    - printer problem after sp3 I have 3 machines on a network, 2 XP and 1 Vista. XP sp3 was installed on the 2 machines both machines printed no problem before sp3, now only one will print to my Brother HL 2040 connected to the Vista machine (Vista machine still prints). Nothing else has been changed except the addition of sp3. I've checked the usual firewall settings and printer settings. All of my other shared files are still accessible. If I try to add a printer I receive the message "print spooler is not running". Any ideas? Tag: Update issue Tag: 1918283

    - error after startup I sporadically get this error â??The instruction at "0x7c91b1fa" referenced memory at "0x00000010". The memory could not be "written" either at startup or a minute or so after log into my profile. Anybody have a clue as to what is causing this and a remedy to fix it.     - UserENV 1504 & 1509 I have a 2003 domain with Windows XP SP2 clients. Our end users have roaming profiles. We have several users who recieve the error of "Cannot update your roaming profile" when they log off. They all have proper permissions and no netlogon or computer browser events are occurring simultaneously. I have tried to rename the profile on the server to allow the PC to upload a fresh copy, but they still get the error. It will show you the hops ( from your PC to the destination ) and may help diagnose why the bookstore won't load.     - SP3 uninstall question My Dell XP was on SP1. Had to reinstall Windows. Chose to do so to SP3. Used Dell reinstall CD and thereafter Microsoft/Windows Update. Works perfectly. Now, may have to consider uninstalling SP3 in order to install a Sony camcorder program which is SP2. Enquiring via retailer if program OK with SP3 (Sony website not mention SP3, at all: why not?). Meantime, I see in Add/Remove I can uninstall SP3 there. My question is - if I do so, and bearing in mind I reinstalled Windows to SP3, will the uninstall take me back to SP2? Might there be problems there? The reinstall was traumatic, and I don't want to reinstall Windows again if I can possibly avoid it. Advice/comments? Tag: Update issue Tag: 1918237

    - Carry the profile data from one PC to another I usually carry a user profile data from one PC to another by simply copy the specific user "tree" (while I'm logged in as administrator account in safe mode) and then restarting the PC. Now I try to do it again with some other PC(I must use this user because of many installations that I've done with it) but the user name is not identical. So I modified the name in the following procedure: May computer->Properties->manage->Local Users and Groups , into an identical name. To my surprise I saw that the profile name under "C:\Documents and Settings" didn't change as I expected. Can someone advise how should I proceed ?     - Volume fragmentation Two hard drives, 80GB and 160GB. 1st HDD contains operating system, program files, many files, and intensively used for 4 years, 2nd HDD(160G) is new, used just few months and contains jonly files. When analyze for volumes fragmentation, it is shown that I do not need to defragment C: volume: Free space: 45%, total fragmentation - 3%, File fragmentation - 6%. But when analyze 2nd volume(160GB), it show that I should defragment this volume: Total Fragmentation - 20%, File Fragmentation - 41%,though Free space - 97%.     - Moving files on your computer I have a real basic simplistic understanding of how files are saved/stored on your hard drive. I understand about how they are broken down and stored in clusters and how that information is written to the File Allocation Table so those files don't get over written by new files. I understand how a deleted file, even though it no longer shows up in any folder is still physically present on your harddrive until at some unknown point in time it gets over written. But I have been pondering something for a while and thought I'd ask the experts..... Lets say I have a file on my computer. Now I drag/drop that file from Folder A to Folder B. Is that files physical location on the harddrive simply updated in the FAT or do I end up with 2 copys of the file, one which shows up in the new location, and one which does not appear in either floder, but is none the less still physically present on my harddrive?     - Keyboard key reassignment? I have a very embarrassing question... Is it possible to reasign the keys one a keyboard? I spilled some water on it, and now some of the keys are mis-assigned. For example, here is me typing the numbers one through zero using the keys at the top of the keypad: 1,2,83,54,5,7,7,8,9,0 Yes, that was a single keypress in sequence. And no I have no idea why the number eight also showed up when I pressed three. My spacebar also got mis-assigned. Instead of space, it opens a search window now.     - Installing a New Hard Drive I want to upgrade my default hard drive. I would like to just copy, move, clone the harddrive then install the new larger harddrive.     - problem with xp and large drive i have a strange problem with xp and my additional drive i recently bought. i was running vista for a while and just couldn't deal with it anymore so decided to go back to xp. i have the original 250gb drive and added a 1tb drive. when i installed xp it saw the 1tb drive as D and worked fine. i started to install my drivers, first with the latest nvidia drivers for my video. it installed fine, but after the reboot i nearly freaked out when D was gone. it didn't see the drive at all. subsequent reboots did not show the drive in device manager at all. i started over again with fresh xp install and after it finished D was there again. i installed sp3 and after the reboot, D was again gone. i installed xp a third time and D was there. this time i did nothing except a reboot and again D was gone. one thing that's interesting, every time the system would boot after the initial install finished and D wouldn't appear, the boot process took excessively long (nearly 5 min). i can't make sense of it. if it was a matter of xp never seeing the drive, i can see the possibility of a driver isse, 48 bit lba support etc. but when the drive can't be seen after the second boot following initial install, that doesn't make too much sense to me (bios always sees the drive). i ended up going back to vista (for now) and no issues accessing the 1tb drive. system is hp pavilion a1630n purchased end of 2006. any ideas why this could be happening?     - Standby Status (Sleep Mode) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I generally do not turn off my computer (XP SP3) at night - I put it into standby mode and it fires up very quickly in the morning to exactly where I left it the night before - with one exception. Frequently, I am unable to print after coming out of standby mode. The print job is in the printer queue and the printer is active and online when I check its status in control panel. If I reboot the computer, the jobs start printing automatically as soon as bootup completes.     - REGSVR32 Problem Hello all I have a problem on my Windows XP Professional system. Have been give a VB program to fix which has the GRAPH32.OCX object included. Thi object is not registered in my system. When I try to register (eithe from the Start Command line or opening a Command window a administrator) I get no response from the command. Registering othe objects works fine (either I get the command was loaded or faile message), but with this object zippo I have copied the object from various DLL repositories on the ne hoping that my version is corrupt- but still nothing Have looked at the process using ProcMon and it displays SUCCESS fo the result at all levels but the object is still not registered Am at the end of my wissen (knowledge) and could use some good help Anyone else out there with this experience and can lend a hand?     - Printer, network?? Sometimes. . . I can see the memory card from my HP printer and can access it through my desktop as a drive (Z:\). Other times it just disappears and even typing in the address, it can not be found. Sure would like to know how to keep this available.     - XP system restore - cannot restore, so now what? I very rarely use the system restore feature, but of course it's a godsend when I do. Last night, I inadvertantly cleaned up some desktop icons I didn't wish to, so I figured I'd just do a restore to that morning's restore point to put my desktop back the way it was. So the standard stuff happened, then upon restart, I got the message saying "Cannot restore. No changes have been made to your system" The only "cure" I'm aware of for this is to disable system restore, then re-enable it. Which is fine, but what if I really really really needed a restoration? Again, in this case, it's not a life or death thing; I was restoring for a cosmetic fix. Questions: 1. What causes system restores to not work? In my case, I can be very sure it's not viruses or malware. I'm a safe computing person, and the system is regularly cleanly scanned for such threats. The only time I've ever seen this happen before was when I had a bad physical sector on the disk of an older computer. 2. Is there a way to use the system restore data I have to somehow "restore" my system, independent of the system restore utility? 3. Other than doing an occasional pointless "set a restore point, then immediately restore to that point," is there any way to ensure that my system restore capabilities are intact? Why doesn't XP warn that something is wrong with this capability? 4. Any trick other than the disable system restore, then re-enable it, that I can try to reinstitute system restore functionality?     - Are the Net framework 1.1 install files stuffed or something I managed to slipstream Net framework 1.1 and 2 (with updates). Only thing is, in add/remove programs it said 1.1 maybe corrupt. I thought installing Net framework 2 corrupted the 1.1 install. So, to test this, I removed the NF 2 files, and installed the 1.1 files. Same thing happened. Is there a trick to installing Net framework 1.1 or something?? Since it doesnt matter if I install it by itself or slipstream it with Net framework 2, or install it after I install XP (not slipstreamed) the install is still corrupt Or is it one of the 1.1 updates that screw the NF 1.1 install up??     - Under what architecture is Windows XP compiled? I know it supports x86 processors, but what I don't know if XP is "compiled" under i386 (there are in fact several folders named 386 in the WINDOWS directory) making it upward compatible with later processors: i486, i586 and i686?... or, is it locally "compiled" when installed in any PC in the latest architecture available? In other words: does XP take advantage of the latest i686 instruction set when installed on a P2 o newer processor?     - reinstalling Xp home (CD lost) I have lost my CD, but still have the product key from the CD. I need to reinstall Xp. Can I just borrow someone else's CD to reinstall Xp and then enter the product key for the CD that I purchased several years ago (rather than the product code on the borrowed CD)?     - Windows seems slow recently, sound stutters etc. I don't know what has happened but it is running like a dog. It takes longer to boot up seemingly. It seems to other performance probs too, the mouse pointer is 'sticky' and it stutters playing music, or maybe video but it is very noticable on sound. Even when the cpu is 'idle' supposedly. There seems to be a mismatch between the cpu usage bar in the system tray and the cpu in task manager, but that my be due to delays betwen the two perhaps. I have been mesing about with it recently, I installed ubuntu to my second drive. I aslo took the page file off that drive, but I have put it back now - not difference, does it need a reboot to take effect? I also opened the multi channel sound manager, I have never used that before but was curious, I don't recall making any changes. I also installed the latest AVG free, I have the link scanner diabled now. I killed off most/all of the avg stuff and that seemed to make no difference. I had also been transfering data off another drive by putting it on as slave, I got the jumper setting wrong a few times resulting in error, and no boot, but when I got the setting right it was OK. One of the drives I tried was dead previously in another machine, I tried in this this one to see it it was justthe other machine it would not work in. (it seems a gonna). I also put in a network card (ethernet 10/100) which I thought was dead, it didn't seem to show up in device manager so I took it out. Another thing I did was to change my conection from the computer to cable modem from USB to ethernet port. Some of this involved using the network set up wizard. This always seems to finish with an error (unspecified) Any ideas chaps? Could be a lot of red herrings there, I will try and undo a lot of the 'stuff' I have done. It's not too bad really but music sounds bad with stuttering, so noticable. Any ideas diognostics? Windows XP SP2 on sempron 3000 1.2 gig ram, 80 and 250 gig drives 25 and 85 gig free respectively.     - Follow Up to Error Scheduling Tasks My wife and I are the only persons using this computer. I am the Adminsitrator. I never entered a password in the User when I originally setup the computer. It boots up entirely without asking for a User Name or Password. I have put in other Scheduled Tasks in the past with a particular password and it always worked. I understand after a period of time, Windows no longer recognizes a password. Is there any other way you could suggest to find the password I used in Scheduled Task and change the existing password if there is one?     - Invisable Files On DVD Drive I use XP Home Edition and have a dvd drive/burner installed. Recently I tried to intall new software but when I insert the disc there appears to be no setup.exe file to run. when I open with My Computer half the file are invisable or not there. When I put the disc in another computer the setup.exe and other files are on the disc. The files I can see have no extension and are just labled system or file. The icons are just plain and the folder hyperlink does not work on them. Any folders will open but no exe files are visable. I can rip and burn CD's and DVD's and picture files work ok.     - XP and SATA drive assignments Hi, How does XP assign SATA drives? I'm having unepxected results when trying to image a SATA HDD. I configure XP on a SATA HDD connected to SATA0. I then attach another HDD to SATA1 (or another SATA channel). I would expect the orignal drive to be assigned disk0 in XP disk manager but no, it decideds that the secondary drive will be drive0 and the drive in SATA0 will actually be drive1. Why is this? It makes it very difficult to predict which drive will be which, when trying to clone drives. It makes no sense to me, which is why I'masking this question. At least with IDE, you knew which drive would be set as the first drive. Isn't SATA supposed to make life easier (without the need to use jumpers and worry about IDE channels)?     - Multiple issues - runtime errors I'm using Windows XP servie pack 2, and have run anti-virus programs I'm having multiple issues with my computer.     - How to beat activation OK first of I do own a legal version of XP Pro SP2 (Retail). The reason I'm trying to get round activation is in the past I have activated allot online, when I didn't know you could only do it a set number of times before you have to keep going through the hassle of ringing tech support and giving them my code number then they read me one back etc etc. Now I have read that if you back up 2 files called "wpa.bak" and "wpa.dbl" then once xp is reinstalled go into windows as normal and when asked for activation just reboot in safe mode and copy these 2 files back into the windows/system32 folder overwriting what might be there, as described here http://tinyurl.com/5zmqqy I have also read that if you format the hard drive (which I want to do) then this will not work, but (please bear with me) when I partitioned and formatted my drive I took an image of just that, so the image has nothing on it just the 2 bare partitions then I went about installing my copy of xp about 7 months ago, now I have gone back on that old image (of just bare partitions) and installed a fresh copy of XP and tried the trick as mentioned above with the 2 files but it failed to work, it said something like "I need to activate before logging in" so it didn't work for me. The only thing I can think of that is causing the problem is when setting up windows it asks/gives the computer a name I "think" the fresh install was a different name so I'm guessing this could be the problem but welcome any feedback from anyone. I have to stress I'm not trying to screw the activation process up or do anything illegal I just want to save the hassle as mentioned above, I have posted to a few groups that I think may be relevant so sorry if you see this elsewhere. The system has four processors. The "Process(_Total)\% Processor Time" performance counter includes all 4 processors. However, this appears to include the "time taken" by the "Idle" process. However, the "Processor(_Total)\% Idle Time" appears only to include one processor. Does this make any sense? Or is there some other data I should be collecting?     - Help Needed - Cannot Update, Administrator Privileges Broken This all started when I noticed I was short a few windows updates on XP SP2. I decided I should run WU manually, and ran into a roadblock. It tries to install Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool, which fails every time. OK, simple enough. I went on the here and tried all the fixes: manually reinstalling WGA, running the tool the MS guy recommends, nothing works. My office's IT guy happened to be in, so I asked him. He says just download SP3 standalone, should be a workaround. Downloaded, tried to install. "You do not have permission to update Windows XP. Please contact your system administrator." ...What? I'm on an account in the administrators group for my system. I log off and into my computer's Admin account. "You do not have permission to update Windows XP. Please contact your system administrator." At this point, I'm stumped, IT guy is confused. Googled around, got a series of DLLs to re-initialize. They are: REGSVR32 wuapi.dll REGSVR32 wuaueng.dll REGSVR32 atl.dll REGSVR32 wucltui.dll REGSVR32 wups.dll Regsvr32 msxml3.dll Regsvr32 msxml2.dll Regsvr32 msxml.dll wuaueng.dll fails on a 0x80070514. As far as I can tell, there is nothing anywhere about that dll and that error code. System restore gives a permission error. I have checked , User Rights Assignment -> Take ownership of files or other objects and my Administrators group is a member. I've also tried adding the local Administrator account and my user account on the domain to the list, both of which had no effect on the problem. We have a small office, and our IT guy tells me he hasn't put any such restrictions in effect on any of the office computers. Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
