    - Disk space differences as reported in explorer? When your right click on a drive in XP's windows explorer, and get these different reported sizes, what is the story? Example, for a 20 GB partition - rounded to 3 significant digits below: (choose whichever I guess; the two listings below are seen next to each other in windows explorer): 12. 4GB 11.5 GB used spaee (tot capacity adds up to 19.9 GB) 7.56 GB 7.04 GB free space (tot capacity adds up to 18.6 GB) (tot = 19.9 GB) (tot = 18.5 GB) and as yet a third variation reported in BING: 11.9 GB used, 7.22 GB free (total = 19.1 GB) Anyone have a good explanation for the differences?     - compare ad-aware & bitdefender Hi I have both ad-aware 2007 (free) & bitdefender (free v10 OEM) installed. I have used them for over half years. Ad-aware usually detects more than 5 infections everyday; however, bitdefender detects nearly nothing. I use Full system scan in bitdefender and smart scan in ad-aware only. I am wondering why?     - Daylight Savings Time change not observed I have the "Automatically adjust clock for daylight savings changes" checkbox checked, but it says that it is Pacific Standard Time. I can change the time manually, but it periodically reverts to the incorrect time.     - Blue screen caused by driver issue Hi, I keep getting a blue screen for the past couple of weeks and have no idea why. I have XP on my computer; have not installed any new hardware in months.     - Backup help needed Help! I have created a backup schedule for my PC to back up the documents and settings folder to a network drive. The problem is that each night it adds a new folder to the ever increasing backup. Now, after a week, the backup when opened has 6 copies of C\docs\data and its blown out to over 2 gb I set it up using the wizard and append option and scheduled it to backup each day.     - XP Activation Hello everyone. I've read old posts regarding XP activation/re-activation but on the same machine (ie, after reformatting, re-install). My question is I'm planning on getting rid of my desktop (completely wiping the HDD of the OS which is WinXP Home SP2). I'm buying a second hand laptop with *no* OS installed. I would like to put my XP Home SP2 on the laptop (after wiping it off my old desktop). I've read from an old post that once I activate XP to a system it's locked in to that system's specs?     - XP Service packs I've had conflicting information that all Service Packs are cumulative, and from another source that SP3 is in fact stand alone. Logic tells me that it is unlikely that SP3 would incorporate SP's 1 and 2 and all XP updates from inception, since it's offered as a "Download" via MS update service.     - Fonts disappear from Office apps after reboot but remain in OS?? So - I'm at my wits end - any suggestions would be appreciated!! On an XP SP2 machine with Office 2003 SP2 we install a true-type font and it works just fine. We can see it in Fonts folder as well as use it in Office products. We logoff/login - same thing - works fine. We restart system - this font is no longer available in Office products but are still visible in Fonts folder. This happens with many fonts that we install - so it's not font specific. We've rebuilt the device twice and the problem reoccurs for this pocket of users. We've had them login to test machines and it works fine (ruling out ID related issue). I've logged into his machine and had the issue (generating a new local profile). So - we think we've narrowed it down to their physical devices with a physical reboot. From reading another thread re: fonts, I did confirm the registry of the device does have the Fonts key and does contain all the fonts. This problem is specific to the applications (Adobe and Office) not being able to see/use the fonts after a reboot. Has anyone come across something like this?     - Boot to BIOS This may be the wrong group to address this issue, but I have a family member who has requested help--his computer is in a semi-paralyzed state. He has a Dell Dimension E521 with Phoenix Award BIOS. The problem is that he cannot enter anything from the keyboard. I suggested a first attempt at a repair reinstall from his Windows XP installation disk. He needs to set the boot sequence to boot from his CD/DVD drive so he can boot from the installation disk. He says he cannot get the computer to enter the BIOS System Setup from boot. He has tried pressing F2 before the Dell splash screen, which should be the correct key to press to interrupt the normal Windows boot process. Any other suggestions as to how to get the computer into the System Setup or a more relevant group to address this issue?     - can't set .jpg MetaData over network I have two WinXP-pro SR/2 machines connected by hardwired Ethernet. A scanner is connected to one; a hard drive to hold files is connected to the other. Directory on hard drive is marked for simple file sharing and authorizing other network users to change files. Files created by the scanner can be saved to hard drive without problem. Once saved, they can be renamed without problem. However... MetaData on .jpg files cannot be edited / added from first machine with the scanner, although once metadata is added to the .jpg files via the second machine containing the hard drive, the metadata can be displayed on the first machine with the scanner.     - searching old Microsoft word files for text string Every once in a while I need to retrieve information that I know exists somewhere on the hard drive of my machine in an old Microsoft Word2.0 file. My tests seem to indicate that both with WinXP/SR2 and Copernic search functions no longer find text strings within the old Word2.0 files.     - Can't Install Installer Cleanup I've got an application that isn't starting up. The help forums for that App say to uninstall using MS Installer Cleanup utility. I downloaded the MS Installer Cleanup utility, and I now have a file named, "msicuu2.exe" on my PC. When I double-click the file, it starts to install the utility, I'm asked to accept the license agreement, which I do, then I get a dialog box stating, "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable". It is looking for a file named, "msicuu.msi". When I click "cancel" (because I don't know where that file might be), I get an error dialog stating, "Error 1714. The older version of Windows Installer Clean Up cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group". This is my home PC, and I am the technical support group for it. ;( Hoping that someone can tell me how to get to the point where I can install and run the Cleanup utility.     - Software Activation Methods ?? Hello, I am looking for a license component which I can easily integrate in my existing C-applications. I would like to offer trial-versions of my applications via my website for potential clients to download. So the purpose of this license component would be to control which features of the application should be disabled after the trial period has expired. The potential clients can use the application will all its features for a 30-day trial period after which selected features of the application will be limited/disabled. If the client decides that he would like to buy the application, he can go to my website and fill out and submit a form. The client pays for the product and a license key will be generated automatically. The client enters the license key in the application to enable the features that he paid for. My questions are: 1) Which license generator should I use on my website to automatically generate license keys? 2) Which license component would you recommend that I use? 3) Other advice? If you have several suggestions, please post them. To sum up what I am looking for: 1) The license component must be easy to integrate into my existing C-applications 2) It must be easy to register new products in the license generator 3) The license key has to be "secure" and hard to "decode" 4) The license generator must also be secure in the sense that it shouldn't be easy to figure out how the license keys are generated 5) It has to be close to impossible to reset the trial period for the trial versions clients download from my website.     - Windows XP Fails to Open I have accidentally uninstalled the driver for the keyboard on my Dell Dimension 4500. ""No problem" I thought, "I have the Resource Disk containing the drivers." But I was wrong - the Resource Disk I recently received from Dell does not contain any keyboard drivers. Can anyone suggest another source for the driver? There are some important consequences, since I cannot use the keyboard I cannot log on as the Administrator because I cannot type-in the password. I can log-in using the Guest account and run a number of programs, if I only use the mouse, because the Guest account does not need a password, but, as a Guest, I cannot use System Restore or change items using the Control Panel.     - Application Error Quite frequently I get an popup message on my laptop saying "Application Error - userInit.exe" - "The instruction at "0x7c901010" reference memory at "0x052f273C". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program." The application referred to changes from time to time. Also seen msn_sl.exe and msfeed<something>.exe and Iexplorer.exe and a few others. It appears the "0x7c901010" address is always the same while the second address changes from time to time. Ran Windows Memory Diagnostic yesterday, using extended test and it found no memory issues (ran for 12 hours). I have home edition and would like that whatever family member is logged-in to windows(with individual user accounts) that person can answer a "skype call".     - CPU 100% Hi, my CPU is 100% all the time, from the second I log on. When I first got it, my computer was running XP Home AMD Processor, until I got a virus from one of those electric picture frames (which when I plugged it in it formatted my hard drive). Now I have installed XP Pro. setup for an i386 (Intel) processor when I actually have an AMD. Could this be why it is 100% all the time, or do I have software making it that high? I found i have the hardware, Creative - Sound - SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio, and i found i have this hardware!! Therefore, i used the customised update in the microsoft.com, with all other updates. When the process is to the updating of the Creative - Sound - SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio item, a dialog box is shown and then a blue screen is flashed for half second, and it restarted by itself.     - XP Office Viewer ... I have XP Home & Son has XP Office 2007 Hello We recently bought our son a laptop for schoolwork which had to have XP Office and today he sent a .docx file over for me to print but it wouldn't open as I only have XP Home with Works Suite. It took me to a download page and I downloaded the Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003 and it installed. On the download page it said that I should be able to view a list of documents and .docx would be one of them. I went to Start, All Programmes, clicked on Office Word Viewer and tried to open the document (.docx) but it wanted me to do more downloads and this is where I stopped as I wasn't sure what I was doing. I already have on my computer the xl viewer and powerpoint viewer as I do get sent these documents to read and then print off. Any tips on what I should do and if I have downloaded something wrong would be appreciated as we can't afford to buy him his own printer as well as just buying the laptop. Thank you very much.     - mysql dump batch file stopped working. Hello, I had someone make a batch file for me that would backup mysql db and recently it stopped working and I don't know the cause and how to fix it. The bat file has not changed so it must have been a system change. The error I get is right after the dump code and it says The system cannot find the path specified.     - Laptop AC Adapter and Laptop Battery Question The AC adapter to a HP zd8000 laptop is broken and needs to be replaced. HP however nolonger sells the AC adapter but sells a number of other AC adapters for the zd8000.     - Can not open files with ext. .rtf In My Documents folder, Notepad works fine, but Wordpad disappeared. Replaced with all such files ending in .rtf. Right clicking those files gives about six choices for opening file, but only using Notepad works. However, I lost the ability to click on links previously possible with Wordpad?     - WinXP--Can't limit my own user account--Explorer.exe runtime error I want to make my own user account limited (no administrative privileges) as I understand it is safer. I created a new user, gave it administrative rights, booted into it, and made my original user limited. But then I can't boot into the original user account. Windows fails to load and gives me an Explorer.exe C++ runtime error. If I go back into the new admin account and give admin rights back to the original user, it loads normally. What am I missing?     - Upload problems with Windows XP SP2 I'm having trouble with uploads to web sites on my Windows XP SP2 machine. I basically can't upload any files in in a web request. If I try going to a bandwidth test page, it does the download test fine, but then won't even complete the upload test. I can't send emails through my web email client. I can't upload files to web pages. Each time I try it hangs and then times out. It shouldn't be a browser problem. It is the same with Firefox and IE. I thought maybe it was a hardware problem. I tried switching out the network cable, tried switching ports on my router, I even installed a different network card with the same results on the new card. Clearly it shouldn't be a hardware problem. It isn't the internet connection. I have another computer going through the same router to the same internet connection and it doesn't have the problem. I can upload files over the network to the other computer (though it does seem a little slower than download). Firewall is turned off. I really don't know what else to look for.     - File and folder names are truncated illogically Hi A few names of my files and folders are truncated (in the "Filena..." fashion). This occurs in list view, thumbnail view and large icon view. They do not seem to be truncated in the normal sense. Let me explain: if you click on them, the whole filename will NOT show. So, if I have two folders with similar names, for example, it is impossible for me to find out which is which if I don't open it. First, I tried fixing it by enlarging the horizontal icon space (I even tried 150). No dice. Then, I tried resizing the icon font to a smaller size just to see if there'd be any difference. I'll take "Unreal Tournament 3" as an example for this. Before resizing (size 8), the icon text said "Unreal Tournamen...", and after resizing (size 7) it said "Unreal Tourname... 3" (with the 3 being on a new row). This is quite illogical, if you ask me. The weird part is, if I rename "Unreal Tournament 3" to e.g "Unreal Tournament 3asodasjdijadajsiodjaosjdaoi", it will function regularly, with the name being truncated normally, and it will also allow me to view the complete name if I click on the icon to give it focus. Another illogical example is that the folder "InstallShield Installation Information" only gets one truncated character, and a folder called "Hewlett-Packard" becomes truncated to "Hewlett-Packa...". One would think the former is a longer name, but it seems Windows has other opinions on that. Again, you cannot view the full names by clicking on the folders. I have also looked in the registry - IconTitleWrap is set to 1. There MUST be a solution to this. I am using a new computer with XP SP2 and IE7. Windows did not behave this way on my old computer with SP1 and IE6 (I am stating the IE version just in case - I've seen a few occurrences where the version of IE affected other parts of the system). About a month ago, my drag and drop became unreliable. Now, sometimes when I
reboot, it will work for one or two drag and drops, but after that it doesn't
work. It doesn't work on the desktop or within programs.

I tried the fix provided by TaurArian on this forum for a similar problem,
but it didn't work. -- That was Kelly's tweak Line #233 on
