Command Line command for Start>Run and Regional Settings
Hi, on some workstations we have a lock down for certain users as to
what access they can have for applications. When I go with an admin
to change settings it only applies to my profile, and is difficult to
keep having to logoff a user and logon again. I have created a batch
script to get to a command line, is there an exe command for control
panel>region settings and start>run that I can run from a command
line?

Firewall question
For some years I have had a LAN with four computers at home, based on a
DLink DSL504T modem/router also providing access to the Internet. With the
kids all grown up and gone now-a-days I decided to simplify everything. My
one remaining machine now connects to the Internet via a SmartAX ADSL2+
MT882 modem using the ethernet port.
The old DLink had a hardware firewall built in, and I also ran a software
firewall on each individual computer. My question is, now with a firewall
also in
the new modem, and no LAN any more, do I really need a software firewall on
my single machine as well any more? I am running Windows XP SP3 with the
Windows firewall enabled at present.
Many thanks for any advice offered.

List of Programs that will or won't work with XP Pro SP2 ?
I bought XP Pro Upgrade and am considering upgrading my Win98 SE PC.
I need to know which of my programs will or won't work. I found an
area on the MS site but only found one, MS Office 97, and it needs a
free upgrade. I can use Works instead.
I could not find Front Page 2000, Quicken 99, Photo Shop 6,
Greeting Card Deluxe 3 and some others.
Is there a list somewhere that's easy to access?
I could install them on my XP Pro Notebook to see if they work but
that will be involved. I want to use the PC for the important stuff
anyway.
Would appreciate any suggestions.

Deleted Folder Keeps Reappearing
I have a folder on my desktop that just had two pictures in it, that
once no longer needed, I deleted. However, whenever I restart, the
folder with pictures inside reappears!
I've moved them to other folders, and again - it reappears after a
restart. I even deleted the folder with a supposed 'forever eraser'
program that supposedly overwrites the data a thousand billion times -
but, yes, you guessed it - it still reappears after a restart.
Anybody know the cure for this and could explain why this is
happening?
Thanks in advance!

Restore Point - Need Help With Antivirus xp 2008 virus
I have the antivirus xp 2008. One microsoft discussion group suggested that
one easy way of getting rid of this monster is to go to system tools and
create a new system restore point and then restore the system. I tried to do
this but the only highlited system restore date for the month of august was
today's day at a time after my computer became infected. Is it possible to
set another resore point even though no other dates in august are highlited.
This virus is reaking disaster on my computer.

How to Use Folder Shortcuts to Jump to Specific Folders While Savi
I recently needed to reinstall my operating system. It was before and is now
Windows XP. I have created folder shortcuts so that when I save I can "jump"
to a folder deeper within my directory structure that I use often. I had
several of these shortcuts and they worked splendidly. Now that I have
reinstalled Windows XP, I can jump to the desired directories using the
shortcuts while exploring, but when I try to do so while saving the folder
shortcuts do not appear. How can I use folder shortcuts to "jump" to specific
folders within my directory structure while saving? Thanks.

XP, SP3 - Office 97-Word Print problem
Windows XP, SP3.
All Updates and patches as offered to date installed.
Today being August 31, 2008
HP USB port printer CS3100 series.
I have licensed copies of Word 2002 on this system as well as an older
version of Office 97 that includes Word, Access, Power Point, and the
rest.
Well... recently Word 97 has ceased printing. When you commit
something to print, it is sent to the printer queue but just sits
there. When we look at the printer spool queue it says "spooling" and
does nothing.
At the same time I was having a problem printing from Word 2002 but
learned that there may be a problem with the "normal" template. After
resetting the normal template on 2002 I was able to print again no
problem. However doing the same to Word 97 is not correcting the
problem.
I also tried reinstalling Office 97 (Word 97 Module) from the
installer CD to no avail.
Now, I can print from my web browser, Notepad, word pad, etc and also
from Word 2002. I can also print from the other Office 97 modules
such as Power Point, Excel, and the rest. Just Word 97 won't print.
I was wondering if SP3 which was recently installed may have inhibited
Word 97 in some way? I can open Word 97 and use it to create a
document and save it. However when it is saved it receives an icon
for word 2002 (expected) and next time I open it by double-clicking
that file icon, it will open with Word 2002.
I'd like to still be able to use Word 97 to open, save, and print docs
when I want, and as noted, until recently I was able to do that.
Oh yes... I recently also downloaded the converter modules from
Microsoft so I can open and use docX files created in Word 2007 on
Vista machines. Anything there to be concerned with?
For what its worth, I have a Windows 2000 networked and share the
printer on the XP machine. Form the Windows 2000 machine I can print
from both Word 2002 and Word 97, so it is clearly not the printer.
Open to suggestion on a fix if there is any.
Thanks

No audio device detected
Greetings all,
My system includes:
ECS P4M800PRO-M motherboard
Intel Dual core P4 3GHz processor
4GB Kingston DDR2 533MHz memory
BFG 7800GS video card
Windows XP Professional with SP3 installed
Originally a SBLive! 5.1 sound card
Also tried a CompUSA "CMedia CMI8738/C3DX based" 5.1 sound card (which is
currently still installed)
After downloading and installing a couple of "optional" software updates
from the windows update site, my system started crashing to a HALT and Memory
Dump screen.
I did a "Repair" re-installation of my Windows XP Professional. Installed
SP3 and all "necessary" updates from the Windows update web site. Also I
downloaded and installed the latest motherboard chipset drivers.
Motherboard drivers from the (ECS) manufacturer's website
VIA Service Pack (4 in 1) v 5.07
VIA USB 2.0 Host Controller Driver v 2.44
I have not installed the On-board audio driver nor the SATA RAID driver
since I do not use either of them, they are disabled in the BIOS settings..
When my system finally rebooted to the desktop and I was checking for broken
software links, I found that the Windows 'Sound and Audio Devices' applet in
the Control Panel did not recognize that I had a sound card installed. Under
the Devices tab it had my SBLive! series sound device listed as being
installed. Also, Device Manager showed that the SBLive! series device was
installed and working properly.
I tried reseating the sound card, deleting the sound card with Device
Manager and redetecting it. The sound card system driver and joystick port
were reinstalled but still not recognized as installed in the Control Panel's
'Sound and Audio Devices' applet. (I also tried moving the soundcard to a
different PCI slot.)
I then tried deleting the SBLive! 5.1 card and Creative joystick port and
replacing it with a CompUSA 5.1 sound card (C-Media CMI8738/C3DX).
The driver and application software seemed to install with no problems from
the Install CD. After the required reboot, the Control Panel's 'Sound and
Audio Devices' applet still did not recognize that a sound card was
installed. Under the devices tab it has the CMI8738/C3DX device listed as
being installed. Also Device Manager shows that the CMI8738/C3DX device is
installed and working properly. I downloaded the manufacturer's latest device
driver and installed it; with the same results.
Sound card drivers are from the (CMedia) manufacturer's recommended
dowload site www.Download.com
CMI8738_WDM_0639XP v 5.12.1.639
I tried running DXdiag.exe. It recognizes the sound card as being installed
and reported no errors. When I ran the sound tests, all the DX sound tests
passed.
I started up Windows Media Player and I can hear sounds being played by it.
I do hear sounds in the couple of online games that I have tried and think
that is because they are using the DirectSound drivers.
Also, the problem with the sound card not being recognized occured before I
installed SP3.
Does anyone know what might have gone wrong?
Any help in getting one of my sound cards to be recognized by WinXP would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

Windows not starting up completely, no start menu, no task manager
Had a virus attack and have cleaned it using McAfee including a full scan in
DOS safe mode. No infected files are on the disk based on the scans. When
I start the PC in â??normal modeâ?? the desktop displays but the start menu nor
the task bar display. Even when I use the windows key. Right clicks on the
desk top do not work. I normally do not have icons on my desktop so I do
not know if other programs work.
In the safe mode I have attempted to run
windows explorer and the system says in can not find explorer.exe even though
I can see it in the windows directory using the DOS dir command.
I have attempted to do the sfc /scannow process but got the following error
message "windows file protection could not initiate a scan of protected
system files.
The specific error code is 0x000006ba (The RPC server is unavailable.].
I have reviewed what is running in the Task Manager and notice that
explorer.exe is not running and expect it has something to do with the fact
the system can't find explorer.exe for some reason.
Not sure where to go from here.

70 yr old needs help - reactivating XP
Wife and I are going to the States for 50th wedding aniversary. We are going
to drive from Los Angeles to Washington. We intend to take a old IBM laptop
and use it to download videos onto. Trouble was that it was rather full of
programs which, although I deleted as many as I could, did not give enough
space on the hard disk. The original XP operating system is held in a hidden
sector on the hard disk but I didn't know how to get to it. What I wanted to
do was to format the disk and then reinstall the OS. However I couldn't do it
so I took it to the local "Guru" who done it for me.
When I switched it on I was asked to "actviate" the software. When I went to
input the activation code, which is on the bottom of the computer, it would
not take it. Specifically I could not input the letter "O" or the number "O"
(zero). I can input these in other programs, eg: Wordpad , etc, but they just
do not appear when I try to input them into the activation wizard.
Not being sufficiently computer wise, I am asking help from any of
Knowledge Army that supports this forum and would appreciate any suggestions.
Many thanks - Tony Evans (England) Tag: baby Tag: 1934948

Micrsoft Virtual PC backup image of my C: hard drive
Hello NG!
I haven't found an other more specific NG on the question I want to ask. That's why
I'm going to ask my question here.
Can I restore an image of my pc with Microsoft Virtual PC so I'll find everything
as I left it?
I know it's said to function but I hardly can think it's true. I have reinstalled
Window several times after hard drive failures or on new computers as well.
I made backups of my files and I'm also familiar with restoring these files. Only thing
are program settings I had to restore manually, which was getting tiring today (
due to the number of programs installed ).

Much quicker than when i turn it off in the conventional way.
Since in hibernation, i cannot hear the cooling fan running; does that mean

If that's the case, would there be any reason *never* to switch it off in

SP3 changing OE Newsreader settings?
Hi there,
Having held off SP3 for a while until the dust settled I thought I would
update all my computers.
All seemed to go well apart from my main machine (isn't it always the way:-)
where I rebooted and I saw the 'Setting up Outlook Express Preferences' or
something similar.
Why would SP3 want to do that?
I see now my customised toolbar has defaulted back to something else and I
don't know what else may have changed.
So...why did SP3 decide to change my OE Settings and more importantly what
exactly did it change apart from the toolbar that I can see?

I am sure the fix works since it did the trick for XP many times.. but it

Is there another version of this fix for vista or what is the work around to

Slow XP Startup & Login Since Media Player 11 Installation?
Hi,
I'm running a Dell Latitude D830, 3gb ram, 2.6Ghz Centrino, and
Windows XP SP3. The machine usually boots, and logs on to the point
where you can begine to run programs, in under 2 minutes.
Friday I decided to upgrade to Media PLayer 11, (because I was fed up
with it nagging me to upgrade). I performed the upgrade, and rebooted.
However, since the upgrade, bootup now takes about 5 minutes, with
Windows hanging at the 'running startup scripts' screen, then once
you've entered your username/password, login takes another 5 minutes,
with Windows just displaying the standard background, and nothing
else. You can't even ctrl+alt+del to bring up task manager to see
whats happening in the backgroup. There doesn't seem to be any disk
activity, at least the disk light on the laptop isn't flashing, it
just seems to hang.
Eventually when you do get to the desktop and try to run a program, it
just hangs again, launching IE7 just took me 2 minutes from clicking
the icon, to it actually opening, and it seems to be about the same
for other programs.
I have run WMP11 on this laptop previously, with WinXP, (ended up
formatting due to another reason) without any issues.
Can anyone suggest why WMP11 might cause this problem, or how to fix
it? I'm just about to install BootLogXP and reboot again, to try and
see whats running at startup that might be causing this issue.
Many thanks

New XP Disc still crashes
I submitted a question about two weeks ago
I was getting blue screen errors
bad pool header
windows has revcovered from a serious error
CHDSK errors were appearing
I reinstalled windows XP and receved the same errors. I then ordered new
recovery disks and installed them last week.
For days the system worked fine. Today I am getting the same error messages,
constant shut downs, blue screen errors, system hanging up.
Hour glass freezing, internet explorer shutting down every 3 minutes. bad
pool header messages etc. Also the wireless network cannot be found at tmes
and says no networks in range while another laptop in the same room works.
when I tried to play videos it completely shut down.
I formatted the disk on the same partition upon installation. The only other
symptom I had previously noticed was the laptop does overheat at times. I
have to run it near a fan. Any ideas?
I did once last reinstall today, and received the same errors on a fresh
installation with the new disks. Tag: baby Tag: 1934880

Keyboard Mystery
I have an IBM laptop running XP Pro, where the keyboard does not seem to
work (in regular windows mode) - no key works at all.
However, when I go to Device Manager, the keyboard does not report any
errors; when I run PC-Doctor (which is a part of the supplied IBM
diagnostics) it reports no errors and indeed the keyboard works just fine
for navigation and option selection. In fact, when the laptop boots up, it
requires a log-in password and the keyboard works perfectly to enter the
password. This leads me to think that keyboard per se is not defective.
Once it has booted however, the keyboard becomes totally non-responsive.

Error in Microsoft Update - Administrators Only
Hi
I get the following error on Windows XP x64 Professional when I try to do a
Microsoft update. I tried to run Microsoft update by right clicking on the
update program. Here I selected 'Run as', and unchecked 'Run this program
with restricted access.

Administrators Only
To install items from Windows Update, you must be logged on as an
administrator or a member of the Administrators group. If your computer is
connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from
completing this procedure.
Note If you are running a Windows 2000 (except DataCenter), Windows XP, or
Windows Server 2003 operating system, you can run the local administrator
account on your computer without having to log off and then log on again.
To run as the local administrator in Windows XP or Windows Server 2003:
Click Start, and then click All Programs (or right-click Windows Update if
it is available).
Right-click Windows Update.
Click Run as on the menu that appears.
Do one of the following:
Enter the password for the administrator.
Enter the user name, domain name, and password of a different user account
that has administrative permissions on this computer.
To run as the local administrator in Windows 2000:
Click Start, right-click Windows Update, and then click Run As on the menu
that appears.
Do one of the following:
Enter the password for the administrator.
Enter the user name, domain name, and password of a different user account
that has administrative permissions on this computer.
If the option to run as the local administrator is not available:
Click Start, right-click Windows Update, and then click Properties.
Click the Shortcut tab, and then select the Run as different user check box.
-End-
I tried the following; still the error persists!
-Start-
1. Click "Start," and then click "Run."
2. In the Open box, type regedit and then click "OK."
3. Locate and select the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate
4. click "Edit," and then click "Permissions."
5. Click "Add," and then type "Everyone" in the
dialog box that appears.
6. Click "Check Names," and then click "OK."
7. Select "Everyone" in the "Group or user names" list.
8. Under Permissions for "Everyone," select the "Full Control" check box
in the "Allow" column. Note that the "Read" check box in the "Allow"
column is now also selected.
9. Select each user, in turn, in the "Group or user names" list, and then

that no check boxes are selected in the "Deny" column. Clear any check
boxes that are selected in the "Deny" column.
10. Click "Advanced," and then select the "Replace permission entries on all
child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects" check box,

Starting applications on a maximized window
Some applications can't be started with its windows maximized, requiring a
mouse click or keyboard shortcut (that is not always the same, since it
changes with the language of the OS). Someone knows of a method, like a
small portable freeware application, to create a command line that starts an
application maximized?
Try to start the Microsoft Computer Management Console maximized
(compmgmt.msc).
Thanks to everyone! Tag: baby Tag: 1934831
Slightly Off-topic but not way off?
I have a Sony Vaio PCGFXA 47 notebook with WindowsXP sp3. The computer came
with Recovery cds and not a WindowsXP cd. So there was no Recovery Console
originally with my computer. However about 6 months ago I was at this website
http://www.aumha.org/ and there was a procedure in a thread outlining the
steps to installing the Recovery Console on any WindowsXP computer. I
followed the procedure and I now have the Recovery Console listed as a boot
option on my Boot.ini file.
A few weeks ago i deleted Screenblast Sounforge&Acid;
Photoshop Elements; and WinDVD from their default install locations on my
C:\drive so I could make a smaller image to burn. These programs are OEM to
my computer. Anyways after burning the image i wanted to reinstall those
programs so I put in the Application Recovery cd to do so but was given the
message "This application is not designed to run on this computer". So I
could not install the programs. My question is this: Did my installing either
SP3 or The Recovery Console cause this effect?
I know this isn't specifically a Windows XP question but
some of you posters here might have insight to whether this could be the
case. I know one thing

External Dail-Up USB-to-Serial Modem Hangs and Requires Reboot To Fix
I have an external serial modem that is run through a serial-to-USB
converter.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16825134002
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812107956

It will occationally hang, and the the only way to get back control of the
modem is to reboot the computer. When I query to modem from the control
panel, it says: "The port that the modem is using is currently open by
another application. Exit any application that may currently be using the
port."
I don't know what could be causing the problem. I have tried disabling all
other needless applications that run in the background, but that is still
no change.
Anybody got any ideas of other things that I can try? Tag: baby Tag: 1934807
Problem creating User account
As the computer administrator on my PC, I created a new limited User account.
However, when I tried to open up this new account, I got a small window
saying Personal Settings. Setting up Internet settings. (Or words to that
effect.) An hourglass appeared. This continued for about 5 minutes with no
change. I then rebooted the PC and tried to open the new account again, with
the same result.
Can someone explain why the new account will not set up properly? Thank you.

Do I have a Virus? Shutdown problem
Hi every one,
I've been experiencing a weird problem with my computer recently. When I
turn off my computer, the light on my monitor will go from green to the
orange standby state and the computer will shutdown normally. But after 60 to
90 seconds, my monitor light turns on green again and the power 'on' light on
the front of my tower flickers really fast as if the computer was turning on
and off and on... I can also see the fan at the back of the computer turning.
Any idea? I my computer corrupted?
thanks,

Auto Restart on Standby
Hello, All!
Anytime I put my machine on Standby it goes into Standby and then
immediately comes out of Standby. Any thoughts as to why this would occur?
Is there some setting I'm missing?
Thanks,
