    - Can I build a stand-alone system? I want to set up a system that will never be on-line and would like some advice on how to do this. The advantages that I think apply are: 1. No malware will ever infect the system 2. I will not need a firewall, any internet-security software or anti-virus software, meaning that few resident security routines, loaded at start-up, will be required leading to greater system performance. 3. I will not need to continually install security updates to system and application software, again resulting in better performance as well as easier set-up 4. I will not be tempted to load on the latest level of software 'enhancements', most of which are really not useful additions to software which is already seriously over-bloated to start with (for example, I doubt whether there are many things in PS CS3 which were not in PS 6.5 and which are critical to my work). This will mean I spend far less time maintaining my system, learning new software and battling with system instabilities. 5. I don't need to move inexorably to newer hardware every 12 months, as I have been doing for the past 10 years. Ms Word and/or competitive equivalents ran with acceptable performance and acceptable function 15 years ago on my 120 Mhz, 32 Mb RAM Pentium system. But there are problems I can foresee: A. Windows XP will not work without an on-line activation (I suppose I could revert to Win 2K - that was equally stable, but some of my software is XP (and later) only). Some apps. are moving (or have moved) to a similar requirement. B. I fear some, as yet unspecified, problems with web-browsers (which are required accessing html help files for example). C. Some major apps. (like those in MS Office) require on-line connectivity to provide help support. D. There is the obvious problem of getting data into and out of this system. Yes, I could use R/W CD media (a throw back to the old pre-LAN days of 'sneaker-ware') - but it's not really attractive. IF I have any LAN connectivity, there is always the risk that malware will migrate across the LAN - isn't there? E. I can't do LAN printing or back up data to my in-house 'server'.     - Can Not Display Control Panel Properly I have recently re-installed Windows XP. Now, when I select Start - > Control Panel the panel is not displayed. Instead, The Control Panel folder appears.     - File Types not showing proper icon for html / htm Running Window XP MCE SP2 HTML and HTM are configured to show Firefox icon for all modes, edit / print / open I've even hit advanced and checked to make sure the icon is set right. Yet in windows explorer I still don't get the icon. I get a generic window looking icon. Not the fireball. I googled and found reference to shelliconcache errors, but can't find the file and the help is old like this is a win98 issue. Tried Tweak UI -> repair.     - Re: "Convert" NTFS to FAT32 after Saving HDD Contents Hi, I do have a very good reason for doing this, in order to access the HDD contents without launching WinXP, using a bootable CD rom (created using a bootable floppy disk on a Windows 98 computer). Why would I want to access the HDD without Windows "running"? For matters of security (out of "reach" of all types of spyware) in order to view (and/or edit) sensitive personal information that is scrambled/encrypted. The program I use will not run unless in real Dos mode. A NTFS HDD is not accessible after booting via bootable CD rom. However, you may know something that I don't know regarding access to the NTFS HDD without WinXP "running"?     - Send Fax Wizard no longer able to queue multiple recipients I used to be able to queue an arbitrary number of fax recipients with the Send Fax Wizard. Now it still lets me make a long list of recipients, but no more than one or two recipients actually appear in the fax queue. The net effect seems to be that I can submit a fax to one or two recipient destinations at a time, but the rest if there are more do not show up in the fax queue. I have removed and re-installed the XP fax service; I have deleted and re-created the fax printer and queue; I have re-installed the modem. Everything was working fine on this system with no changes and then this happened. My guess is that on this multi-core system there is some sort of synchronization failure with a long list of recipients. Even so, it used to work on this system.     - Registry data shared between partitions. Hi, I copied mu OS XP to a new primary partition. Now I have 2 primary partition with the same XP installation. I did all that through PartitionMagic 8.0. From the new partition I tried to uninstall Office2003 and... almost magically I unistalled it also in the old partition!!! It is as the registry shares data among partition (primary, only 1 per time is visible and active). How does it could be possible?     - System Time Issue I have one XP SP3 system that will not display the correct time. The clock setting is set to Mountain Time (-7:00) with the Automatically adjust DST box checked, but for some reason is always displaying one hour earlier (like the box is in Central Time.) The box is part of an AD domain and all systems are syncing with the DC but this is the only one that is off. When I run the command net time \\domaincontroller /set /y from a command line, the system shows -6:00 Central Time in the output line. I have no idea where this is coming from. Has anyone else seen this? I checked the BIOS system time and that seems fine. We are well past the original DST date and the system has been fully patch with even the optional patches. Any thoughts?     - Point DVD-RAM Drive Letter To Hard Drive? I have a proprietary backup system that backs up it's data to a dvd- ram drive formatted as ntfs and the system sees it as a large floppy/ superdisk-type drive. This system is wasting a lot of disks, and, to make a long story short, I want to force the backup software to write to a hard drive instead of the dvd-ram disk. I've heard this is possible by editing the registry. Can anyone point me to some information on this? I know I'm on my own and unsupported by MS by doing registry-editing.     - Korean Languange Issues ... Hello, I am having peculiar issues with configuring a Windows XP SP2 system to use the Korean language. The original install was in English and Korean input works well. However, certain programs do not show up in Korean; they show up as processed Unicode. But Office XP and Internet Explorer shows Korean text just fine. I have enabled support for East Asian and checked out all of the options listed in "Regional and Language Options" in the Control Panel to no avail. Any other places I should check?     - Down loaded and ran nuidfltr.inf I have XP and a MS 6000 wireless keyboard that I can't get the enhanced keys to work. If I look at the properties for the HID Non-User Input Data Filter I see: Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37) At this point I'll try anything. I found on MS and update that may help. To run it I right click on the .inf file and select: Open With/Windows Setup API. Is that right? If any thing happens it is very fast.     - Desire stop office critical patches from upgrading outlook Hi, I have office 2003 and Outlook version 6.0 I had said yes to update patches for office, and on install said ok to update Outlook. After install and due to problems long story (with hotmail) I do not want Outlook updated. I restored system and again have ver 6.0 and wish to stay there. I installed update again to try to get it to work (with hotmail problem - doesn't work)..and second time installing - it did not prompt/ask if desire update outlook, as now is in my system file somewhere due to choosing yes before, on the first install; a file is telling microsoft I want to update Outlook when installing the critical patches. I restored again, back to ver 6. I would like to download the critical patches for office 2003, but the system now has in a file somewhere that on installing critical updates, to not ask me if desire to update outlook (to new version), as system has set it to yes somewhere, due to the fact I said yes the first time. So, if I allow the patches, it no longer asks if desire to update outlook, it will just update to the new outlook which I do not want. Does anyone know the file, where it tells microsoft that I had chosen yes before, so I can change it to prompt me on installing critical patches for office 2003 that no, do not update outlook? And if do know which file, how do I edit the file and what value do I put in, so that on update of patches I will be prompted and asked if desire to upgrade outlook? If the file is located on the Internet, connect to the Internet.     - Startup problem after installing KB943729 on XP Pro I ran MS Upgrade search & installed upgrade KB943729. Afterwards when I tried to restart the PC it gave me the option to go to SETUP or run setup through the network. It would not allow me to pick either <F2/del> or F8. Even when I tried to run XP in SAFE mode, it would get to select the operating system screen and wouldnâ??t allow me to hit enter. After a few time of restarting the PC, I was able to get XP up and running. The first time I did a restore back a few days from install & that didnâ??t help. The second time I backed out the upgrade through the control panel as the upgrade document recommended. Do you think that I might be able to restart my PC, after this weekend, without a problem.     - Page Not Found on a closed private network In our facility, we have two networks. One is the general network that all of the office systems are on as is the connection to the internet. The other network is a 192.xx closed network that can not see the main network and visa-versa. One machine (IBM i5) is on both networks and is running a full webserver. We have three PCs that are on the private network that have home pages pointing to the i5's webserver. All three machines are configured to startup IE when they start and load their specific webpages from the i5. All three display "PAGE NOT FOUND" even though the i5 webservers are online. Pressing F5, the screens do load. To say the least, this is causing problems. The three PCs are physically located in the computer room and use AVOCENT media streamers attached to their video cards to display information through out the facility. Any idea how to force these machines to load the web pages at the start up? On the old COMPAQs that used to run these services, we never had an issue.     - Sound very low...but volume at max I have a Windows XP SP2 system, fully patched. One day I noticed that the sound is very low. I can hear music in Itunes and Windows media player, but it is muted. The Windows Narrator is too faint to hear. None of the volume settings are muted in Windows, and all of the volume sliders are at their highest settings. A motherboard replacement did not resolve the issue. Also, I have tried different speakers and none of them make a difference. I have tried the speakers on other systems and they work fine. Any ideas? It is clearly a software issue, but I can't locate the source of the problem. I always run in normal mode, I've notice some resident malware won't be
removed in safe mode because it's not active, if necessary (due to boot or
lockup issues) you can do an initial scan in safe mode, but there's usually
no other reason to do a safe mode scan.

Depends on the infestation you're trying to clean up, really. I usually do
normal mode first, then safe mode.

Note that your question really belongs in
microsoft.public.security.homeusers.....
