I have XP SP2 and have done updates to Dec 2007. I just went to XP update
page, it checked for validation, (I passed), I clicked custom install
button, and then says "Checking for updates" (and a green bar goes around
and around) for 20 minutes and nothing ever comes up for updates. I have
tried Express button too, samething, "Checking for updates" and nothing pops
up for updates.

Windows server problem? Me? any help?
thanks

No, auto updated are not enabled. I want to update when I want to. Worked
fine with this setup for almost a year now. Last update was Dec. no
problems. Just today, no can update. Does auto update have to be checked if
you want to manually update? Still seek answer to my question PA.

No, Automatic Updates (AU) does not have to be enabled in order for Windows
Update website to work. That being said, please try the following to begin
diagnosing the issues:

1. Enable AU and select the third option (Notify Only):
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

Notify Only: AU will notify you that updates are available, but /you/ will
decide (1) which updates you want to download as well as (2) which updates
you want to install and (3) when. That's updating when you want to, right?

2. Now let AU run with this configuration for a day or so. If AU doesn't
offer any updates or you can't download them or you can't install ones that
have downloaded, see...

How to troubleshoot Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server
Update Services installation issues:

3. See the "Need more help? Tell us what problem you are having" section of
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=ph;en-us;6527

4. You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798

5a. Check Windowsupdate.log (%windir%\Windowsupdate.log) for errors
associated with the download/install.

5b. Compare errors to those listed here:

and/or go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and Support
link in left pane > Solve problems on your own.

6. If you're still stuck, begin a new thread in Windows Update newsgroup
