SP3 is now available through Windows Update. I just finished. Took almost
an hour. It seems to be working fine.

Of course, now that XP is more robust than it's ever been, dare I say,
almost to the point of pefection -

...oh dear | end of product life cycle | ....look at our lovely new Vista
!!!

...I somehow don't think so ! I can remember hanging on to 98se for as long
as possible but, once MS had abandoned it, it seemed to get so old, so very
fast. I have a suspicion that Vista is looming overhead !

I skipped all that ME stuff (thank god). I'm wondering if XP is so
good, and good to what 2014?, that I might skip Vista and get the next
generation.

I installed Vista partly out of curiosity but mainly so I could help
some friends who bought computers that it can preinstalled on.
My installation of SP1 was accomplished without issue.

I like it so much that I imaged XP (with SP3) "just in case" and am
now using Vista with SP1 exclusively. Besides, my laptop has XP on it
and it's still nice and perky (installed SP3 on that without a problem
too).

Thats and idea. I have a DELL that has an OEM XP MCE on it. So I could
leave it alone with SP3 now, and upgrade my Retail copy of XP to Vista.
My office bought a copy to verify our software we write, and I kinda
liked it. It has some glitches, but it has some bells. I can just
keep the retail XP Pro for backup. Yes, might Image it!

Its food for thought. I would like to play with it at home more.

Boy that's was a confusing sentence. I meant to say my Desktop has a
retail copy of xp and that could be updated to XP.
I know, either could be, but I hate to monkey with the OEM verion. It
works so nice and I LOVE my laptop.

My XP license is Upgrade. I bought a retail version of Vista from
royaldiscount.com ($123 for 32-bit) so that I wouldn't have to tie up
that license.

I clean installed on the IDE slave drive (I can boot to whichever
drive via the BIOS) and played with it until I was sure that I liked
it before I archived XP.

I downloaded the SP3 update from Softpedia and it's worked in three XP
systems. On my system though, I had to reset my internet connection by
following the prompts on IE7. The other two computers took the update
without any problems at all. I did notice some slowdown right after the
update but that goes away, you might have to reboot.
