    - Memory USB Kingston My PC doesn't recognize a Memory USB Kingston. I tested this Memory USB Kingston in another PC that runs Debian and it is recognized.     - Drive issues, Reinstall XP on second drive, " Access Denied" NTSF Unfortunately, a major thunderstorm passed thru my area and my computer was shut down hard (I do have a Surge protector - not sure why it was not effective) and when I brought it up Windows was trashed, Missing system files, some noise about disk-drive errors, blue screen of death after windows logo screen loads A bunch of stuff, etc. So I had to install Windows on another drive on the system. Accessing the Drive with issues: I can copy files from anywhere on the drive to the new windows drive except for "my documents" WEHRE OF COURSE Visual Studio Projects, Word documents, IPod, etc, all my important stuff is being kept being kept. When I try this I get is "Access is denied" When I bring the system up in Safe Mode with networking and look at the security permission tab for the documents folder, I see that my SID Is not in the permissions list. When I try and add it (my user SID) XP validates it and it looks like I can now have access to it, great, but when I click apply the response is "media is write protected" cannot apply permission changes. Additionally when I try and copy anything from the new Windows drive to the problem one I get "Media is protected" "Access denied" messages. Tried a couple of things: Try to defrag it from new windows - same message: Media is protected" "Access denied" Try to repair it from new windows - same message: Media is protected" "Access denied" I have also tried CACLS using the following - from DOS/Prompt positioned one level up D:>\Documents and Settings> cacls greg (greg the sub directory) Response: D:>\Documents and Settings> NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:F NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:<OI><CI><IO>F <Account Domain not found>F <Account Domain not found><OI><CI><IO>F WHEN I try the following: D:> cacls "D\documents and settings" /T /E /C /G "Greg Cost":F response 1: are you sure? response 2: The media is write protected Its not like damage (maybe) it's almost like the drive in question still has permissions from the now defunct XP system and the new XP system can't quite figure out how to change it for usage. Keep in mind that I am able to copy files from it except the original MY Documents.     - RAM size Hello, I kept getting these errors in Windows xp, rebooting and blue screen etc. I found out my 512k memory card was bad, so i was only left with the 256 k card. so i bought 2 kingston pc2700 ddr333 (crucial.com says this is the size that will work), but actually received 2 pc2100 ddr266 (kingston.com says this is the size that will work) whatver the case may e they should both work. Windows says I am running 1 gig like normal, but the speed doesnt seem faster than the 768 i was running before. ANyway, the memory tests i run online ALL say I have 512k, and only 1 slot is being used. I tried both cards, in both slots, and each card alone, and each card with my 256, and every time, it staes only one slot is filled and 512k. Is this a windows error the scan is picking up. Is there something in windows that will show me the ACTUAL ram i have and ACTUAL htat is being used. I may have 1 gig like windows says, but is it possible only 512 is being used ?     - Desktop - strange behaviour? Hi .. When I do something simple, like empty my Recycle Bin, or maybe close a window and go back to desktop, many of the Desktop Icons seem to do a refresh, for a few seconds they display what I would call a "default Icon" until the normally assigned icons reappears. It wouldn't be so bad but sometimes it takes a while for this to finish (seconds maybe but I cant move my mouse until it finishes). Once the correct icons have been "repainted" all then is OK once more. Is this normal? Is there anyway to correct this..if it is incorrect behaviour. I'm running XPPro SP3, but behaviour occurred on SP2 also..... I don't use Active Desktop or whatever its called, I don't have a background image, only a plain colour from the palette.     - Uninstalling app correctly Just quick question how to uninstall Gmer utility correctly: it installs gmer.exe, gmer.dll, gmer.sys, gmer.ini, gmer_uninstall.cmd files. For uninstalling, there was specified to run C:\WINDOWS\gmer_uninstall.cmd script and reboot. The gmer_uninstall.cmd script contains code: sc delete gmer del system32\drivers\gmer.sys del gmer.dll del gmer.exe pause I done, this open dos prompt with info.     - Strange behavior in Windows XP 64-bit Edition I just installed my favorite launcher program, TurboLaunch, on my new quad core system with Win XP 64-bit, and noticed some strange behavior. I tried to add the icon for Computer Management to it, but it could not see the executable file. I checked with Windows Explorer, and the file pointed to by the Start menu shortcut exists (compmgmt.msc), but TurboLaunch can't see it. After coming across this with another program, nVidia's RAID manager program, NvRaidMan.exe, I've come to think that 32-bit programs can't see certain files in C:\Windows\system32. I've temporarily worked around this by copying the files I want to run via TurboLaunch into another folder. This seems to work; the programs start up and seem to work ok. Is this behavior expected?     - Username/password on network share I realize there have been many threads on this subject, but I just can't track my problem down. Have small office network (workgroup). On win2000 desktop I have shared folder(ESHARE). I want 4 users to have access to this. set up new users with same Username/Password on win2000 desktop as each logs onto there own laptop/pc. Usernames on win2000 desktop are all in POWERUSER group with full access to ESHARE. All get access to ESHARE without having to enter Username/Password except one XP home laptop which always asks for Username/Password.     - Can't remame photo files on my camera phone I wanted to download some photos I took this morning onto my pc from my camera phone. I usually put the phonecard into the slot in my pc, choose what pics i want, rename them and either move or, if I want to keep them on the phone, copy them onto my computer. When I just tried to do it, I got an error message saying if I change a file extention name it may not work properly. I copied one and tried renaming it just to see what happens and I instead of it showing as a jpeg icon that will open with Windows fax and picture viewer, I get a funny icon that just says "file" when I look at properties. I can open it but I have to manually select the prog. to open it with ( picture viewer) and there is no way I can find of setting the programme I want it to open with as default. What I can't udnerstand is why I'm suddenly getting a message about file extentions, why it won't let me remane as normal and what on earth I can do about it to get back to being able to rename as usual and save photos with a new name on both card and pc. I'm left with a situation where I can save and copy my pictures as usual from the phonecard but I can't rename them without them becomming converted into something else that involves manually selecting the programme to open it with for each individual photo.     - Windows Explorer & Start Menu Windows Explorer is normally found on the Start Menu under Programs>Accessories>Windows Explorer. I accidentally "dragged and dropped" Windows Explorer from the Accessories Menu to the desktop. Now I have a great shortcut, but Windows Explorer is no longer part of the Accessories Menu list.     - XP can only boot in safe mode OK guys. I have a pretty newish computer and tried installing xp pro sp2 to it. and the installer said everything went fine. Well when it booted up it went to the splash screen and rebooted. and did a couple more times. So I loaded up in safe mode and tried installing sp3 just seeing if that may over ride the problemed file. Nope. So I rebooted and tried to load into safe mode with networking. and that made my computer reboot as well. And I've tried reinstalling it and the same stuff happens. So yes. Ideas? Im thinking its some kind of network driver issue. Just a fyi: im funning 2gbs ram 3ghz dual core amd64 x2 and i totally forget what my network card & mobo are so ill post that up later.     - Windows XP Pro Sp3 won't shut down This dell system is just out of the box and upgraded from SP2 to SP3 with users set up. When you log in as a user name it will not shut down or logoff without holding in the power button unless you are in safe mode.     - xcopy /z does nothing!!!! I am finding that the /Z switch on xcopy has no effect. It works on Copy - copy /z I am aware of what it does, and how it works. I have used it with Copy. Can anybody else see either - the same problem with xcopy on their machine ? - that it does have an effect on their machine ?     - shutting down applying patches issue When Windows XP Professional shuts down and there are patches to apply it states applying patch 1 of 15 and that you should not turn off the computer... It appears as if it only applies one patch and then turns off by itself. The next time I boot up and then shut down it says 1 of 14. Does anyone know why ir's only applying one patch?     - Shadow Copy is not enabled I have shadow copy enabled on my 2003 Server but for some reason I can not get this to work on my XP Pro computer. I had to change Volume Showdow Service from Manual to Automatic and I was able to start the service. After a reboot the service is running. I have also installed the Showdow Client Software. I am unable to get an option for "Configure Shadow Copy" to appear under all task in Computer Managment/System tools/Shared Folders. All that appears under "All Task is "Send Console Message" I have searched for hours on the web and on Microsoft Site and I have not been able to find a solution for this.     - internet connection with comcast Maybe someone on this group can help me. I had been using att/ sbcyahoo wireless on my dell laptop running windows xp. My husband is using comcast and I want to now connect with comcast. I get the signal ok but I cannot connect to the internet. I'm not all that tech savvy so I'm having a bit of trouble.     - Question on OEM license and Virtual Machines Hi All, I am going to be installing XP as a virtual machine (VM) on an existing Linux server. License wise, Uncle Bill wants a separate XP license for each XP VM. He also does not want us to sell XP OEM without also selling a new computer with it. Question: license wise, does a "new" VM constitute a "new" computer? Or, do I need to sell the full "retail" version of XP? (If it is considered a "gray area", I'll just go with the retail version.)     - printer problem after sp3 I have 3 machines on a network, 2 XP and 1 Vista. XP sp3 was installed on the 2 machines both machines printed no problem before sp3, now only one will print to my Brother HL 2040 connected to the Vista machine (Vista machine still prints). Nothing else has been changed except the addition of sp3. I've checked the usual firewall settings and printer settings. All of my other shared files are still accessible.     - error after startup I sporadically get this error â??The instruction at "0x7c91b1fa" referenced memory at "0x00000010". The memory could not be "written" either at startup or a minute or so after log into my profile. Anybody have a clue as to what is causing this and a remedy to fix it. We have several users who recieve the error of "Cannot update your roaming profile" when they log off. They all have proper permissions and no netlogon or computer browser events are occurring simultaneously. It will show you the hops ( from your PC to the destination ) and may help diagnose why the bookstore won't load.     - SP3 uninstall question My Dell XP was on SP1. Had to reinstall Windows. Chose to do so to SP3. Used Dell reinstall CD and thereafter Microsoft/Windows Update. Works perfectly. Now, may have to consider uninstalling SP3 in order to install a Sony camcorder program which is SP2. Enquiring via retailer if program OK with SP3 (Sony website not mention SP3, at all: why not?). Meantime, I see in Add/Remove I can uninstall SP3 there. My question is - if I do so, and bearing in mind I reinstalled Windows to SP3, will the uninstall take me back to SP2? Might there be problems there? The reinstall was traumatic, and I don't want to reinstall Windows again if I can possibly avoid it. Advice/comments?     - Carry the profile data from one PC to another I usually carry a user profile data from one PC to another by simply copy the specific user "tree" (while I'm logged in as administrator account in safe mode) and then restarting the PC. Now I try to do it again with some other PC(I must use this user because of many installations that I've done with it) but the user name is not identical. So I modified the name in the following procedure: May computer->Properties->manage->Local Users and Groups , into an identical name. To my surprise I saw that the profile name under "C:\Documents and Settings" didn't change as I expected. Can someone advise how should I proceed ?     - Volume fragmentation Two hard drives, 80GB and 160GB. 1st HDD contains operating system, program files, many files, and intensively used for 4 years, 2nd HDD(160G) is new, used just few months and contains jonly files. When analyze for volumes fragmentation, it is shown that I do not need to defragment C: volume: Free space: 45%, total fragmentation - 3%, File fragmentation - 6%. But when analyze 2nd volume(160GB), it show that I should defragment this volume: Total Fragmentation - 20%, File Fragmentation - 41%,though Free space - 97%. Why the 2nd volume so deeply fragmented, whereas it have Free space 97%? Should I ingnore analyze and there is no needs to defragment 2nd volume? Thanks.     - Moving files on your computer I have a real basic simplistic understanding of how files are saved/stored on your hard drive. I understand about how they are broken down and stored in clusters and how that information is written to the File Allocation Table so those files don't get over written by new files. I understand how a deleted file, even though it no longer shows up in any folder is still physically present on your harddrive until at some unknown point in time it gets over written. But I have been pondering something for a while and thought I'd ask the experts..... Lets say I have a file on my computer. Now I drag/drop that file from Folder A to Folder B. Is that files physical location on the harddrive simply updated in the FAT or do I end up with 2 copys of the file, one which shows up in the new location, and one which does not appear in either floder, but is none the less still physically present on my harddrive?     - Keyboard key reassignment? I have a very embarrassing question... Is it possible to reasign the keys one a keyboard? I spilled some water on it, and now some of the keys are mis-assigned. For example, here is me typing the numbers one through zero using the keys at the top of the keypad: 1,2,83,54,5,7,7,8,9,0 Yes, that was a single keypress in sequence. And no I have no idea why the number eight also showed up when I pressed three. My spacebar also got mis-assigned. Instead of space, it opens a search window now.     - problem with xp and large drive i have a strange problem with xp and my additional drive i recently bought. i was running vista for a while and just couldn't deal with it anymore so decided to go back to xp. i have the original 250gb drive and added a 1tb drive. when i installed xp it saw the 1tb drive as D and worked fine. i started to install my drivers, first with the latest nvidia drivers for my video. it installed fine, but after the reboot i nearly freaked out when D was gone. it didn't see the drive at all. subsequent reboots did not show the drive in device manager at all. i started over again with fresh xp install and after it finished D was there again. i installed sp3 and after the reboot, D was again gone. i installed xp a third time and D was there. this time i did nothing except a reboot and again D was gone. one thing that's interesting, every time the system would boot after the initial install finished and D wouldn't appear, the boot process took excessively long (nearly 5 min). i can't make sense of it. if it was a matter of xp never seeing the drive, i can see the possibility of a driver isse, 48 bit lba support etc. but when the drive can't be seen after the second boot following initial install, that doesn't make too much sense to me (bios always sees the drive). i ended up going back to vista (for now) and no issues accessing the 1tb drive. system is hp pavilion a1630n purchased end of 2006. any ideas why this could be happening?     - Standby Status (Sleep Mode) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I generally do not turn off my computer (XP SP3) at night - I put it into standby mode and it fires up very quickly in the morning to exactly where I left it the night before - with one exception. Frequently, I am unable to print after coming out of standby mode. The print job is in the printer queue and the printer is active and online when I check its status in control panel. If I reboot the computer, the jobs start printing automatically as soon as bootup completes.     - XP system restore - cannot restore, so now what? I very rarely use the system restore feature, but of course it's a godsend when I do. Last night, I inadvertantly cleaned up some desktop icons I didn't wish to, so I figured I'd just do a restore to that morning's restore point to put my desktop back the way it was. So the standard stuff happened, then upon restart, I got the message saying "Cannot restore. No changes have been made to your system" The only "cure" I'm aware of for this is to disable system restore, then re-enable it. Which is fine, but what if I really really really needed a restoration? Again, in this case, it's not a life or death thing; I was restoring for a cosmetic fix. Questions: 1. What causes system restores to not work? In my case, I can be very sure it's not viruses or malware. I'm a safe computing person, and the system is regularly cleanly scanned for such threats. The only time I've ever seen this happen before was when I had a bad physical sector on the disk of an older computer. 2. Is there a way to use the system restore data I have to somehow "restore" my system, independent of the system restore utility? 3. Other than doing an occasional pointless "set a restore point, then immediately restore to that point," is there any way to ensure that my system restore capabilities are intact? Why doesn't XP warn that something is wrong with this capability? 4. Any trick other than the disable system restore, then re-enable it, that I can try to reinstitute system restore functionality?     - Are the Net framework 1.1 install files stuffed or something I managed to slipstream Net framework 1.1 and 2 (with updates). Only thing is, in add/remove programs it said 1.1 maybe corrupt. I thought installing Net framework 2 corrupted the 1.1 install. So, to test this, I removed the NF 2 files, and installed the 1.1 files. Same thing happened. Is there a trick to installing Net framework 1.1 or something??     - Windows seems slow recently, sound stutters etc. I don't know what has happened but it is running like a dog. It takes longer to boot up seemingly. It seems to other performance probs too, the mouse pointer is 'sticky' and it stutters playing music, or maybe video but it is very noticable on sound. Even when the cpu is 'idle' supposedly. There seems to be a mismatch between the cpu usage bar in the system tray and the cpu in task manager, but that my be due to delays betwen the two perhaps. I have been mesing about with it recently, I installed ubuntu to my second drive. I aslo took the page file off that drive, but I have put it back now - not difference, does it need a reboot to take effect? I also opened the multi channel sound manager, I have never used that before but was curious, I don't recall making any changes. I also installed the latest AVG free, I have the link scanner diabled now. I killed off most/all of the avg stuff and that seemed to make no difference. I had also been transfering data off another drive by putting it on as slave, I got the jumper setting wrong a few times resulting in error, and no boot, but when I got the setting right it was OK. One of the drives I tried was dead previously in another machine, I tried in this this one to see it it was justthe other machine it would not work in. (it seems a gonna). I also put in a network card (ethernet 10/100) which I thought was dead, it didn't seem to show up in device manager so I took it out. Another thing I did was to change my conection from the computer to cable modem from USB to ethernet port. Some of this involved using the network set up wizard. This always seems to finish with an error (unspecified) Any ideas chaps? Could be a lot of red herrings there, I will try and undo a lot of the 'stuff' I have done. It's not too bad really but music sounds bad with stuttering, so noticable. Any ideas diognostics? Windows XP SP2 on sempron 3000 1.2 gig ram, 80 and 250 gig drives 25 and 85 gig free respectively. I accidentally set my camera and scanner window to go to Wrod every time I
connect my camera to transfer photos. And I checked to not ask me again. So I
am stuck with Word, which is useless for storing photos.
I want to be able to transfer and store my photos in My Pictures file like I
used to. And do it with minimal effort like I used to be able to do when the
camera and scanner window would come up each time I CONNECTED MY CAMERA, that
allowed me choices. I guess that was/ is the default way.
I am somehow unable to reset my laptop to a previous date to undo this
change that I made- which is now eveidently permanent so far.
If anyone can instruct me how to getthe computer back to the default setting
whaere the camera and scanner window comes up when I connect my camera- I
will GREATLY appreciate it!
