My Private Folder Not Accessible "Access Denied"
I have been using the "My Private Folder" application since it was
released by Microsoft in 2006. I know MS pulled it soon after, and I
know it is not supported. However, I kept using it for my own personal
use.
Everything was going fine until yesterday, when I suddenly received
the error message "C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\My Private Folder
is not accessible. Access is denied" everytime I tried to open My
Private Folder. I've uninstalled and re-installed the program, but it
still keeps happening. I've also tried the suggestions in KB 308421
[http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421] with no luck.
Does anyone know why this suddenly happened? And what I can do to fix
it? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you. Tag: If you looking for computer hardware...low cost computers... Tag: 1902617

freezing devices
I've read through the posts and don't find one like my problem. Gateway
pentium 4, 1 meg ram, All current Microsoft updates to XP Pro and XP Office.
No software or hardware addtions, norton internet security, full scan
indicated no gremlins. The computer has been running great for a year or so.
Two weeks ago my USB scanner would not initialize. Shut it off and
rebooted. Turned the scanner back on, no problem. Thought nothing of it
until it happened again. Went through the same routine and solved the
problem.
Two nights ago, I went to the PC to find mouse and keyboard non funtioning.
Mouse is USB, Keyboard is PS2. Red power light on optical mouse but no
movement.
Attempted task manager but with no keyboard, no joy. Hard restart,
everything fine. This morning, USB printer failed. Restart, everything is
fine.
This seems like the start of something big. I was considering a clean
reinstall of XP but wanted to get expert opinions first. I thought about the
USB hub but the keyboard isn't on it. Computer has USB 1.0 original and USB
2.0 aftermarket however, its been running great for a year or so in this
configuration. It is on a home network.
As always, any help / suggestions would be appreciated. Tag: If you looking for computer hardware...low cost computers... Tag: 1902610

SP3 and Compaq XP MCE Killed normal booting
Well, applied XP3 and my XP would not boot. What a pita. Turns out to be

Windows Update SP3 -- blind install ? ? ?
Hi,
Prior to MS releasing SP3, I had all updates thru and or including SP2, for
Windows XP Home Edition, with the exception of IE7, OE7, MP11 and all of the
Malicious Tools - all of which I disabled and remain in the online "hidden
updates" folder.
I want to initiate the SP3 update, however the specific updates are all
hidden so I cannot determine which updates are necessary versus which
updates MS may try to install that I previously disabled to the online
"hidden updates" folder.
In short, I am concerned that MS will install IE7, OE7, MP11 and all of the
Malicious Tools - programs that have absolutely ZERO INTEREST to me at this
time.
Does anyone know how to get around this "blind" install of SP3?
Thanks,

DVD-RW shows up as CD Drive in Windows Explorer (WinXp)
Hey Gang,
Long time reader, first time poster....
I normally would consider myself relatively computer saavy, however, I've
got a problem that I haven't been able to fix... even after a complete and
destructive WinXp Re-install.
I have 2 DVD Burners, one an external DVD burner and the other is a brand
new Sony DRU-190A that are both showing up as CD Drives in Windows Explorer.
However, with Nero, they show up as DVD Burners/Drives.
I am running Win Xp Media Center 2005 with a new, clean install. I need to
fix this because I use the Media Center software to record shows during the
week for work and from what I've been able to read, only Media Center can
burn the recorded shows off of media center.
Is there some way of getting these 2 drives to recognize correctly? I've
already uninstalled the drives from the Device Manager and they still didn't
come back correctly.

wireless networking
I recently upgraded my old 802.11b Intel wireless gateway router to a new
Linksys WRT 54GS router and wireless adapters. My P4 desktop, which for
years worked well with the Intel wireless gateway adapter and router, does
not work. In fact, I have two XP computers in the same room with the same
wireless adapter; one works (an older P3 that previously was not wireless),
one doesn't. The P4 wireless PCI card is functioning and accesses the
network, but will not access the internet. It appears that the computer
cannot access the modem's IP address as the IP address and subnet mask keep
coming up zeros. I am certain there is a problem in the XP wireless
configuration, possibly triggered by the previous wireless system; since the
other computer in the same room with the same OS and PCI card works fine.
The Linksys tech support was no help. Please help before I have to reinstall

Text to speech (TTS) in Outlook and Word
Hi,
I am looking for a text to speech (TTS) tool that will allow me to use
Word 2007 and Outlook 2007 to proofread text. In my ideal world, I
would like to see a toolbar in my Word 2007 document that highlights
each word as it is being read. Once I notice a typo, I stop the
program, correct the typo and then click the start from cursor
button.
NextUp's TextAloud has great voices but it does not seem to integrate
well with the two products mentioned. For example, in Outlook the
TextAloud toolbar is not in the window in which you type the email but
in the window in which you read mail. Once I notice a mistake, I stop
the reader, open the edit window correct the typo, save the draft and
then recommence the reader until another typo.
With Word, I open the document (doc extension) in TextAloud's
interface and made the corrections as desribed above. My only problem
is how do I reflect the changes back into the original document Word
2007.
The solution to print a copy of the unproofed text, scribble down the
corrections and then reenter the text manually is an environment
unfriendly, paper wasting and inefficient solution.
I would really appreciate to learn how others may use this technology
effectively or of any products that can do what I am suggesting.
Thank you

remote printers inaccessible after xp sp3 from windows update - id
Installed SP3 from windows update. Applications cannot print. Opened
"Printers and Faxes". Dialog tries to connect to remote printers, then shows
status as "unable to connect". Request properties for a printer and you are
notified that the printer spooler is not running. But that service is on
automatic and is already started. (Stopping and restarting it make no
difference.)

Holy BLOAT!
I was wondering why my new Vista system would only hold eight restore
points. I recently used up that space very quickly when I installed a
bunch of my old programs that I used in XP.
Turns out that my Vista restore points are about TWO GIGS EACH,
compared to 200mb each in my old XP system.
By default, Vista appears to allocate a maximum size of 15% of the
drive's total space for restore points. Or it might be a fixed
number, I'm not sure. On my system disk, it's currently a tad over 16
gigs. That much space would've stored 80 restore points in XP!
To change that space allocation requires some command line hoop
jumping, rather than just moving a slider in the GUI. Tag: If you looking for computer hardware...low cost computers... Tag: 1902329
LAN Check
Every time I start my computer it goes through a "LAN Check" be for it boots
up.
why is it doing that? I have to push Esc to bypass the LAN Check.

Enlarge and Print
I am wanting to enlarge (and print) a portion of a road map on my copy
machine, but the HP model I have wonâ??t allow me to go bigger than 100%. Is
there any other way with XP to enlarge and print. I have Microsoft Office
2007. Thanks in advance for anticipated help. Tag: If you looking for computer hardware...low cost computers... Tag: 1902315
