My XP Home ...all up to date, ...Task manager | Performance shows two graphs
:-)
Device Manager says that "ACPI Multiprocessor PC" is working properly.
http://www.intel.com/support/processors/tools/htu/ test utility reports that
my cpu, bios and chipset failed the test !

Well, my motherboard, cpu and bios are all acceptable for hyperthreading,
according to Intel's specification requirements.
...I patched with KB896256 ages ago, ...can't remember why !
...could it just be that Intels test utility *.exe is a pile of c**p ?

any thoughts appreciated,

regards, Richard

You never said what cpu you've got. If it is a single core Pentium 4 then
the fact that you have two graphs in Task Manager is at least hopeful.

Try the update for xp,its
at:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/thankyou.aspx?familyId=2690495f-c21e-45bc-ae0f-5452b75283d0&displayLang=en&hash=N19l0iZv%2bP%2fCvPod%2b2HRt8D77Oe%2fi58arFiV6EXIJe9qtHKQiQzsLs2RpvbjD3nho39XInrWqD%2b68kYBj%2bsFRg%3d%3d
Also, install the intel chipset utility for youre MB,also, try running the
intel processor
ID utility. Also, hyperthreading needs to be enabled in the BIOS.

oops ! ...Pentium D935 3.2ghz 2mb L2 cache X 2, on a 865PE chipset.
...so it's a dual core, and Task Manager | Performance | View | "show one
graph per cpu" is selected, and indeed show two graphs,
and Device Manager "Computer" | shows "ACPI multi-processor PC,"

HPET option in bios is switched on.

I was just wondering why the Intel utility is giving me seemingly false
results.

If a dual core was hyperthreading you would see four graphs, not two. It
doesn't sound like you are hyperthreading. Intel did not continue
hyperthreading past the series you are using but it sounds like one of the
conditions required is not met. Are you using dual channel memory?

Just as a test ?
...I repair installed my XP Home with home-made sp2 slipstreamed / from my
original MS xp homed cd, a while ago,
..then of course had to:-
http://windowssecrets.com/2007/09/27/03-Stealth-Windows-update-prevents-XP-repair
...(MS updates fail after repair install, until these libraries are
re-registered, ...I think?)
regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll
regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll
regsvr32 /s wups2.dll
regsvr32 /s wups.dll
regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll
...which MS could have mentioned in,
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917964 &
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341 ....well I couldn't see it anywhere
!!

...anyhooo, no difference, ! ...and as soon as you mentioned it, ...I
fancy that I do remember, a long time ago, seeing "4" little cpu graph
windows, i.e. two cpu's and two virtual cpu's in Task Manager | Performance
but, I can't be sure about that now.
Intel hyperthreading utility still reports 3 negatives.
...best get on and do Windows updates, ...wonder if kb896256 patch will make
any difference ...seems to be for solving ACPI power saving glitches, if
appropriate, on some machines !

Hal.dll is correct, along with ntkmlpa & ntoskml executables.
On a fully patched/updated system, the version stamps are:
hall.dll 5.1.2600.2180
ntkmlpa.exe 5.1.2600.3093
ntoskml.exe 5.1.2600.3093

I can't find references to Task Manager | Performance screen, when set to

Ahah ! ...well spotted, ...and, I'll be darned !!!!
...You learn something new everyday! I sort of assumed that because P4's
had that feature on them a while ago, and that as my board has that feature
on it, that it would be on all Intel cpu's from inception of HT ...onwards.
I did spot a discussion where someone mentioned that cpu hyperthreading
arcitecture finished at a certain point, and even then the penny didn't
drop.
Obviously, this is why the Intel HT test utility can't find it in my machine
!
...now I'm thinking, I wonder how could I have missed that when I was
digging around the Intel site myself, quite a long time ago ?

...much obliged.
