    - No longer able create shortcuts in XP desktop or startmenu With MSWinXP2, prior could do a Start->Open AllUsers->File->New->/Shortcut to add new shortcuts for all users as the administrator. Now, everything is greyed out except CLOSE and the FILE option does not even appear. On the desktop, the Right-Click brings up a menu in which there is no longer the option to create shortcuts. I have been looking on the Net and all knowledge bases for over 6 hours to no avail. Best I can figure, there is some security feature "bit" that was set to prevent users in public environments from changing the Start Menu program selections. The best I can figure is it has to do with the Group Policies in the System.Adm arena. I executed gpedit.msc and was not able to find the hidden "bit" to reset. I AM able to cut and paste links (shortcuts - .lnk) amoung the AllUsers Start Menu selections, to edit them (make them for other programs the manual way), and even to manually create the links. I found a reference to a broken registry entry at the HCR\.lnk\ShellNew\Command with a value of rundll32.exe AppWiz.Cpl,NewLinkHere %1. It was there and others removing the rundll32 portion get a message of "Windows can not create a shortcut here". This tells me the entry is good; only, I am unable to execute it. The menu handler is simply not allowing me access to the menu selection to "execute" this registry entry. Mine is a single user system with my user having full Administrator privileges and even logged in as Administrator I have lost this privilege. I can see it of value like at a library where the administrator does not want the public changing the start menus. I need to back this block OUT. Another user referenced that the c:\documents and settings\{user}\desktop\desktop.ini file was missing and recreating it fixed things. I did find it missing from both my area and Administrator's, but, copying it from the default user did not cause a return of the "Create Shortcuts" privilege. Too much has transpired for me to reset the clock via a System Restore point. A friend suggested I add that upon executing a "Start->Run->regsvr32 /i shell32.dll" I got the message "DllRegisterServer and DllInstall in shell32.dll succeeded". Still no shortcut creation capabilities. Further research shows the shortcut generation is activated via an "execute(missing how) c:\windows\system32\shell32.dll -21786 (example parameter here is the link to subroutine found in the desktop.ini in each user's startmenu directory)" command. Again, it appears there is a Group Policy security bit set that tells the menu display program to not show "File->New". Great to prevent the public in say a library from changing the start menu selections; but, I need to find out how that is done and undo it as it appears that is what I in my single user XP system inadvertently set.     - Partitions query Hi all Upon defragging I have noticed approx, ffifteen, separate, unmoveable green files. I originally started out with one. I suspect I have unknowingly created multi partitions, (I think). Is there a way to return to original 1 green file without using a third party application, and attempt a Clean/repair install instead? Also I stupidly have not backed anything up.     - USB Not Recognized on Zire 71? When I try to Hot Sync my Zire 71 Plam Pilot I get the yellow box reading " USB Device Not Recognized one of the USB deviced attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.     - opening to notification area? Hi folks, I have an XP user who uses VNC for monitoring stations in my call center. It is configured the same as my other supervisor workstations, but when opening the VNC viewer the program's icon appears in the bottom right notification area. Every other supervisor desk opens the viewer on the desktop to use it. I need this to happen because of the security policy that all these stations sit under. Does anyone know if there is a way to change a setting that allows new programs to open to the desktop instead of the notification area requiring a click to then have it appear on the desktop?     - Backup Won't start, Nero issue? When I try to start XP Backup from the Programs menu it tries to start but fails with no message. I suspect the Removable Storage Service. There are Information items in the Event viewer that it is Stopped, which is strange in that these follow a message that it will be started.     - Why doesn't video file get laid down starting at the end of the last After defragging a drive with PerfectDisk8, using the aggressive setting, I captured a lengthy DV video file.     - how do I get xp pro media with sp2 integrated? we only have the original action pack CD. We started the process of replacing our PCs with new Core 2 Duo based. I found out XP pro original action pack install CD does not install on that . Go exception about video card . we tried with the built-in for the Intel PR31 on board as well as the PCI express EVGA GF8500. no luck. I heard Sp2 integrated Cd will install on a similar core 2 duo PC. However, Microsoft Action pack people told me, XP pro is not a supported product and I can't get replacement media through them. is there any contact/department that I can get the media and use our exiting product key? or can we order a volume licence media from distributor and use our product key? of course we still keep the total number down to below the max. licensed PC.     - Network Adapter Problem My network adapter has disappeared from my computer. I recently opened my computer to see how I to add a second hard drive. When I closed it back up again and turned it back on, my internet connection was not working. I went to the network connections folder, and my local area network connection was not there (I have Comcast cable internet).     - Windows Explorer Crashing on Right-Click within Start Bar Hi Folks - I have just recently noticed that Windows Explorer has begun crashing out when I right-click in the Start Bar. I am getting the "Windows Explorer has experienced an error and must shut down" message.     - Booting Vista on Different PC Computers I install Vista Ultimate on one PC. It is an HP Pavilion a1700n. I remove the 40 GB IDE HD from the HP PC and put it into a Compaq EVO 510 PC. Result: Vista does not boot. I have researched the subject but still have not found a solution. The microsoft vista deployment step by step seems awfully complex. Has anyone found a simple way to solve this problem? I have also tried the reverse (from compaq to HP PC): Same result! With XP I could boot into safe mode or just boot normally and XP would detect and install the new hardware it finds. Somtimes I would need to install XP from CD on the target PC to copy the boot.ini and hall.dll files to a usb flash drive. Then I would restore the image of XP on the target PC. I would boot into recovery console and copy the files form the flash drive to the target PC (boot.ini to C:\ and hal.dll to C:\windows\system32). Most times I could then boot the target PC normally or in safe mode. However, with Vista I am stymied! Any practical solution?     - RAID1 question XP-Pro OS -- am upgrading my Motherboard to one that has hardware RAID Asus P5LD2 -- so was thinking about setting up a RAID1 mirror disk situation -- to be protected in case of disk crash.     - Slow Computer Response: I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP, SP2 with AVG, A-Squared, Spybot and Comodo with DSL connection. I haven't done anything or added anything but today when I logged on the computer it was unusually slow even with only (1) program running. I thought perhaps I might have picked up a virus or malware so I ran Spybot and it came out clean. I then checked Microsoft Updates to see if any new updates were there but it just seemed to hang up and did nothing although the Task Manager said it was running. I then started to run AVG and checked to see if were any updates but it failed each time I tried to update it. I thought maybe they have a newer version so I deleted it from my Add/Remove program but then I couldn't download it from the site! The pages took forever and I kept getting errors on each page which took forever to load. I realized I was making things worst so I did a System Restore but when it came back up it gave me a message that the AVG Kernal could not run although it shows AVG in the Add/Remove programs as well as the desktop shortcut. Great, so now what am I suppose to do? The computer still runs as slow as a snail and I can't update AVG or even re-install it it seems. I'm now running A-Squared which I should have done in the first place. I would appreciate any help or suggstions to return my computer back to normal.     - Welcome Screen Pictures Won't Change The Welcome Screen Pictures (Icons) are all set to Chess for every user. When I go into User Accounts in the Control Panel. I can change them there to whatever I want and they change within the control panel and also change at the top of the start menu. However, they do NOT change on the Welcome Screen and all stay as "chess". I have tried creating new users and they same issue occurs with them. They become "chess" on the Welcome Screen but are whatever else I chose within the user. So, it appears as though a registry setting or file(s) have been deleted, modified or changed.     - Do you understand .exe file format? I have down loaded two versions of tidy.exe (they are from different sites) One is about 300K and the other is about 100K long. The program has the option of asking for the version. They each reply the same version! I looked with notebook and each start out with about 10 lines of gibberish. Then the smaller one has about 10 blank lines followed by many gibberish lines. The larger one has about 30 blank lines followed by many gibberish lines. They appear to run the same.     - System 'Freeze' Problem I have Windows XP Pro installed. For no apparent reason my system keeps on 'freezing' (?). I consequently have to re-boot manually in order to unblock it. Lately, this has been happening rather often and it's getting rather uncomfortable to work with. I've checked program and system events and there aren't any apparent errors. I've also run my anti-virus (Norton) and all sorts of 'spybot' detecting programs, but have not found any problems. My 2 separate hard disks seem to be operating correctly and have run on both a checkdisk and defrag without getting important feedbacks. Is there anything else I can do ?     - Opening My Computer Slow I have one computer/user at an account that has an issue with MyComputer opening VERY slow. It is as though it is looking for something on the network and having no luck finding it. However, there are no apparent mapped drives that can not be resolved or other such things.     - Machine slows to crawl, no other program running Hello, I ran sypbot and ad aware and have Sophos antivirus running all the time. Something has been boggin my system down later, so I have to wait for every little task. I have a Dell D800 laptop with 2 gigs of ram. When no progrms are running, in the performance dialoge, the pages/sec is completely maxed out TEh cpu is running about 70% and the average cue length is about 60 percent. I have 14 items in my system tray, sophos anti virus, spybot, smart sync for backups, hotsync for palm, hot folders, which gives recent folders, ad aware service, the rest are sound, disconnect device, windows stuff. 49 processes are running. SavService a sophos part is using significant parts of cpu, 40, 50, .... But I need it. If I restart the computer runs great. Is my computer hijacked? Is something running I can't find?     - Boot as 2nd drive = boots OK: as only drive it fails. Neighbor had pc not booting. I have same model so put his drive in my PC to save his pictures/music etc in case needed to reinstall XP. When I put the drive in my Pc, ( cable select - his was second connection on primary IDE cable) I booted my drive and it announced - "need to scan secondary drive - was shutdown improperly" , so I let it scan/fix his drive and I could see his files in XP - copied to CD - all set. Rebooted and ON MY PC I have had 2 boot options on MY primary drive, ( I often have several drives in there) so I elected to now boot his ( as secondary drive). His drive booted up - looked good. I bought back to his house ( thinking I was done) and it hangs (his only disk drive). It STARTS to boot and looks good .... just before it would be at the user profile screen ( 2 users) it hangs at a "XP Home Edition" screen. I removed what I could from his box in case something hanging it, but same thing, so I brought it back to my house. Put back in as secondary drive - booted it -- OK. HOWEVER, if I make it the ONLY drive in my PC ( as with his) using primary IDE cable - master connector , it hangs on my PC too - same spot. I then had it as ONLY drive on my pc - using primary IDE cable - slave connector - same thing. so , ( FINALLY !) to my question: What is different OS-wise when it is hooked up as the secondary drive ? What is happening JUST before the user names appear on-screen. Also .. more info ... in no case on either Pc using either connector can I get Safe Mode ( or any other F8 option) to work when I boot that drive.IT will let me SELECT any of the F8 options ( Command Prompt, Safe Mode , debugging etc), but it does the same things onscreen, hangs at same spot. I expected it to get me to a C:\ prompt - WHY is it getting me to the XP user profile screen ??? AND when after hanging I do a hard power-off, it never notices that I powered it off. I EXPECTED it to announce- shutdown improperly - need to scan disk - it doesn't. Back in as second drive ( with another XP drive as primary) and still works fine. Hello All, When ever I switch on or reboot my DELL D620 laptop, I see a windows XP Prof blue screen with message "Please Wait" and white dots progressing for few minutes and then it automatically proceed to login screen.     - Software installation troubleshooting issue Attempting to install Microsoft Accounting Express 2008. Download proceeded without incident. Installation proceed for a few minutes only to generate the message: Setup failed to install MOA2008.     - svchost problems I have been having problem with my system where it would run fine for a while than seem to freeze. I was able to find out that in the task manager sorted by CPU that svchost.exe would be at the top of list using about 6 megs of memory. I found that if I ended that process the system would work fine. I finally felt that Norton Virus program might be the problem (no way to tell what was using the svchost.exe process) and uninstalled both the Virus and Live Update programs. Now the system works fine and svchost.exe is not there. So I assume that this was the problem. I have had problems with Norton causing problems with other machines at work so I will not be using this program again. I think I will probably be using either Trendview or McAfee - not sure which yet. My question is whether there is a better way to find out what program an svchost.exe is connected to? I'm not a Vista fan, and plan to buy an Eee soon, so I'm wondering whether the new Eee will have XP on it (I actually read abt it recently on this site... i think its techqi.blogspot.com) but people have already hacked Vista on to Eee (just Google for it, I forgot... sry).     - Logical Disk Manager (LDM) is not registered I cannot access the Disk Manager and get the following error message: "Logical Disk Manager (LDM) is not registered. LDM supports Windows 2000 or later. Check the operating system version on the computer named ..." As I am using Windows XP professional with all the service packs and critical updates that are current, this error message is a mystery, particularly since I have previously been able to use the Disk Manager. under Control Panel, Phone and Modem I tried to add a modem. When click Next
I got the Standard Modem Types under Manufacturer, on the right under Models
I have:

Communications cable between two computers
Parallel cable between two computers

It should list other models such as

Standard 33600 bps Modem
Standard 56000 bps Modem

I need 33.6. How to add those models back?

Somebody remove the mdmgen.inf file from C:\windows\inf folder?
