SP3 gone from WU?

A couple days ago, there was a notice in the tray that "Updates are
available for your computer" and when I clicked on it I found that SP3
was being offered.

I decided not to install it yet, I'd do it over the weekend (I have WU
configured for "Notify but don't automatically install"). Now the
update notice is gone. This happened on both my computers.

Has anybody else had this happen? Anybody know why?

In short, excessive demand. Look in windowsupdate.log and you'll probably
see many instances of "Update is not allowed to download due to regulation"
since 06 May-08.

It can take up to 7 days for all Automatic Update users be offered new
updates. In the case of a Service Pack release, it may take several weeks.

You can try downloading/installing the updates via Windows/Microsoft Update:
Understand that by doing so, you're pushing all the Automatic Updates users
further back in the queue (which may explain, at least in part, why
Automatic Updates hasn't brought them in for you yet).

MS had said that Automatic Updates wouldn't be offering SP3 until "early
summer."

EDIT: A confidential MS source told me that SP3 was only being offered to
machines where Automatic Updates was set to "Notify Only" or "Download but
Notify." I have AU set to Notify Only and was offered SP3 earlier this
week. I declined it but didn't hide it (I don't think it can be hidden).
The most recent entry in windowsupdate.log says "Found 0 updates" so MS
*might* have pulled it. YMMV, of course.

Is that anything to be concerned about? (This is the first time I
ever looked at that log -- I didn't even know it existed.)

I'm not in a big rush to get SP3; in fact I'm still not certain
whether I'll install it at all. So I can wait until it comes through
on WU. I just wondered why it showed up and then disappeared.

Thanks for the info, Robear.

(I snipped the stuff that I thought was immaterial to the discussion,
as is my habit. Just trying to save a bit of bandwidth. But if it's
preferable not to do so, I'll try to remember not to.)
