dos mode. A NTFS HDD is not
accessible after booting via bootable CD rom.
However, you may know something that I don't know regarding access to the
NTFS HDD without WinXP "running"?

Send Fax Wizard no longer able to queue multiple recipients
I used to be able to queue an arbitrary number of fax recipients with the
Send Fax Wizard. Now it still lets me make a long list of recipients, but
no more than one or two recipients actually appear in the fax queue.
Sometime I get the following application event error entry (but most of the
time none):

(The Help and Support Center offers no help, by the way.)
The net effect seems to be that I can submit a fax to one or two recipient
destinations at a time, but the rest if there are more do not show up in the
fax queue.
I have removed and re-installed the XP fax service; I have deleted and
re-created the fax printer and queue; I have re-installed the modem.
Everything was working fine on this system with no changes and then this
happened.
My guess is that on this multi-core system there is some sort of
synchronization failure with a long list of recipients. Even so, it used to
work on this system.

Notice that they acknowledge the bugs, that the vista fanboys claim didn't
exist? LOL idiots...
lets hope this one will be better than the extremely bad designed and
implemented CRAP search of vista

Registry data shared between partitions.
Hi,
I copied mu OS XP to a new primary partition. Now I have 2 primary
partition with the same XP installation. I did all that through
PartitionMagic 8.0. From the new partition I tried to uninstall
Office2003 and... almost magically I unistalled it also in the old
partition!!! It is as the registry shares data among partition
(primary, only 1 per time is visible and active). How does it could be
possible? Is there a way to hide totally this registry information
among partition?
