MS backup is an application to be avoided.
Best way to backup is to just burn your data directly to cd/dvd

or use a third party utility

Try checking in the Event Viewer->Applications or system sections found in
the Control Panel->Administrative Tools. Double click items that have a red
X to open an Event Properties windows then click the blue link to see if
Help And Support can shed some light on this.

Oh yeah - get a decent backup program. NTBackup is a POS.

Ditch using Windows backup and download this excellent freeware program:

Nonsense; ntbackup is a fully functional and very useful and stable
utility and will get the job done whether it be a single file or entire
system it backs up. The only real feature it's missing is the ability
to zip or otherwise compress files which to me is a biggie.

OP:
"Catastrophic Failure" I've never seen happen with it. What else does
it say in the report about it? Do you have shadow copy services
turned off? They're needed if the backup includes system files. Got
enough room on the target drive? Pro or Home? Networked? Etc etc.
Post the errored part of the report and a few lines before/after it
and it's probably something can be analyzed.
Include ver batum any onscreen error messages you see.

More info needed.
