    - XP Will Not Start Up ::Hello.: ::I use Windows XP home edition (Version 5.1 Service pack 3).: ::When I switch my PC on I see the XP logo and the bar at the botto showing the program is loading.: ::But the welcome screen does not appear, I get a blank screen.: ::I held the restart button down and the programme reloaded and gave m a choice of safe mode options.: ::In safe mode I did a system restore to a date about a week ago when had no problems.: ::I then restarted the PC hoping the problem would be solved but agai XP started to load but the welcome page did not appear just a blan screen.     - Automatic Updates I had my Automatic Updates set to "Download updates, but let me decide when to install" and sometime today, an update came in. Since I was away from the computer, the update shield is now missing from the taskbar and when I choose "Turn off computer" it shows that it will install the downloaded updates when the system is turned off. Since I believe that this update is SP3 and I choose not to install it at this time, how can I tell Windows to skip this install, or how can I get the shield back in the taskbar so I can choose to not install it? It used to leave the shield in the taskbar until I made a choice, but now it appears to no longer do that. I know that I can chose the option to not install the update on shutdown, but when I bring the system back up, that install update choice is there again. I just don't want SP3 getting installed by mistake, since I'm not ready to do the install and I'm not sure at this time I even want to. Many thanks for any help.     - Winamp ntdll.dll error The computer was again hanging by connecting my mobile modem (MUTTS). So far every things works fine only Win gives the next error. (error signature: win.exe modname: ntdll.dll) I reinstalled Winamp 5.21 But did not uninstall it first, afraid of loosing data. Is there a solution, can I replace or repair something?     - No Windows sounds but do have WMP sounds I'm so confused. I've just finished rebuilding an old Gateway PC. This morning I had Windows sounds (the logon ta-da and other beeps and boops) but audio CD's wouldn't make any sound. Playing wav files through WMP did not do anything. I then updated the audio drivers downloaded from Gateway for this PC. Now I can play any media through WMP, but the Windows sounds do not work. When I go into Control Panel | Sound and Audio Devices Properties, Volume tab, it says "No Audio Device". When I go to the Sounds tab and try playing any of the sounds such as Asterisk, I get the error message: Windows cannot play the sound %SystemRoot%\media\Windows XP Error.wav When I go into Device Manager, there was a question mark next to Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver. I couldn't find anything about it on the Gateway driver list. Searching Google came up a suggestion to delete this driver and reboot.     - Limited User Account has too much access to computer Hello to anyone with the knowledge! I'm using XP Home Svc pack 2. My first problem is that I would like the access of more folders to be restricted to limited user accounts on my computer. I don't understand why in the sharing tab (under properties) of some folders I can check "make this folder private" and in other folders, this is not checkable or uncheckable. I would think that any folder on the Administrator's account should be denied access to a Limited account, not just the Administrator's My Docs folder. My second problem and the reason why I'm here is that I have an external hard drive connected by USB. I can go into the Guest user account, and have total access to that external hard drive. Is there a way for the Administrator to block access to this or any other connected device that shows up in My Computer? If not, then why not? This seems to be a very basic and important feature of having multiple user accounts on one shared machine. I do not want to encrypt the contents of my external hard drive, nor do I want to unplug the drive and lock it up somewhere every time I leave the computer. Thank you for your time. Been having a problem for the last 2 weeks so I removed my CAT 5 RCA cable modem cable and put in the old USB cable and now I can recieve and send mail!! The CAT 5 cable works on my laptop and I can recieve and send mail on it.     - XP mess Hi gurus I have the following problems and I really hope that you gurus can help. I was installing a new video card when suddenly the blue screen of D came up, I put the original video card back and tried to restart the computer but always the blue screen came up, I asked for help and this was done. XP cd->repair->chkdsk /r->fixboot c:, this allowed me to boot the computer all the way up and as you can imaging I was really happy, I could see all my files and everything else( I know I promise backup will be done daily). well while everything looked fine I start to have the following problems 1) I can not copy within my computer or outside.-> I right the mouse, click on copy and then go to the folder or drive I want to paste and the paste option is not present, if I drag and drop nothing happens. 2) Start->program->accessories->system tools->backup... this does not work, nothing happens, nada comes up. 3) there are a bunch of service that dont start nor manually or automatically. 4) Does this by any changes has to do with Registry and if so, can I get one of those registry fixer software to fix this. It seems like everything is a mess and I dont know where to start looking.- here is where you gurus comes in. This is quiet a challange as it seems like the frea... machine has live on its own.     - Poer surge on Hub Port I recently purchased a portable external hard drive. It's a USB powered drive. When I plug it into my laptop and try to copy something to it, I get a dialogue box that says "Power Surge On Hub Port, A USB device has malfunctioned and exceeded the power limits of it's hub port.     - Strange Monitor Problem - maybe I just finished setting up and installing programs in a new PC running windows XP. Something must have happened and the monitor screen went black. If I try to hit "reset" I can nothing seems to happen. I think the computer shuts down and restarts but the screen remains black The only way I can get the monitor to work (if it is the monitor) is to unplug the PC (when the screen is blank) and plug it back in. Once I have a screen and shut down normally using the start menu, the next time I try to start it up I get nothing but a black screen. I can't even tell if the PC is booting up or getting past the cmos boot up as the screen is black. I have tried a different monitor and the same thing happens so i know it's not the monitor.     - Service Manager / sqlmanger.exe I'd like to speed my bootups by removing unneeded items from starting up using MSCONFIG. One of the items is "Service Manager" (sqlmanger.exe). Some of the Google references think it's a useful file, but I'm not aware of using SQL in my normal applications, and I think I don't need to have it start at bootup.     - cannot put data on cd's via DVD and DVD RW drvies seems I cannot put photos from my documents, etc. onto a cd via my DVD and DVD RW drives. If I put a CD that already has data on it in either of these , it reads the data on that CD just fine. However, if I put a blank CD into either of the drives , my computer is not recognizing the such and says to " insert a disk" into either the E or F drive, --whichever the case may -when I'm trying either drive. There is a Roxio program on here that sometimes pops up and wants me to put data on it via that program, however- I just want to "send to" the photo -or whatever -straight to the CD without going through Roxio.     - Failing to save settings I am using Windows XP Home Edition. Recently, I do not seem to be able to save my settings anymore. I have noticed that in several areas: - Folder view settings: I can't apply permanent view settings to folders anymore, the view changes back to the (wrong) default for whatever it had been before. I can't specifiy the folder type anymore (music/pictures/documents...) and can't choose a picture to display on the thumbnail version either. - Favourites: In my favourites menu, I can't sort the favourite by names anymore, parts of them get collapsed, and if I drag and drop a folder to another location, this step has been reverted when I check back. - Desktop icons: I can't rearrange my desktop icons anymore, it always goes back to the previous view as well. - Internet security settings: If I select "permanently allow pop-ups from this site", it will prompt me again the next time I try to open a pop-up (it took me a while to get this question window to open). I have noticed an error message, something like: "Failing to store in registry", which came up a few times when I was downloading and saving documents or pictures to my hard drive or external hard drive.     - Flash Player I've not been able to download and install Flash Player. It downloads ok and starts the install then I get a message that the "Install Failed." I go to their website and follow troubleshooting, etc. and it still won't install. They suggest reloading Internet Explorer (I have 7). Did that and still wouldn't install. Any suggestions? ps. I tried logging off from my "Ant" administrator account and logged in as "administrator" and I cannot eevn access H:\Images\C-07142008\ directory\folder at all ("access is denied"). I rebooted and went to safe mode with my "administrator" account based on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823306 ... I also got the error, but it said I could take over the ownership, audits, etc. (with Administrators) since XP didn't know who owned these files. I applied to Administrators and now I can access, rename, move, etc. I made these *.ghs and *.gho files from a Norton 2003 (12/24/2003) DOS version [not the Windows version since I don't trust Windows]. I backed up my C: drive before upgrading XP Pro. SP2 to SP3 in case anything goes wrong. Any ideas why this happened? I don't recall this happening in the past (2006 and earlier). Was there a change in XP SP3 or some KB updates to cause this in NTFS? I used the same exact Ghost DOS and method many times from the past. Is there a fix or this?     - My Documents - appears 3 times -which does System Restore not restore? I understand System Restore will not restore/protect files in My Documents, such as doc. files, meaning that on a restore such files will not be affected and I need not worry. My actual worry is to know which of the 3 My Documents folders I have in Explorer System Restore does not restore. These three are clones of each other in that they contain exactly the same folders. Going down from Desktop, The first is Desktop\My Computer\Local Disk\Documents and Settings\my name\My Documents - the second is Desktop\My Computer\my name (is called my name and not My Documents, but has the same contents as the two so-called My Documents, so I refer to it here as the second My Documents) - the third is Desktop\My Documents. So which of these does System Restore ignore? BTW, why does Explorer maintain three versions of these? Which is the one ordinary users like me should look out for as the 'controlling' My Documents, as it were? I have always wondered about these particular questions.     - Failed Updates I am sure this has been covered before, but I am using Outlook Express and I do not know how to search the archives. I have XP Pro installed with SP3 and plenty of memory, both disk and on board (2gb). I tried Microsoft Update and received the message that 11 updates failed to install, even after several tries.     - Where does the files to a mounted drive go? Where does the files to a mounted drive end up? For example, I have a Asus 701 with a 4GB SSD (solid state drive). Not a lot of room, plus writing to SSD and flash drives reduces how long they will last. EEE PCs also sports a SD(HC) slot. I have two SDHC 16GB, so I have a lot of space now. Problem though, lots of programs won't install on a removable drive. And Windows doesn't like parts of itself on a removable drive either (swap file for example). So the solution is to use "Mount in the following empty NTFS folder" option. And I installed many programs through a mounted folder and things were fine. I also modified where my Settings and Documents folder lives to the SDHC drive (D:). Well I found a free program that moves Settings and Document folder much easier. This program is called "EAZ-FIX folder-mover.exe". Although it only sees fixed drives and in my case, only Drive C. Plus you can't pick the folder, as it uses \mydata. So no problem, mount drive D (SDHC) in \mydata and let folder mover do its job. Well I had 1.3GB free before on Drive C. Now I have only a few MBs. And Drive D has a lot more room than it did before. But I figure since things really wouldn't be moved around a lot, just the paths. I searched why 1.3GB was lost on Drive C and 1.3GB free space was gained on Drive D. I can't find anything at all. Although Settings and Documents is a lot smaller than it used to be. The only thing I can think of, is that Windows XP treats the folder on (C) and the mounted drive (D) as one of the same. Thus your data could be on Drive C or Drive D. Is this correct?     - Disabling text balloons from system tray, and enabling them later Hi all, At the moment I'm working on my new system. And there are a quite a few things I need to set before I'm happy with it. One of the things I hate is how XP handles ' and ". At the moment I need to follow it by pressing the space bar before the quote or double quote appears. But thatÂ´s not the question of this post. IÂ´m wondering how I can disable the text balloons that pop up from the system tray? I dislike messages instructing me to press here to view/hide icons, and the like. At the same time, in the future I would like to develop a program that uses pop ups from the system tray. I gather that the program will not work when I've disabled the text balloons?     - font problem IE7 Hi Suddenly some websites are hardly readable, the font seems to be changed and I can only read it if I chose (very) lager characters or set zoom to 150%. Before this sudden change there was no problem. I can't thinks of any changes I made to the system in between, though there might have been a windows crash. The wiki site is one of the sites with this problem (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoofdpagina). Using Firefox3 on the same computer shows the same site in perfect condition.     - Problems after reinstalling Windows XP Since reinstalling my XP Home I have three problems of varying importance. The first is having no sound, the drivers were installed correctly in order and no downloads have proved helpful. The second is an error upon Windows opening it reads 'The procedure entry point GetProcessImageFileNameW could not be located in the dynamic link library PSAPI.DLL'. The last is ridiculous but annoying. When pressing shift and hitting @, it recognises it as being " [quotes]. Pressing the shift button and " reads as an @ sign. Any help would be welcomed.     - computer does not reognize my optical drives after inserting a cd into my drive,it would not play or eject..I removed my disk via one of the many helpful video hints (using a paper clip-by inserting into the access hole and slowly turning the gear-AFTER powering down) I tried to repair it by using system restore,by going back to an earlier date and time ,BUT it wouldn't work.My cd drive can not eject on its own nor does the power light comes on.My dvd drive light does come on,it opens and closes by using the power button,but it does not play on my Windows media player...Everything worked before I put that cd disk in.It also happened to me a while back.I just forgot how I did it...Mahalo (Thank You) for your time.....     - problem installing this hardware-Apple IPOD USB driver- I installed the latest update to iTunes. Now, when I connect my IPod to my PC, I get the following error message: "There was a problem installing this hardware-apple IPOD USB driver-An Error Occurred During the Installation of this device. The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request." I have searched for an updated driver, but I keep getting the same error message as above. The iPod shows up in device manager, but with a yellow exclamation point next to it. It says "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)." I've also reinstalled the driver.cab file from my Windows installation disk, but none of this has resolved this issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.     - view network connections list empty I'm unable to connect to our LAN with any of our WiFi routers. Other systems in the office have no trouble. When I choose View Network Connections no Wifi routers show up in the list. I know the radio works because I was able to get it working by adding a preferred connection. The connection worked but the view network connection list is still empty. I ran LAN adapter diags and they came up ok. I then removed and reinstalled the wifi adapter to see if this would help and now again I have no connection. Any suggestion on how I can fix it? Thanks for any help with this.     - Applications dont work from USB harddisk On an external USB disk with 500 GB and FAT32, I have some applications that can run without installation, e.g. Media Player Classic. When I attach the disk to my laptop (with XP on NTFS), MPC runs fine. When I attach it to my desktop PC (XP on NTFS as well), MPC does not run, access to the USB disk "hangs", its LED turns red.     - XP SP2 Install with IDE and SATA Drives (2nd Post) I have a new PC. Hardware: Mother Board "Micro-Star International: MS-7211" 1024 MB DDR ram I have a WD 200gig IDE HD(WDC WD2000JB-00GVC0) partitioned into two dynamic drives with all my backup information. I have a new SATA 316gig HD( Hitachi HDT725032VLA360) that I have loaded XP onto a 50gig partition. I have a ST 1.2gig IDE HD(Seagate Technology 1275MB - ST31276A) that I have to use for bootup according to install CD. configuration: Sata is first in hard drive order (listed as D) 1.2gig is next (listed as C) 200gig is last (listed as G and H) Situation: When I install, the setup program works and finds all the drives and partitions. I delete the partition from the 1.2gig drive, and delete the partition on the SATA drive. I create the 50gig partition on the SATA drive and select it as the install location. Setup formats C and then formats D. Setup finished the processes as normal, reboots and completes the process. It appears to be a working machine. I take out the install disk, put in a driver disk and install (requiring a reboot). Reboot fails. I put in the Windows XP SP2 disk and it boots fine. I mean how does it know when I used the shortcuts the last time? Where
does it store that information?
