continous restart
Hello:
I've a serious problem with my computer:
After installing winXP, I can do just one or two, sometimes three restart,
then during restarting, the system re-boot then I get a blue screen with
this message:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.
if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your
computer, if this screen appears again, follow these steps:
check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified
in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for
driver updates. Try changing video adapters.
Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory
options such as caching or shadowing, If you need to use safe Mode to
remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select
Advanced startup options, and then select safe Mode.

Again I reinstall winxp, I use always "hibernate" to shut down, but
sometimes, some software require restarting during install.
Can someone help me?
Thank you

External Disk Devices Rename Themselves
Several problems. When my system hybernates or when i restart/shut down my
system, some of my external disk get new device addresses, e.g., J, K, L,
etc. what i generally do is go to My Computer-->(right click) Manage-->Disk
Management--> to the specific drive and then i attempt to change the drive
letter. In order to change the letter, i have to "remove" a drive to free up
the letter. but i get a message that the drive is busy--EVEN THOUGH NO
APPLICATIONS ARE RUNNING. how do i find the process that is causing me to
get the device busy indication? also, is there a way that i can keep the
external drives tied to a specific address even after a restart, sleep mode
or shut down? how can i stop the "drive letter musical chairs?" Tag: pj_barbano2008@yahoo.com Tag: 1860914

Activate Windows on OLD computer, already activated on NEW compute
I recently purchased a new windows xp home edition computer which I am in the
process of transferring data from my OLD xp home edition computer. In
reviewing what is on my old computer, I noticed that the "activate Windows"
option was there ( start, all programs, accessories, system tools, activate
Windows), whereas my NEW computer does not show this option at all.
What is going on here? Is it possible that on my 6 yr old computer windows
was never activated? And somehow it is already activated on my NEW computer?
This of course begs the question "what would happen If I "click" on
"activate windows"?". Does it matter after 6 years?
What about the new computer. How can I check to find out if it is
activated? Is it possible that builder of new computer (Tigerdirect)
activated Windows?
Finally, shouldn't activation info be related to me , the owner of computer?
I find it odd that my old computer (Home shopping network purchased in 2001,
only user) appears to have windows not activated, whereas my new computer
appears to already have windows activated.
I appreciate guidance regarding this somewhat confusing info. Thanks in
advance for all help given, THANKS!! Tag: pj_barbano2008@yahoo.com Tag: 1860894
Indexing Service
Hi
I am using PerfectDisc 8 to defrag my drives and have had no problems
getting a complete defrag until recently.
I am now regularly getting a fragmented metadata file called
C:\$Extend\$UsnJrnl:$J which I understand relates to the file Indexing System.
Having searched this forum and gleaned some information relating to this, I
have disabled the Indexing Service, unchecked the box in C: Properties so as
to disable file indexing and deleted the file (fsutil.exe usn deletejournal
/D C:) - doing this seemed to get rid of the offending C:\$Extend\$UsnJrnl:$J
file. However, after a re-boot, it reappears.
When I run chkdsk c: /f the result shows the usual data plus an entry
"CHKDSK is verifying the journal.....Usn Journal verification complete".
My Laptop, set up the same as my PC, running the same OS (Windows XP Home)
and most of the software on my PC, does not have this problem.
Can anyone tell me why my PC has the file C:\$Extend\$UsnJrnl:$J file and
not my Laptop, whether it is indeed related to the Indexing Service, why it
keeps reappearing and whether I can get rid of it once and for all.

Browse Large Folder Like Vista
Hi! I have a large folder with over 1,000 folder inside and I would
like to know if there is a way to browse a large folder like you do in
Vista. For example in Vista if I'm browsing a large folder and I hit
back the selection remains on the same folder it was, if I was
browsing the folder 500 of a list of 1,000 and I it back the screen
returns to the same selection. This behavior does not happen in
Windows XP, if I hit back the screen returns to the very first folder
on the list.
Any guess?
Thanks!

Remote Storage Service wont start
I posted an issue yesterday with Backup not starting.
Now I believe the underlying problem to be the Remote Storage Service,
which won't start.
It was set to Automatic but started and stopped immediately. I set it
to Manual (like another machine here) but it still won't start.
I compared the dlls between the two machines and they appear the same.
I believe there is a database (of devices?), which may be the problem.
In Control Panel * Admin * Computer Management, I can't open the tree
Removeable Storage under Storage. It just hangs.
My next thought is to try to fix that. Any ideas?
BTW, do removeable USB devices cause these problems?

not able to reboot
Our desktop Windows XP (Media Center Edition) PC started making an unusual
clicking sound, as if
some network traffic was attempting to access the hard drive. I tried
clicking out of programs that were up at the time, but the mouse arrow had
turned into a cursor bar and wasn't clickable. So I turned off the PC by
holding down the power button.
Upon turning the PC back on, I was led to the black screen that gives
options of restarting normally, in last configuration or in various types of
Safe Modes. None of these options worked. Trying to deploy each simply led to
the Windows XP screen with the bar that shows the program loading, then
another blue screen, then black with the flashing cursor in the upper left.
That led to the black screen with the various startup options again.
Any clues as to what might be going on?

Help! Windows XP won't Shutdown
Hi everyone..
I just bought a new system last week and got windows xp home sp2 installed
on it. At first, everything seems to be ok.. then, a few days later, after
hours of usage, i found my system refuses to shutdown.. it doesn't stall,i
can still do things normally.. but it won't shutdown, restart, or logoff at
all.. when i pressed ctrl+alt+del combination, the task manager window didn"t
pop-up.. after typing "task manager" in help and support window, i found a
way to bring up the task manager window.. in the processes tab, it shows that
"winlogon.exe" are using more than 50% of the cpu resource.. could this be
the problem? or is it something else? it doesn't happen all the time, but
this is the third time i experience this problem.. can somebody help me with
these?
thanx before,
kind regards..

Pop-up vs. virus
Hi, I recently started getting frequent and familiar pop-ups along with new
windows being opened to dating sites, chatrooms, and this particular search
FindStuff.com page. To make a long story short, I've revamped my online
security with IEsp2 and downloaded the AVG anti-spyware, anti-virus,
anti-root and ran them all and I am pretty sure deleated like 4viruses,
50something spyware but the anti-root came back clean. However, I still have
a problem somewhere because after I rebooted and logged back in, it wasn't
long til I was at another search FindStuff page. Which is apparently not a
known phlishing or whatever site and I really dont know what else to do.
Maybe reboot in safe mode and re-run the scanners? If so, I'm not sure how
to reboot in safe mode. Thanks for any help-oh I'm on Windows XP, thanks. Tag: pj_barbano2008@yahoo.com Tag: 1860779

New to XP!
Hi,
Recently, I graduated to Windows XP from Windows 98 SE. While I really like
98 and have been a loyal Win98 user for many years, I must admit I am very
much enjoying my new Windows eXPerience! I do, however have a few
questions...
First, how can I enable viewing my media files (both music and video) in the
webview pane (in Windows explorer, the left portion of the the screen). I
did this all the time with Windows 98 and I really liked it. It allowed me
to play the music or video file without opening the Windows Media Player main
window. Can this even be done with Windows XP?
Secondly, I'm looking for good power toys for Windows XP SP2. I can't seem
to get TweakUI for Windows XP (I think it's just for SP1). Any good
suggestions? Freebees a must!
Lastly, where can I get free themes and styles for Windows XP? I've seen
some very nice ones which enhance the appearance of XP. But they require me
to apply a patched uxtheme.dll file to my system. How safe is that? Is
there a great safe and free site for adding XP themes and styles?
Thanks in advance!

My Computer - Files Stored on this Computer
On my admin accounts, I have all user accounts' folders displayed at the top

I want to restrict which user accounts have their folders displayed like

Also, on normal user accounts, I am only getting Shared Documents. I want

So, two problems: Admin accounts have ALL accounts, and I only really want

Currently running a windows 2003 environment with windows xp SP2 clients. We

WinXP sp2 - Framework
I just installed Turbo Tax Deluxe (+ State) 2007 on my desktop (WinXP sp2)

No longer able create shortcuts in XP desktop or startmenu
With MSWinXP2, prior could do a Start->Open AllUsers->File->New->/Shortcut to
add new shortcuts for all users as the administrator. Now, everything is
greyed out except CLOSE and the FILE option does not even appear. On the
desktop, the Right-Click brings up a menu in which there is no longer the
option to create shortcuts. I have been looking on the Net and all knowledge
bases for over 6 hours to no avail. Best I can figure, there is some security
feature "bit" that was set to prevent users in public environments from
changing the Start Menu program selections. The best I can figure is it has
to do with the Group Policies in the System.Adm arena. I executed gpedit.msc
and was not able to find the hidden "bit" to reset. I AM able to cut and
paste links (shortcuts - .lnk) amoung the AllUsers Start Menu selections, to
edit them (make them for other programs the manual way), and even to manually
create the links. I found a reference to a broken registry entry at the
HCR\.lnk\ShellNew\Command with a value of rundll32.exe AppWiz.Cpl,NewLinkHere
%1. It was there and others removing the rundll32 portion get a message of
"Windows can not create a shortcut here". This tells me the entry is good;
only, I am unable to execute it. The menu handler is simply not allowing me
access to the menu selection to "execute" this registry entry. Mine is a
single user system with my user having full Administrator privileges and even
logged in as Administrator I have lost this privilege. I can see it of value
like at a library where the administrator does not want the public changing
the start menus. I need to back this block OUT. Another user referenced that
the c:\documents and settings\{user}\desktop\desktop.ini file was missing and
recreating it fixed things. I did find it missing from both my area and
Administrator's, but, copying it from the default user did not cause a return
of the "Create Shortcuts" privilege. Too much has transpired for me to reset
the clock via a System Restore point. A friend suggested I add that upon
executing a "Start->Run->regsvr32 /i shell32.dll" I got the message
"DllRegisterServer and DllInstall in shell32.dll succeeded". Still no
shortcut creation capabilities. Further research shows the shortcut
generation is activated via an "execute(missing how)
c:\windows\system32\shell32.dll -21786 (example parameter here is the link to
subroutine found in the desktop.ini in each user's startmenu directory)"
command. Again, it appears there is a Group Policy security bit set that
tells the menu display program to not show "File->New". Great to prevent the
public in say a library from changing the start menu selections; but, I need
to find out how that is done and undo it as it appears that is what I in my
single user XP system inadvertently set. Tag: pj_barbano2008@yahoo.com Tag: 1860661

opening to notification area?
Hi folks,
I have an XP user who uses VNC for monitoring stations in my call center. It
is configured the same as my other supervisor workstations, but when opening
the VNC viewer the program's icon appears in the bottom right notification
area. Every other supervisor desk opens the viewer on the desktop to use it.
I need this to happen because of the security policy that all these stations
sit under. Does anyone know if there is a way to change a setting that allows
new programs to open to the desktop instead of the notification area
requiring a click to then have it appear on the desktop? Thanks a bunch!

Backup Won't start, Nero issue?
When I try to start XP Backup from the Programs menu it tries to start
but fails with no message.
I suspect the Removable Storage Service. There are Information items in
the Event viewer that it is Stopped, which is strange in that these
follow a message that it will be started. Also, I can't open the tree
to it in ControlPanel * Admin * ComputerManagement * Storage *
removeable storage.
Not long ago I added a Sony DVD writer with Nero 7 software. Could that
have disabled XP's Backup?

Why doesn't video file get laid down starting at the end of the last
After defragging a drive with PerfectDisk8, using the aggressive
setting, I captured a lengthy DV video file. However, after analyzing
the disk, the file shows to have been laid down in several chunks
instead of one contiguous chunk. Why is that?
Thanks for all input. Tag: pj_barbano2008@yahoo.com Tag: 1860633
how do I get xp pro media with sp2 integrated?
we only have the original action pack CD. We started the process of
replacing our PCs with new Core 2 Duo based. I found out XP pro original
action pack install CD does not install on that .
Go exception about video card . we tried with the built-in for the Intel
PR31 on board as well as the PCI express EVGA GF8500. no luck.
I heard Sp2 integrated Cd will install on a similar core 2 duo PC. However,
Microsoft Action pack people told me, XP pro is not a supported product and
I can't get replacement media through them.
is there any contact/department that I can get the media and use our
exiting product key?
or can we order a volume licence media from distributor and use our product
key? of course we still keep the total number down to below the max.

Add Program to Startup Group...Systray Only
Hello...
How can I set up a program (in this case, Microsoft Outlook) to open
automatically at startup; & have it minimized to the System Tray only? (as
opposed to minimized on the Start Bar).
Thanks,

Network Adapter Problem
My network adapter has disappeared from my computer. I recently opened my
computer to see how I to add a second hard drive. When I closed it back up
again and turned it back on, my internet connection was not working. I went
to the network connections folder, and my local area network connection was
not there (I have Comcast cable internet). I checked the device manager, but
my network adapter was not listed there. Does anyone know what might have
happened? My connection was working last night, Tag: pj_barbano2008@yahoo.com Tag: 1860619
