    - Windows performance monitor with multiple processors I configured Windows Performance Monitor (a.k.a. perfmon) to record data on the CPU utilization by software processes. The system has four processors. The "Process(_Total)\% Processor Time" performance counter includes all 4 processors. However, this appears to include the "time taken" by the "Idle" process. However, the "Processor(_Total)\% Idle Time" appears only to include one processor. Does this make any sense? Or is there some other data I should be collecting?     - Partial downloads I've been having problems downloading from commercial websites. When I click run, the download gets from anywhere between 0% and, say, 58%, or anything in between and then just stalls. I repeat, and the same thing happens. On rare occasions the download goes quickly and completely, sometimes after many, many attempts, and sometimes it just never downloads.     - Help Needed - Cannot Update, Administrator Privileges Broken This all started when I noticed I was short a few windows updates on XP SP2. I decided I should run WU manually, and ran into a roadblock. It tries to install Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool, which fails every time. OK, simple enough. I went on the here and tried all the fixes: manually reinstalling WGA, running the tool the MS guy recommends, nothing works. My office's IT guy happened to be in, so I asked him. He says just download SP3 standalone, should be a workaround. Downloaded, tried to install. "You do not have permission to update Windows XP. Please contact your system administrator." ...What? I'm on an account in the administrators group for my system. I log off and into my computer's Admin account. "You do not have permission to update Windows XP. Please contact your system administrator." At this point, I'm stumped, IT guy is confused. Googled around, got a series of DLLs to re-initialize. They are: REGSVR32 wuapi.dll REGSVR32 wuaueng.dll REGSVR32 atl.dll REGSVR32 wucltui.dll REGSVR32 wups.dll Regsvr32 msxml3.dll Regsvr32 msxml2.dll Regsvr32 msxml.dll wuaueng.dll fails on a 0x80070514. As far as I can tell, there is nothing anywhere about that dll and that error code. System restore gives a permission error. I have checked , User Rights Assignment -> Take ownership of files or other objects and my Administrators group is a member. I've also tried adding the local Administrator account and my user account on the domain to the list, both of which had no effect on the problem. We have a small office, and our IT guy tells me he hasn't put any such restrictions in effect on any of the office computers.     - Partial Downloads Quite often, when I try to download a program from a commercial website, the dowload "runs" to anywhere between 0% and, say, 58%, or anything in between, and then just stalls.     - Help with setting up a cd Dear All I appreciate this may not be the right newsgroup, but if anyone can either help or point me in the right direction, thank you. I have produced a CD with two items on it. The CD is set to autorun an html file. On the page that loads, there is a link to a website on the disk and another link to a program on the disk. but it wont work. I need to sort out the coding. The Website link works fine, but I cannot work out the code, to get the other link to work, it is an .exe file which will run a programme. I want this to work directly from the link.     - How to use word as a message format along with a signature default When I use Outlook (2000), I'm not able to use an automated signature option when I have word as my outgoing mail to edit messages. Signature picker will not allow me to access it once I check the â??use MS Word to edit e-mail messagesâ?? box.     - mutiple windows activations from same location. I recently purchased several (35) pc's at a government surplus wharehouse. The machines all have valid win XP pro stickers. Since they are ex government pc's the harddrives have been stripped out of them. I was using the "new" pc to replace older ones here at work, and everything was fine till a week ago. I had reinstalled and activated about 16 machines with no problems, but now I am forced to call microsoft every time I activate one. They are valid codes, but I think microsoft has become suspicious of so many activations from the same IP. If the code is valid why should they care?     - Help !! XP Home administrator priviledge problem Hi. I wanted to read a region 1 dvd and had 2 changes left on my dvd region changing option dialog. One to change, one to change back I thought. Unfortunately when I went to change back, possibly because it was the last one, it said I needed administrator priviledges. Checking the user accounts I already had that. Nevertheless I booted into safe mode and selected an administrator account that wasn't there on normal boot up. But it still gave me the same error and wouldn't let me change it.     - Firefox 3 and XP crashes this site Here is a problem that was posted over in Mozilla.Support.Firefox on June 24 entitled "FF3 Crashes on this Webpage." It has been thoroughly thrashed out there but with no solution. I bring it here seeking a solution because there seems to be a conflict between FF3 and Win XP. I am not the OP and I hope by bringing it here I have not offended this NG or Mozilla.Support.Firefox in any way. Briefly, the problem is that this site http://www.ramonadisposal.com causes a crash in Firefox and produces an error message saying,"Firefox has encountered a problem an needs to close...." The error signature is: AppName: firefox.exe Appversion 1.9.0.3071 ModName ntdll.dll ModVer 5.1.2600.5512 and seems to occur when Flash Player tries to show the large image in the upper right corner of the site. The small image on the left displays correctly. Now for the specifics. I have Firefox 3 installed on my Laptop and my desktop. Both are running XP Home SP3 and Adobe Flash Player 9.0.124.0. The laptop renders the site just fine but the desktop produces the error above. I installed Firefox on both machines from my administrative account (MAIN). If I go to this site while running as MAIN the error occurs. HOWEVER, if I switch to the guest account or any other account including the Administrator, the site renders with no problems. That seems very strange to me. What I have done: I have compared the Firefox prefs.js and user.js files on both machines and they are identical. I have used the FF Profile manager to run FF on the desktop with the laptop's profile but the problem still exits. I have deleted FF on the Desktop and installed it again. No luck Running FF in the safe mode (firefox.exe -safemode) doesn't solve the problem. Likewise, booting XP into safe mode doesn't either.     - rebuild search index How do I rebuild the search index in Windows XP? I downloaded Windows Desktop Search, but searches are incomplete. I read that rebuilding the search index would eliminate this issue.     - cmd.exe and unicode characters I opened a command window with cmd.exe /u but when I used dir to display the directory contents of a folder which has filenames with Russian characters each of these characters displayed as a question mark.     - Graphics card/monitor issues Hello everyone, My family owns a business, and my mom is having trouble with one of th computers she uses to keep information on file. I backed up the file she wanted to keep, and decided it was time to reformat the PC. I reformatted the computer, and now I'm having a big problem with th graphics card and/or monitor. The monitor kept flashing black each tim I would try to do anything (click on a web link, close a window, etc.) and I decided to try to update the graphics card drivers.     - boot screen pet peeve When I boot my PC (XP SP2, ATI Radeon 9500 256mb AGP) and Windows begins to load, when it gets to the black screen scrolling loading bar, copyright and Microsoft name, the screen is off to the right and it reads "Microsof" , it is not centered.     - IE cannot display webpage I am very frustrated. I've been trying to get onto one website which I've always been able to do and for the last week or so I keep getting this message. I have IE 7 and windows xp and everything is up to date. I run McAfee security suite. I have tried everything on the solutions page except for setting the computer back to the way it was when I bought it. I would rather not do that. I have tried deleting sp 3 and that hasn't helped.     - windows corrupted need to reinstall Ok here we go. This on a small insignia pc (my girlfriends) 6 years old running xp home SP2. This is what happened I was not there so not sure of exact vergage. Got notice from virus software that a virus had been stopped. Also got notice that windows system files had been corrupted. Since then pc not running good. Can not defrag except in safe mode, help and support center will not start. In both cases says files not found but they are there. There is a whole laundry list of issues. She lost all the discs that came with this machine so I have nothing to work with. It has excel and word and I would like to keep them if possible as I do not have the office disk to reinstall. I bought a new XP home edition SP2. Not sure how to go about this.     - XP, SP3 and IIS. I'm not sure if this is the correct forum, but I've noticed that the IIS Public forum users don't seem to get answers. Anyway, I have XP Pro (had SP2 on it), with IIS 6. My web site used to work fine, but since upgrading to SP3 last evening, users cannot even connect to me. They get all kinds of "Server not responding", "Timeouts" and several other messages. This makes sense since the resolution is occurring at my router's level (I would guess). Additional info: router is a 2700HG-E Gateway with firmware version 4.25.43 installed. According to my router's update configuration link, it is the latest version. I've tried to get hold of my ISP (Telus), but as it is Canada Day, there response is (as always) terribly slow.     - mouse freeze I am having a problem with my mouse locking up.I downloaded sp3 and that was a disaster. Couldn't get past the blue screen so I called a guy who got me back to windows. Prior to d/l sp3, I d/l .Net framework 2.0 because the manufactuer of the game I was playing said that could be the problem. That just caused a loop to start that I had to keep canceling until it stopped. I removed that and the loop stopped but my mouse still freezes. I tried putting in the driver resource cd to see if I could get a diagnogstic. That came back with Batch File F:/ MSDOS batch missing. (not sure of exact message). Any suggestions on how to remedy this problem? If I decide to try reinstalling windows (Windows XP Media Edition SP2) is there a web site to tell me step by step?     - Windows Completely Locks Up!! FREEZE Everyday my computer will completely lock up. Freeze. Nothing will respond. Ctrl Alt Delete dose not even work. I have to turn off the computer and re start it. I can't pin point the program if that is what is causing the freezing of the computer. I am using Windows XP Professional with SP2.     - Downgrade from Vista to XP Procedure We are the OEM and Build custom systems for re-sale. Can someone please confirm the downgrade procedure. Here is what I understand. 1. Customer will purchase Vista Business with License (OEM) 2. XP-Pro is to be installed with any Media and License (Already used COA) 3. XP willnot activate becasue its been activated before on different hardware. 4. Call Microsoft and they will get it activated over the phone.     - Relakks, VPN, and svchost.exe Hi, Whenever I use Windows XP SP2 with the VPN provider Relakks (https://www.relakks.com/), one instance of svchost.exe crashes (1) after a few minutes. The VPN connection was created using the Windows New Connection Wizard. I didn't install any VPN programs. If I double click on the VPN connection icon in the system tray after svchost.exe has crashed, the status window pops up then immediately disappears. Even if I restart the services manually (except for "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)"--I get an "access denied" error message when I try to restart it), I have only a very limited access to the Internet (web downloads started before the crash continue, but I can't browse the web, I'm offline according to OE, etc.) until the computer is rebooted. I used SecureIX for months and never had this problem. I tried with an old Ghost backup of the Windows partition but the problem remains.     - "Acquiring network address" icon displayed forever Hello (This issue has been widely reported for a while already, but I don't seem to be able to find any real solution.) There's what appears to be a user-interface-level glitch in Windows XP. When the computer goes out of standby mode, it reacquires its the network connections, both wireless and Ethernet. The connections get reacquired successfully, but the animated "Acquiring network address" icons remain in the tray bar forever. The only way to get rid of them is to open the "Network Connections" window and do a "Refresh", which makes the icons disappear.     - Creating Partitions on Wind XP Hi, My Wind XP is installed on my hard drive. The overview of the drive is as follows: there is an unallocated space roughly 4173MBytes and a NTFS partition (C) size 70GBytes containing Win XP. I want to create another NTFS partition of 35 GBytes. However, Partition Magic 6.0 does not allow this: it allows me to create another partition of maximum size 4173MBytes, but it does not allow me to resize the C partition, even though the C partition has 60GBytes of free space.     - File permissions problem By mistake, I deleted a user on the system - I logged on as Administrator in safe mode and I can see the deleted user's files and view them (they're jpg's mainly) - but when I'm logged on as another user, I can see the files in Explorer, but I can't view the pictures - Picture Manager has a red X in the middle of the viewing frame.
