HD disappears
I have XP MCE and I watch DVDs in the computer and on the screen.
Sometimes the HD icon that lets me open and eject from the DVD RW
disappears. The only thing I've been able to do is reinstall the entire
system. Is there a registry key or something I can alter to stop this
behavior?

Sharing Files Between Home Vista and Home Windows XP?
I just bought a new Windows Vista Home Edition, and we already have a
Windows Home WIndows XP.
Both are on the same Linksys router, the old Windows XP's IP address
is 192.168.1.100 and the new Vista's is 192.168.1.102
I can ping the old Windows XP (at ...100) from the new Windows Vista
(...102), but not vice versa.
They both belong to the workgroup "WORKGROUP".
All I want to do is share files between these two home computers on
the same LAN. The Windows XP cannot find the Windows Vista computer
through Windows Explorer, but Windows Vista at least asks for a login
and password when I try to view files on Windows XP via \
\192.168.1.100\c$
Further, when I enable the Guest account on Windows XP, Windows Vista
says it cannot even find the Windows XP computer at all.
To summarize:
How do I share files between two home computers, one is Windows XP,
the other Windows Vista?
Thanks. Tag: post delected Tag: 1901475
SP3 failed when installing
Seemed to take forever for it to get going but it finally got to where
it says something like "checking registry" ot "modifying registry" at
that point it stopped and gave me an abort install message.
I was left with no choice but to uninstall the bleeding thing...THAT
left me with a message saying XP has been modified but not completely
and may not work properly. Thank you MS.. you dolts.
The machine then rebooted on its own and gave me a blue screen saying
it couldn't find a file... but then it did and it loaded after a long
pause. It's working now but I am afraid to shut it off, I'm backing up
the files I didn't have backed up prior to this fiasco. I don't even
know if I shut the machine off it will restart.
I can get to the restore point but I don't know if that will take out
all the changes SP3 made.
What to do now?
Thanks,

UPHclean 1.6
After digging around and looking for tips to pin down what to do about the
occasional lengthy shut-down, and XP Home shutdown obviously help up by
something that's not behaving, ...and bearing in mind that I added the patch
backalong to elongate shutdown on fast cpu's !
...and having read through this:-
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=1B286E6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=en
and this:-
http://blogs.technet.com/uphclean/
I think I understand it, ...or do I ?
...I assume that I have to add the key myself ?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UPHClean\Parameters\SHARING_VIOLATION_REMAP
to 1
or is that only for ver. 2.0
...and how does ver. 1.6 work anyway i.e. is the *.exe in C:\Program

No Explorer refresh
Ever since they were updated to SP3, we've noticed that the Windows Explorer
on our XP machines has stopped automatically refreshing after file
operations.
Knowledge Base article 823291 seems to describe the situation but it says
the problem was corrected Service Pack 2. We never had the problem until
SP3. Is this a known issue in SP3? Is the registry change noted in the
article supposed to fix it now too? Tag: post delected Tag: 1901467
missing information bubble
Appologies if this has already been answered but I've looked everywhere and
can't find an answer.
I have lost the 'information bubble' that appears on the taskbar when, for
instance you go to 'safely remove hardware' there is a 'pop' sound and a
'bubble' appears saying that is is safe to remove drive X. That is just an
example but I get the same symptom with everthing like that. I get the sound

The SP3 installed via Windows Update killed all my application

Incorrect SD Card Size read
Aloha all. I don't know if this is really an OS question, so it may be OT,
but I don't know what it is. Maybe someone can help, or at least point me in
the right direction?
I bought a digital picture frame. I wanted to load a bunch of pics onto an
SD card. I used a 1GB SD card, and tried to load about 300MB. At 216 it
stopped and said the card was full. It's not. I then tried a 512MB card.
Same thing! I then tried a 1GB USB Flash Drive. Same thing! I then tried
both a 4GB USB Flash and SD card. Both did the complete load fine.
Why do the 1GB and under state they are full at only 216MB? I even
reformatted the cards several time with no effect. Can anyone help? Tag: post delected Tag: 1901425
BSOD when installing XP on SATA2 PC - no SATA 2 host adapter drive
When XP came out in 2001 it only supported EIDE, but my SATA 2 system needs
SATA 2 host adapter drivers to install. My BSOD stop error indicates that my
SATA 2 hard drive (and) controller is not being seen. I even tried running a
USB external floppy drive to load the drivers with the F6 prompt, but you
need a complicated file on the floppy called "oemsetup.info" or something
like that which I have no idea how to create. I haven't been able to get my
32-bit XP to install, but I really wanted to go X64 on this system. I 'm not
100% positive, but I even think that I have the required SATA 2 drivers, but
I can't find a way to use them. I have fought with this thing for weeks and
have almost been in tears, but I know that there is a way that this can be
done! The answer may be complex, but there is a way to do this... Please

SP3 won't install due to kernel change - tune up utilities
Here is a possible warning to help some readers.
If trying to load SP3 and you get an error saying it can't load due to a
core file (kernel) being changed.
See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/327101
It gives choices, none of which worked in our case. But did make us
stumble onto the fix.
Seems Tune Up Utilities 2008 can change your startup in boot.ini to use
TUKernel.exe not Kernel.exe. Something about a new splash screen etc.
SP3 does not like this and aborts.
So if anyone else has this issue read the lower part of this form thread
at post #8.

registry question - display DPI location?
Was a l-o-n-g time user of 800 x 600 screen resolution; used standard
small font display setting. Recently decided to change to 1024 x 768
because a geography program requires it, however finding the right
combination of desktop fonts and font sizes was tough. Ended up changing
the display DPI (desktop, properties, settings, advanced) to custom,
108%. This setting with the combination of fonts is do-able on these
tired old eyes!
But now, another program (encyclopedia software) will not start because
IT requires 'Normal size, 96 DPI' to be displayed !! (go figure)
I believe the software will display just fine (will be readable) with
103 DPI so the question is, what (registry?) setting is the program
looking at startup to check DPI setting?

Can't disconnect Web folder
Hi,
In My Network Places, I have a connection set up to a folder on a SharePoint

from within Windows Explorer. It asks for my credentials, and then I'm in
until the next reboot.
The problem is that once I've authenticated, my entire system is slowed
down. I'm not sure why that is so, but I thought that an easy fix would be to
disconnect (rather than having to reboot or just live with the slowness).
However, I can't find a way to disconnect.
Right-clicking the folder does not produce any Disconnect option. Disconnect
Network Drive doesn't work because I haven't mapped to any drives.
Any ideas?

Windows XP boot up
OK, this is going to be wordy but I'm trying to get all the details. I
haven't changed anything recently but now I'm getting the warning icon about
security alerts I have been using zone alarm and AVG for a year and this has
never happened before. The worst thing though is maybe another problem but
when it boots it will go through the XP screen where the blue dashes move
across the screen and then go blank and not do anything else or right after
loging in it will load the wallpaper and then not do anything else. In either
case the hard drive LED is not doing anything, the machine just sets there.
No matter how long I leave it, it's not coming up. At that point the only
thing to do is force a reboot. When I get the wallpaper, I can CNTRL,ALT,DEL
and sometimes a process called "x10nets.exe" is using 50% of CPU but even if
I shut that down it still won't boot. If it goes to the XP screen it goes
black and stops, if it goes to the wallpaper, there is no task bar and no
icons, just the hour glass. I am sorry this is so long but I wanted to get
all the pertinent details. Thanks for taking time to read this and help if
you can. Tag: post delected Tag: 1901197

No Open Button in File Download Security Warning Dialog Box
XP SP2
IE6
I have a user who is trying to open a PDF file that *she* posted to one of
our internal Intranet sites. When she clicks the link she gets the File
Download - Security Warning dialog box, but there is no Open button--just
Save and Cancel, and the Save button doesn't work. The user is able to open
other PDF files on the same site, from the Internet, and off her local hard
drive, so it does not appear to be any kind of issue with file type
associations.
I've done some googling, but everything that I've found has indicated, "this
problem does not occur with Windows XP SP2 or Internet Explorer 6," which I
found rather aggravating because my user is running both and has the
problem. Most of the articles I've seen talk about Vista and IE7, and
mention the certificate (.cer) file. I thought that I would try importing
our root CA to see if that does the trick, but beyond that I have no ideas.
Does anyone know how to fix this issue, or at least have some suggestions?
