Should I add RAM, free up more HD space, or something else?
Greetings from a hopeless nontechie!
My PC, a Dell I got a few years ago, slowed down considerably. It's 36
G Hard Drive only had 4 percent of free space. I freed up a
considerable amount and it now has almost 25 percent of free space
(about 8 Gs). This, however, did not really speed up the computer.
Should I increase the RAM from 256 MB to 512 MB? Or is there something
else I should check first?
I know the simplest thing would be for me to get a new computer, but I
have to wait about six months before getting a new one.
Thanks! Tag: backup failure Tag: 1860996

Outlook transfer to Vista
I had to recover my previous hard drive which had a major crash, through the

On my new Vista machine I can see Outlook files and a pst archive but can

outlook onto Vista mail, or can I go back into my old XP hard drive showing
on my Vista and start again and if so, how do I do it.

WinXP pro workgroup roaming username
Hi,
A few days ago I asked a question about managing a system for a school and
got some great advices.
SteadyState was suggested,
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/sharedaccess/default.mspx
As I see it, I need to run the software on all the machine. I would turn the
'Disk protection' to reset all the information on a regular basis, (this
option is offered and is great).
So now all I need is to manage the kids username and password, (we would
like them to be able to use any machine in the workgroup).
We have about 30 computers in the lab for about 700 children, (all the
machines are XP pro).
All the computers are part of the same workgroup.
Where can I find a tutorial to create a new user group that would allow the
kid to log on to any computer on the workgroup and retrieve their profile?
Or do I need a Server to handle this?
Looking at my own computers at home, I can see that both my machines are
part of the same workgroup but I cannot logon from machine A with user B for
example.
How can I manage roaming users in windows XP.
Thanks

Everything highlights
I work in an IT dept and we have an issue that comes up once in a while where
the computer acts like the shift key is stuck down. Basically if they click
on the desktop all icons get highlighted, if they click a specific icon all
icons above the one they click gets selected. If trying to open a word
document or other file, the full file list will get highlighted from the
start of the folder list to the file they clicked on. Then usually while this
happens they can either type normally like nothing is wrong, or they can't
type at all. Is there any settings or ideas out there? I've tried new
keyboards, disabling all accessibility and sticky key options... Tag: backup failure Tag: 1860961

How to Disable Balloon Notifications Without Reboot
We have a manually launched process for initiating Automatic Updates. It is
based on a update script from Microsoft:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa387102.aspx.
One of the requirements to the update process is prevent any pop up balloon
notifications that normally appear when running Windows/Automatic Updates.
We have our own window that updates the client with progress information.
We need to do this without rebooting the computer. The client will reboot if
necessary at the end of the process. We have everything working except
suppressing the balloons without a reboot or logoff/logon. The notifications
can be suppressed using a registry key, see:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307729, or using TweakUI.
Explorer.exe does not pick up on manually changing the registry which is
where the logoff/logon or reboot is needed. When TweakUI makes the change it
also forces explorer.exe to refresh, without killing the process, and the
balloon notification suppression takes place immediately.
We tried using a command from http://www.robvanderwoude.com/rundll.html to
force explorer.exe to refresh and while explorer.exe does re-read the balloon
registry setting it does not make an immediate change.
RUNDLL32.EXE USER32.DLL,UpdatePerUserSystemParameters ,1 ,True
The user interface to Windows/Automatic updates can also be disabled through
a group policy change but again it does not have an immediate effect.
User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows
Update - Remove access to use all Windows Update features
Anyone know how to do what TweakUI does and make the change to suppress
balloon notifications instant? I've searched and cannot find and hits that
reference this. The only requirement is that the option be scriptable from
either a .bat, .cmd, or a .vbs file.
Thank you,

to your computer.
if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your

check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified
in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for
driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Activate Windows on OLD computer, already activated on NEW compute
I recently purchased a new windows xp home edition computer which I am in the
process of transferring data from my OLD xp home edition computer. In
reviewing what is on my old computer, I noticed that the "activate Windows"
option was there ( start, all programs, accessories, system tools, activate
Windows), whereas my NEW computer does not show this option at all.
What is going on here? Is it possible that on my 6 yr old computer windows
was never activated? And somehow it is already activated on my NEW computer?
This of course begs the question "what would happen If I "click" on
"activate windows"?". Does it matter after 6 years?
What about the new computer. How can I check to find out if it is
activated? Is it possible that builder of new computer (Tigerdirect)
activated Windows?
Finally, shouldn't activation info be related to me , the owner of computer?
I find it odd that my old computer (Home shopping network purchased in 2001,
only user) appears to have windows not activated, whereas my new computer
appears to already have windows activated.
I appreciate guidance regarding this somewhat confusing info. Thanks in
advance for all help given, THANKS!! Tag: backup failure Tag: 1860894
Indexing Service
Hi
I am using PerfectDisc 8 to defrag my drives and have had no problems
getting a complete defrag until recently.
I am now regularly getting a fragmented metadata file called
C:\$Extend\$UsnJrnl:$J which I understand relates to the file Indexing System.
Having searched this forum and gleaned some information relating to this, I
have disabled the Indexing Service, unchecked the box in C: Properties so as
to disable file indexing and deleted the file (fsutil.exe usn deletejournal
/D C:) - doing this seemed to get rid of the offending C:\$Extend\$UsnJrnl:$J
file. However, after a re-boot, it reappears.
When I run chkdsk c: /f the result shows the usual data plus an entry
"CHKDSK is verifying the journal.....Usn Journal verification complete".
My Laptop, set up the same as my PC, running the same OS (Windows XP Home)
and most of the software on my PC, does not have this problem.
Can anyone tell me why my PC has the file C:\$Extend\$UsnJrnl:$J file and
not my Laptop, whether it is indeed related to the Indexing Service, why it
keeps reappearing and whether I can get rid of it once and for all.

Browse Large Folder Like Vista
Hi! I have a large folder with over 1,000 folder inside and I would
like to know if there is a way to browse a large folder like you do in
Vista. For example in Vista if I'm browsing a large folder and I hit
back the selection remains on the same folder it was, if I was
browsing the folder 500 of a list of 1,000 and I it back the screen
returns to the same selection. This behavior does not happen in
Windows XP, if I hit back the screen returns to the very first folder
on the list.
Any guess?

Remote Storage Service wont start
I posted an issue yesterday with Backup not starting.
Now I believe the underlying problem to be the Remote Storage Service,
which won't start.
It was set to Automatic but started and stopped immediately. I set it
to Manual (like another machine here) but it still won't start.
I compared the dlls between the two machines and they appear the same.
I believe there is a database (of devices?), which may be the problem.
In Control Panel * Admin * Computer Management, I can't open the tree
Removeable Storage under Storage. It just hangs.
My next thought is to try to fix that. Any ideas?
BTW, do removeable USB devices cause these problems?

not able to reboot
Our desktop Windows XP (Media Center Edition) PC started making an unusual
clicking sound, as if
some network traffic was attempting to access the hard drive. I tried
clicking out of programs that were up at the time, but the mouse arrow had
turned into a cursor bar and wasn't clickable. So I turned off the PC by
holding down the power button.
Upon turning the PC back on, I was led to the black screen that gives
options of restarting normally, in last configuration or in various types of
Safe Modes. None of these options worked. Trying to deploy each simply led to
the Windows XP screen with the bar that shows the program loading, then
another blue screen, then black with the flashing cursor in the upper left.
That led to the black screen with the various startup options again.
Any clues as to what might be going on?

the problem? or is it something else? it doesn't happen all the time, but

Pop-up vs. virus

50something spyware but the anti-root came back clean. However, I still have
a problem somewhere because after I rebooted and logged back in, it wasn't
long til I was at another search FindStuff page. Which is apparently not a
known phlishing or whatever site and I really dont know what else to do.

New to XP!
Hi,
Recently, I graduated to Windows XP from Windows 98 SE. While I really like
98 and have been a loyal Win98 user for many years, I must admit I am very
much enjoying my new Windows eXPerience! I do, however have a few
questions...
First, how can I enable viewing my media files (both music and video) in the
webview pane (in Windows explorer, the left portion of the the screen). I
did this all the time with Windows 98 and I really liked it. It allowed me
to play the music or video file without opening the Windows Media Player main
window. Can this even be done with Windows XP?
Secondly, I'm looking for good power toys for Windows XP SP2. I can't seem
to get TweakUI for Windows XP (I think it's just for SP1). Any good
suggestions? Freebees a must!
Lastly, where can I get free themes and styles for Windows XP? I've seen
some very nice ones which enhance the appearance of XP. But they require me
to apply a patched uxtheme.dll file to my system. How safe is that? Is
there a great safe and free site for adding XP themes and styles?
Thanks in advance!

WinXP sp2 - Framework
I just installed Turbo Tax Deluxe (+ State) 2007 on my desktop (WinXP sp2)

Therefore, if there were any updates to "Framework" (if that is
necessary/possible), I think they would have shown up in the Critical Updates
that I perform every month.
Can anyone 'shed any light' on Framework, etc.? Thank you. Tag: backup failure Tag: 1860700
When i try to backup through the backup wizard it errors out right at the
start. In the report it says catastrophic failure. Any ideas?

MS backup is an application to be avoided.
Best way to backup is to just burn your data directly to cd/dvd
Try checking in the Event Viewer->Applications or system sections found in
the Control Panel->Administrative Tools. Double click items that have a red
X to open an Event Properties windows then click the blue link to see if
Help And Support can shed some light on this.
Oh yeah - get a decent backup program. NTBackup is a POS.

Ditch using Windows backup and download this excellent freeware program:

Nonsense; ntbackup is a fully functional and very useful and stable
utility and will get the job done whether it be a single file or entire
system it backs up. The only real feature it's missing is the ability
to zip or otherwise compress files which to me is a biggie.
OP:
"Catastrophic Failure" I've never seen happen with it. What else does
it say in the report about it? Do you have shadow copy services
turned off? They're needed if the backup includes system files. Got
enough room on the target drive? Pro or Home? Networked? Etc etc.
Post the errored part of the report and a few lines before/after it
and it's probably something can be analyzed.
Include ver batum any onscreen error messages you see.
