    - I/O Device Error I have a Toshiba L-35, and when I try and download HP software I get an error message "The request cannot be performed becuase of an I/O device error". I can download any other companies software beside HP. There is a Microsoft article 891894 that describes the problem, but the solution does not solve my problem.     - getting a new valid key for xp pro I bought a computer a couple of months ago. It came with XP pro installed, but no CD or key was given to me. It worked fine, I got no errors with activation, or windows genuine or anything like that. However, the harddrive died, and I needed to install windows again on a new harddrive. I borrowed a friends cd, it installed, but failed WGA. I don't mind buying a new license and key, but I was wondering: I can get a discount through Microsoft employee purchase program (EPP). Can I use that key (even though the page for puchasing XP pro on EPP says 'version upgrade') to change my incorrect key on the computer and validate windows? If this statement appears alone in a .bat file it causes hibernation rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Hibernate SetSuspendState takes 3 parameters.     - winlogon.exe crashes on logging off or shutting down I've had an ongoing problem for about 7 months. My system is a high end system running XP Pro, which I built 2 years ago. It runs flawlessly, but when shutting down, since the fall of 2007, winlogon.exe crashes. It also crashes if I just log off, and don't shutdown. In Safe Mode, it never crashes during shutdown or logging off. Periodically, after taking some specific action such as uninstalling a piece of software or hardware, or running RegCure, the shutdowns may become normal. And that may last for 1 hour, 1 day or up to 3 weeks. But then things return to crashing. When the system is running, it runs very smoothly, with no problems visible of any kind. I have played around with most of the non Microsoft items in the Startup listing (I use WinPatrol), but that has not really uncovered anything. I've scanned the sytem with a wide range of security software scanners - but nothing has ever been discovered. I have a HiJackThis log just in case. but I cannot locate a good place to post it, and actually have it read. I have looked in the event viewer, but have not spotted anything that seems to be a cause for this. Does anyone have any ideas that I could follow up on.     - powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0 caused hibernation rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0 causes my system to hibernate. If the first parameter is False it is suppose to cause the system to suspend (sleep) Maybe 0 is not the same a False? Do you know what is going on?     - can't drag and drop to open files I've been searching around and can't seem to find the help I need specific to this. I am unable to drag a txt file onto a notepad shortcut icon on my desktop and have it open the application with that txt file open. all xp let's me do is drag the txt file and relocate it on my desktop. However I can drag that file to a shortcut that points to a folder and have the file move there. Can anyone point me in the right direction to fix this?     - chkdsk then asking for boot disk??? I revceived a kernel page error and then some other error that said to send report to microsoft. So I did and then they came back and said to run a chkdsk. I used the guided help and checked to fix errors. This chkdsk process took a long time fixing bad sectors in files. I ended up just going to bed while it was still running. Went down this AM before work and now it is asking for a boot disk. Do I just put in the cd that came with the computer? Do I bypass this somehow? Any help is greatly appreciated.     - XP Updates I have XP SP2 and have done updates to Dec 2007. I just went to XP update page, it checked for validation, (I passed), I clicked custom install button, and then says "Checking for updates" (and a green bar goes around and around) for 20 minutes and nothing ever comes up for updates. I have tried Express button too, samething, "Checking for updates" and nothing pops up for updates. Windows server problem?     - Navigating between applications Hi, My ability to navigate between applications has changed and I have been unable to find out how to fix my trouble. In the past, I could click on an icon on the bottom of my window and navigate to that application. For instance, if I had several email messages open in Outlook, I could click on the Outlook icon on the bottom of my screen, a list of the email messages would appear and then by selecting one of those messages, I would immediately navigate to that message. Now when I attempt to do the same thing, nothing occurs and the general Outlook icon on the bottom ofthe screen remains highlighted. This occurs with all open applications.     - Windows Security Update I have XP Professional with SP1 and was able with LeechFTP to upload and publish my web pages to my hosting company no problem. Then inexplicably this all changed on the 15th of February and I have since been unable to update my Customer web pages with either LeechFTP, Filezilla or CoreFTP. After investigation it appears I have received three security updates on the date everything stopped working. (I was getting a socket error) When I removed the SECURITY UPDATES (KB 944533 & 943055 & 946026) I still was unable to upload my web pages. But low and behold if I drop my firewall everything is now working. In terms of a security update this is a bit of a disaster and the changes in my firewall appear irreparable.     - Sudden problem with 3D preview of screensavers and now games do not run on pc? help Hello group, I sure hope someone here can help me, for some unknown reason in the last couple of days, my pc will not allow my son to play any one his games, ie, Thrillville of the Rails, Tornado Alley, MS Flight Simulator, also none of the 3D microsoft screen savers are working. I have not downloaded anything, nor do I have a virus. I did a restore to an earlier time which is a real pain, because I have to un-install Norton to be able to do this, but everything was ok again, but then again this am we are right back where we started.     - Favourites in Windows Explorer - IE and Windows I find it irritating that the Favourites in Windows Explorer also include my Internet Explorer Favourites - I do a lot of jumping between files and directories and want to find them easily, without having to look at a mass of irrelevant links. I mean, I can't see the point of having Internet favourites in with Windows directory favourites. It's extremely rare that I would need to jump directly from a directory to an internet link. Either I'm doing one type of work or the other - internet or file sorting. I checked the "Folder Options" in windows Explorer and there doesn't appear to be any option relevant to this.     - Cursor Movement Not Smooth I am working on WinXP Pro (SP2) with 160GB HDD, 512MB RAM & P4 2.8GHz. Today while working, suddenly there was a long system beep (it's the same beep sound that can be heard when the computer is started but the RAM chip is not properly fitted in its slot). WinXP didn't generate any error but since then I find that whenever I start WinXP, as soon as the desktop comes, my computer generates a long beep. Also when I use the keyboard Left/Right arrow & Up/Down arrow keys to scroll horizontally & vertically respectively in any text editing software (like NotePad, MS-Word etc.), the cursor movement isn't smooth. If you navigate to Tools-->Internet Options in IE & then go to the Advanced tab, one of the checkboxes say "Use smooth scrolling". If this checkbox is unchecked & you use the keyboard Up/Down arrow keys to scroll a web page by keeping the key pressed continuously (i.e. not release the press in between), the scrolling won't be smooth i.e. the scrolling would seem to stop for a nano-second & then continue. This is how the cursor moves in text editing softwares now. In other words, the horizontal & vertical scrolling using the keyboard Left/ Right arrow & Up/Down arrow keys respectively isn't smooth in text editing softwares. I find this very irritating & annoying. This wasn't the case earlier when the cursor used to move smoothly while using the keyboard Left/Right arrow & Up/Down arrow keys. What could be the problem? Please note that neither did I install/uninstall any hardware (from WinXP Control Panel or motherboard) nor did I install/uninstall any software.     - windows explorer slow Each time i try to change diredtories to anywhere in the file system on this computer it takes a very long time for it to change and show me whats in the directory.     - variation of same .net theme I've read multiple posts but since my issue is slightly different, I'm afraid to assume their fixes will work... It took me an entire day to fix the problem that created this mess!!! Something got corrupted and so I one by one replaced all the .net framework builds going through microsoft update. HOWEVER I missed 1.1 service pack 1 so I have: 1.1 2.0 2.0 SP1 3.0 I am continuing to get a message that I have an update to install (1.1 SP1); however, every time the install fails. I've tried uninstalling from 3.0 backward but I get the following error message when trying to uninstall 3.0: "Setup has detected that a newer verion of the application is already installed on this computer. If this application is encountering problems, use Add or Remove Programs to repair or uninstall the application." I get this message when trying to uninstall from Add/Remove programs!     - Need help with script solution Anyone know of a program that is small that i can use to deploy to my customers workstations and do maintenance cleaning of there pc. For instance when i connect to a customers computer remotely i will run a few programs for defraging, registry cleaning, and disk cleanup. Im looking for a simple program that has all these features that is small in size and that i can run automatically at certain times. Or another solution would be to find out a way to run a script on the users computer when it boots up to run these programs from like a batch file.     - Installed PRO: Stretched images, Wifi gone. Card slot not working I had to replace a hard drive in my Dell E1505. Installed PRO. Several issues: 1. My cursor moves to random areas while typing every couple seconds... usually somewhere earlier in the current sentence Im typing. (It will take forever to type this cuz it moves so often.) 2. Only given 2 options for screen resolution. (800 x 600 and 1024 x 768). I used to have 3 options. Everything including desktop and all web browsers are "stretched" and looks horrible. Pictures are distorted and wide. Text is blurry, etc. 3. My card slot where I put my camera card in doesn't work. 4. Wifi cannot be turned on 5. Device Manager has several yellow exclamation points under "Other devices" which drivers will not update. (Base system devices, ethernet and network controllers, PCI device etc.) I downloaded Dell drivers but not sure how many dozens of drivers or which ones Im supposed to do. Looks like I got all the ones I supposedly need. Other issues as well, but you get the idea. ANY responses greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.     - Bluetooth mouse no longer pairing I purchased a new Bluetooth mouse for use w/ my laptop. It was working initially. However, since updating the Bluetooth stack in order to use my Bluetooth headset, I have been unable to re-pair the mouse w/ my laptop. I do not believe that the problem is w/ the software; the headset works as expected, and I was able to verify that a different (borrowed) mouse paired w/ no problems. I am unable to use System Restore to return to my previous configuration, as company policy mandates that this feature be disabled on all systems. When trying to pair the mouse, the system is able to recognize the mouse and will prompt for the passkey (PIN). However, after entering the passkey supplied, I receive the error message: â??Detection of service failedâ??. I am wondering if the mouse is possibly still paired to the previous Bluetooth stack, and will not release that pairing. I have looked for some sort of reset button, but have been unable to locate one.     - Two PCs Started "Freezing Up" I've got two PCs side-by-side and sometime in the last month or so they've both started acting goofy. The main symptom seems tb that they cannot be shut down. Ctl-Alt-Del will not bring up TaskMan, and some applications cannot be close. Windows pops the "Not Responding..." dialog, but telling it to close the app now doesn't do anything. In the end, both PCs have to have the AC power cord pulled for a cold start. When the first one started this, I re-imaged it with a known good system. No luck. I had been thinking that there was some hardware problem on the first PC to start acting up... but the second one started and I had to wonder. Windows auto-updates are tuned on for both PCs. For some unknow reason VPN has disappeared completely and she is unable to create a new connection. The behavior seems to be linked to moving their accounts from the administrators group locally into the power users group via domain users. Not everyone is affected.     - Stand by/Sleep mode My recently built desktop computer will not go into standby/sleep mode. It progresses through the screen saver part, but instead of shutting down it pops back to the active desktop mode and remains there indefinitely. This is a new computer I built a short time back, using a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L motherboard with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. It has two 1 GB DDR2 memory sticks and is running Windows XP Pro SP 2. In general this computer works very well, but I can not get it to go into sleep mode. It has a 500 GB Western Digital hard drive and is no where near the point of being short of disk space or memory. I have opened Display Properties > Screen Saver Tab and set the Screen Saver to; Wait 10 minutes. I have set the Power Options to; Turn off monitor; After 15 minutes, and; Turn off hard drives; After 20 minutes. It seems to be going through this proces and the time intervals seem right but when it gets to the point where it should shut down or go into sleep mode it pops back to the regular desktop view and is fully alive, indefinitely. Try using the Add/Remove Programs feature of CCLEANER.

Aso suggest you use device manager where you can remove drivers. To get to
device manager: Win+R || type DevMgmt.msc in the box labeled "Open" || OK
button.
