I just installed Turbo Tax Deluxe (+ State) 2007 on my desktop (WinXP sp2)
and I noticed a pop-up relating to something about "Framework."
I don't know what that could have meant. Turbo Tax appears to be working okay.

If I remember correctly, sometime ago (maybe 1 year...) there was, I
believe, a critical update about "Framework."
Therefore, if there were any updates to "Framework" (if that is
necessary/possible), I think they would have shown up in the Critical Updates
that I perform every month.

Can anyone 'shed any light' on Framework, etc.? Thank you.

For TurboTax to run properly on your computer, you may have been required to
install a specific version of Microsoft's .NET Framework. To confirm this, go to
Control Panel and double click Add or Remove Programs. Once the list is
populated, scroll down the list and see if you see an entry for Microsoft .NET
Framework.

Versions 1.1 and 2.0 have been available for some time while versions 3.0 and
3.5 are more recent releases. Having one of the newer versions does not mean you
can uninstall the earlier versions. Different programs may require different
versions.

You might want to visit the Windows Update site as you will probably find that
there are now Critical Updates available for you system for the version that was
installed with TurboTax.

Note: In Add or Remove Programs, make sure the "Show updates" box at the top of
the window is checked to view any updates that have been installed for any of
the versions of the .NET Framework you currently have on your system.

Good luck

Thank you.
I heard from TT and they said "turbotax uses net framework 2 this year as a
third party software, its required to run the tax program."
I looked in my Add/Remove and saw:
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 (no size shown)
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB283366) (no size shown) This is DL
I remember.
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Size 83.30MB
Since I states I have .NET Framework 2.0, I guess I am okay with Turbo Tax,
but I wonder why they would mention (with pop-up) that I needed .NET
Framework, etc.
Quite shocking/scary to us who know little about computers.
BTW - Just what is NET.Framework?

Just what is .NET Framework?

That's a question best answered by someone who's a lot more familiar with the
inner workings of a computer than I am. Most of what I've read on the subject
can only be described as confusing.

Since a number of software developers, such as the people who wrote your
TurboTax program, are now creating software that requires the .NET Framework,
average computer users are faced with a dilemma. If you want to use their
software, you have to install the .NET Framework component. As with all
software, you make a decision on how much trust you have in the source. If you
trust Microsoft and Intuit, you install the software. If not, you look
elsewhere. Personally, I don't have a problem with the .NET Framework or a
program that uses it being installed on my computers.

Keep in mind that there are a number of updates for the .NET Framework 2.0 that
should be installed on your computer. Visit the Windows Update site to see if
they're needed on your computer.

i remember downloading the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB283366) I
believe, but don't remember downloading the 2.0, which I think was installed
by Turbo Tax (which they say they would do if they didn't find it).

Just noticed in Critical Updates page, but under OPTIONAL Software:
I wonder now should I download this OPTIONAL Software (or would it interfere
with Turbo Tax)????

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (KB110806)
Download size: 23.6 MB , 5 minutes
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 provides cumulative roll-up
updates for customer reported issues found after the release of Microsoft
.NET Framework 2.0. In addition, this release provides security improvements,
and prerequisite feature support for .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1, and
.NET Framework 3.5. After you install this item, you may have to restart your
computer. Details...

Since that update is described as optional, it's up to you whether you want to
install it or not. Looking at the documentation provided by Microsoft for that
service pack, it looks like they packaged a number of fixes for specific
problems into one update. I don't think you'll find this service pack having any
impact on how TurboTax runs.

That said, you can always wait until after tax season to install the service
pack.

Problems that are fixed in the .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945757

It's late but I don't see any Security updates included in the long list
of Fixes on the above page. Check it out for yourself, AliceZ.
Suggest you visit Windows Update and do a Custom scan to see if it's
offered as a Critical or Important update. If it remains an Optional
update, suggest ignore it and you allow Automatic Updates to offer any
Critical or Important *Security* updates that may be forthcoming for
.NET Framework 2.0.
*IF* any of those issues listed arise, then install SP1.

Set Automatic Updates to " Download updates for me, but let me choose
when to install them " using the Automatic Updates applet in the Control
Panel.
That way you'll be able to tell when this particular Framework is
offered Sec updates.
BTW, .NET Framework 2 was installed when TurboTax was installed.
You didn't have to do a thing ... whether that's a good thing or not,
well ... <w>
